This is refreshing:

Cardinals | Shipp Ready To Compete - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
8:07 PT: Darren Urban reports for the East Valley Tribune Arizona Cardinals RB Marcel Shipp said he is ready to compete with RB Emmitt Smith, should the team sign Smith to a contract. “If they keep bringing in guys, I’ll just have to keep competing,” Shipp said. “They want the best on the field. I’ll have to prove myself again

Guys with that attitude are few and far between. I don't have the Tugboat as my Avatar for no reason. Even if deep inside he is upset at the thought of someone taking his starting job, he doesn't convey it through the media.

Marcel is a PRIME example of a team player.

Hes also the prime example of someone who does not in any way shape or form need a mentor. Especially one who at this point in his career is not the Player Marcell Shipp is.

It also makes me sick that Graves stated that the only reason that they want this guy is to sell tickets. Sorry but thats an idiotic reason!

Shipp is a class guy and has earned every right to start already!

Shane...

Graves did not say that he was bringing in Emmitt as a ploy to sell tickets.

In the interview Thursday, it actually shocked me at what he said. It was something like "Some people in the organization want to bring him in to sell tickets, but for me it is strictly a football decision."

That made me raise my eyebrows because wheather he meant it or not, he disagreed with management in public. It was actually quite refreshing to hear!

az643, I had the same reaction when Graves said that about Emmit Smith on radio. Refreshingly candid remark by Rod Graves.

Rod could have dodged the question or just regurgitated the company line. He did neither.

Actually Shane...I just saw a quote in the Dallas Morning News. Graves evidently did say that it is a ploy to sell tickets.

However, on the KDUS inteview on Thursday, he did say that he was making a decision on his football skills and not one based on selling tickets.

Hmmmm.

Who cares...just make the team better!!

Is the following a misquote then in the article that was posted on another thread?

"If you think this is a ploy to sell tickets, you're right," said Rod Graves, VP of football operations.

If Graves indeed said that, I have no respect for the man. You should put the best players on the team that gives you the best chance to win. Players shouldn't make the team because they are the most popular.

Maybe he has mixed feelings as many of us do. . . He knows that Emmitt will sell tickets, but respects the NFL's all-time leading rusher both as an athlete and as a man. So maybe he said both things.

I agree just make the team better that is the bottom line and quite frankly bringing in Emmitt Smith will not do that. The guy is no better than what we already have.

All it will do is create a controversey at a position where one is not needed because the guy thats there has shown he deserves it and has shown some skill!

Not to mention we have some pretty talented BUs already in Scobey and Anderson.

Im sorry but unless he was misquoted I see this as nothing more than a ploy to sell tickets regardless of what he said in his interview!

Yeah...I just read that too. However, I will take more credence in a radio interview that I heard rather than a print interview. In the print interview he could have said this:

"If you think this is a ploy to sell tickets, you're right," said Rod Graves, VP of football operations.

However, maybe he continued by saying that "Emmitt is still a great football player in my mind, so the decision is based on football first."

The reporter could have cut the statement in half for the betterment of the article in his mind. It happens all the time.

If you want to hear the Radio interview...go here:

See I think that Marcel had a pretty good year last year, but is far from a sure thing. Emmitt, though not what he used to be, is a sure thing. He would add credibility and a spark at runningback.

At first I was against bringing in Smith when I thought about it thoroughly, but then I thought about it again (the Cards have been on mind my too much lately :D), I realize that it would be a good football move. Smith at worse, would be a good backup running back that could spell Shipp. At best he would beat out Shipp. Not bad imo.

After losing Boston, this team is going to need some excitement, and Emmitt could add a little. Plus it would be nice to have him add to his Rushing Record, in red and white!

If the Cards did get Smith, it would for sure mean that TJ would be gone. That in itself might be worth it.

Something tells me He'd only work harder to bat out Emmitt. Seriously, This guy has come a long way and still has some more to give. He sounds very confident, without being cocky. He's not worried about competition, sounds like he'll just have o beat somebody else out. Another year, another challenge.

How is Emmitt a sure thing? Just because of his history? Because if you think Emmitt is any where near what he used to be even 2 years ago you are fooling yourself. If the guy was a sure thing he would still be in Dallas and this would be a moot point!

What spark would the guy provide??? Emmitt NEVER has been an exciting runner to watch. he is slow and does not use razzle or dazzle. Its not like when the guy comes on the field you get this tremendous feeling of enrgy? The only excitement it would generat is the fact that his name is Emmitt Smith and he chose to sign with cardinals. Thats a piss poor reason to sign the guy!
