Just something about Cruise that grates on me

McQueen - King of cars, bikes, rebellion and all that was cool.

Cruise - Pretender to the throne.

And also, he's had some of the most amazing supporting roles that I can remember. He can really play off his iconic image. Magnolia and Tropic Thunder come to mind. LOVED him in Magnolia. Probably the only thing I loved about that film.

This is just posturing, IMO. You can dislike the man but appreciate the actor. I always leave my own baggage at the door when I see a movie.

I'm assuming, then, you've seen this outstanding indie:

Interesting. I would never lump Tom Cruise and Nicholas Cage together. Nicholas Cage is an awful actor.

But looking at Cruise's resume, it's not horrible. He's had some movies that weren't great, but nothing that was a flop like Cage has:

Mission Impossible 4
Knight and Day
Valkyrie
Tropic Thunder
Lions for Lambs
MI: III
War of the Worlds
Collateral
The Last Samurai
Minority Report
Vanilla Sky

I mean, other than a few movies that weren't top notch, like Knight and Day, MI: III and War of the Worlds, none of those are as bad as the Ghost Rider movies or Season of the Witch. In fact, his resume is quite good. If anything, I put Cruise up with Brad Pitt as far as acting goes. I give Cruise kudos for trying something new--not sure he's ever been in a western (Far and Away might be the closest thing to one).

The bolded were godawful. The blue ones (italics didn't work) looked godawful. The rest range from good to excellent.

He's a gifted actor, no doubt about it. I don't want *anyone* remaking this movie. I don't want Tom Cruise in a western.

Just not a big fan of Cruise. I don't think he makes a good MI operator and I don't think he can pull off a gun fighter in the wild west.

If I had to pick his best(the one I like him in the most) movie it would be 'The Last Samurai'.

I think he's perfect for the MI series. Plus add the fact that he nearly does all his own stunts and I think his roles are damn impressive.

The Last Samurai and Minority Report are both great films.

man... i think Minority Report is one of the most over-rated movies of all time and i couldn't sit through more than 30 minutes of Cruise in Dances With Samurais.

haven't been a huge fan of his movies lately, but I actually did think moments of Knight And Day worked and anyone who says Cruise wasn't a full-fledged action-ass-kicking-star in MI4 is insane. His performance in that sucker fit the very definition of an action hero.

Well, first, allow me to suggest movies like War of the Worlds probably weren't Cruise's fault, given his track record. Also, it's kind of silly critiquing someone's you haven't actually seen.

man... i think Minority Report is one of the most over-rated movies of all time and i couldn't sit through more than 30 minutes of Cruise in Dances With Samurais.

I don't think Minority Report suffered because of Cruise, and I think you probably ate some bad cheese before seeing Last Samurai, because that movie was freakin' awesome to look at it on the big screen. I don't say that about many movies (get tired of the same kind of over-stimulating eye candy from the big blockbusters). Cruise's performance in an otherwise formulaic script was pretty strong.

I thought the first half of W.O.T.W. was pretty damn good. It definately limped home after that point.

I've often wondered if that movie would have been better if it had 75 percent of its FX budget stripped and forced to shoot scenes without showing so many of the alien machines. After the scene in the city, all you saw of the aliens would be what was implied by the actors looking off screen and the terrific sound editing. I think it would have been much more memorable.

I think his movies are good despite him, not because of him... He picks good subject matter and usually has a good to great supporting cast. Maybe he should move to directing only (i'm guessing he has already directed a film or two, not sure)...

Actually, it isn't hard to critique work when you can compare it to extremely similar movies that you have seen. And, since I haven't heard anything different about those movies from people I trust, I figure I don't need to see them.

Open Range? The Proposition? Rango? Appalloosa? The list is pretty bare, but there have been a bunch of original westerns since Unforgiven in 1992.

EVERY movie is similar to some other movie if you look hard enough.

I could get on on board with this if they changed the movie timeline to say a fantasy setting or a sci-fi setting. But remaking the western version just doesn't need to be done IMO. I own 'Magnificant Seven' and watch it regularly. It is that good! 'Seven Samurai' was also awesome in its own right!!!

i don't know anyone (critics or friends alike) that thought MI4 sucked. That was pretty universally loved as a great old fashioned action movie.
