That episode was horror gold

It was a turnoff for me and I think many of "The Walking Dead" fans at the time. Bashing heads of fellow cast members to a pulp did not do it for me. It could have been less violent. I know I never watched the program after that.

that episode was putrid... and because of how putrid it was, the show's ratings immediately starting falling ratings afterward and the show-runners explicitly saying they were gonna lay off the gruesome extremes that episode had because of declining viewership (which was evidenced by the fact that they never even show Morgan killing whatever his name was... the choking almost all came off-camera.

My theory with that is just that the show became so mainstream that people who do not get in to horror were shocked and appalled at it. I love horror and when the bat was dripping with blood and chunks afterward it really sealed the deal for me of being one of the most brutal moments of Cinema Gore I have seen. I gave that whole sequence a 10/10 but I understand people not liking it. My wife won't watch nature shows when animals attack, she wouldn't have made it 5 seconds into that. For me it was quite magnificent as a whole. I look forward to rerunning the last episode or two of season six into that episode in the future in one marathon session. I thought the episode prior and that one was a phenomenal sequence.

Really, the fact that it overwhelmed so many is a barometer of success when you are talking horror, fear and the sadistic intent they were going for.

Loved the season premiere . My friends still talk about it. Like it or love it was one of the most memorable episodes of TV. I agree with the above. Horror gold.

I am a pretty f'ed up damaged and scarred individual...and I love horror.... and that episode taught me that even I can still be disturbed..... my ol'lady barely made it past the title sequence...

but I am glad they toned it down a little bit...as a viewer I think when they get nasty it should have an impact....it loses something when you see it too often.

I was tricked that they killed 2 people in that sequence. I was expecting only one.

The thing is, I love good horror films, but I thought the premier went too far. I was starting to enjoy the series before this happened. Actually, I watch all the zombie movies and much more. Most of the gore scenes I see in horror movies are usually pretty funny or there for a purpose. This premier seemed to want to make a statement for shock value but instead, I thought it was a turnoff. I think the comments of fans after the opener made it clear. Most did not like it.

In any regard, Negan and I would have had it out right there.

It did make a statement, that this dude is more brutal than anything they have ever seen. He is larger than life right now, controls everything and will brutally murder anyone who defies it. It absolutely had purpose, not sure how it can be interpreted as not having a purpose. I've never really heard a horror fan complain about gore before.

That IMO is good shock value, not cheap shock value like showing a penis in a movie or something. If the shock has a true, real meaning, it isnt a bad thing.

I've been thinking about this a lot, but Danny Boyle has done the Walking Dead much better, and that was just in a 90 minute movie!

Actually Negan struck me as a wimp with his gang of disciples, definitely not a strong person. The leader of the other group should taken him out in the RV. I guess he was not a strong leader either. Negan was nothing without his pack of thugs.

Maybe the point I'm driving at, Negan would have been a poor leader in real life. Smashing heads is not the way to gain respect. Most true leaders ooze charisma and command respect. They let others do their bidding. I did not see it with him. It's not the gore. I watch this type stuff all the time. I guess my problem with the program, it was going forward with a leader I did not respect. What program kills off liked and developed characters in such a backwards and classless manner.

Shock value, no this was meant to offend and I was offended.

I am happy you like the program. Everyone has different tastes.

Tell Negan I'm coming for him.

Obviously you guys do not watch anime... lol :) (Which is fine, we've established that I am the nerdiest of all the nerds)

Maybe that's why I'm never shocked by any deaths. If the main character in an anime survives, he'll be the first :p.

Thanks for lifting us beyond serious when talking about zombies. :)

I don't watch anime much but that's why I'm counting on you to put it in perspective.

Ratings are LITERALLY the barometer of success in TV, no matter what the genre. And judging from the fact that ratings have continually Declined all the way down to season 3 levels says that episode was a pretty big failure.

You want to talk horror gold? True, horror gold that actually lasts? You're talking about Psycho... you're talking about Jaws. You're talking Blair Witch. Even now, you're talking Get Out.

And you know what those defining moments of horror gold have in common? NOT showing the horrific moments. Not having any gratitutous violence. It's the build up, the editing... the dread... the ability to make you think you've seen something awful by tricks of the editing trade.

All of those movies hit the zeitgeist and TOOK off. As opposed to Dead, who's ratings fell off a cliff. Gratituitous violence doesn't shake the core for the most part. It just pushes people away. It's also LAZY. To me (and apparently millions of others who stopped watching according to the ratings), it says the show doesn't have good ideas, so it's just going to outgore you in hopes of making a statement.

Isn't Cheese and Stout a pub fare pairing? :)

Hahaha... as to my last "beating a dead horse" post, it wasn't really all that much about the show but more a disagreeent about what consititues "horror gold", which I think makes for an interesting discussion.

But apparently Bert whittle feelings were hurt because I don't gargle with Negan's pee-pee!!! :D

You can't really compare a single movie to a shows ratings on its seventh season though.

Imo psycho, Jaws and Blair witch were entertaining but blair witch is the only one I was a fan of really

A) The fact that you just kinda blew off Jaws and Psycho is pretty ridiculous to me.

B) and Sure you can compare. Ratings were at their peak... got 17 MILLION views for the premiere and have plummeted 7 MILLION viewers since. You can't argue with a drop like that. I mean you can, but not sccessfully.

:shocker: Now I get why you don't have a problem with this show...arguably two of the best movies ever made don't do it for you? Wow.
