Ok I found another report on a more credible site (scifi). This is good GOOD news.

Duchovny Confirms X-Files 2

Former The X-Files star David Duchovny told reporters that creator Chris Carter and series writer Frank Spotnitz are working on a script for a second X-Files movie. "They have an idea, which they like, and they keep threatening to tell me," Duchovny said in a news conference to promote his next film, Connie and Carla. "They're going to tell me soon. They're just setting about writing it now, so we'll be doing it in the next year."

From the pieces he's heard of the idea, Duchovny said that The X-Files 2 would function like a stand-alone episode of the series, with a major guest star. "Apparently, what Chris and Frank have is a great X-File idea with [room for] another actor or actress who can really score in a really great thriller/sci-fi role," he said. "I hope that takes the [film] towards the fans, but also towards new fans."

Duchovny did not address the involvement of Agents Scully (Gillian Anderson) or Doggett (Robert Patrick) in the proposed sequel film. But he assured fans that Mulder would remain unchanged. "Mulder is Mulder," Duchovny said. "That's one of the things I learned fighting for the last three or four years on the show, trying to change the guy or give him a French accent one day. The nature of the character, and what I eventually learned to love about him, is he's set. The great thing about Mulder is we know what he's going to do: what he likes, what he loves and what he hates. We're just going to play with that, I'm sure."

Hey Kate,

Just started watching X-Files sequentially (again) a few days ago. Just watched "Fallen Angel", "Eve", and "Fire" tonight. Hopefully will hit at least "Beyond the Sea" tomorrow night sometime after "24".

Just thought you'd like to know! :) (I have 7 of the 8 boxsets on DVD)

Chap,

That's awesome! :) I've been wanting to watch them sequentially (again) for a while - I'll have to wait until the semester is over though. "Eve" is definitely an under-rated episode. And "Beyond the Sea" is one of my favorites from Season 1.

Season 9 is released May 11 (I think) - I try to pretend Season 8 and 9 don't exist, but of course I will buy the set because I'm just an X-Files homer like that. Are you planning on getting 8 and 9 ?

Absolutely, but I've never bought an X-Files season set new (even though they've been permanently reduced now), and I'm definitely not going to be #8 full price. So it's just a matter of waiting for it to be used.

Duchovny Expects Second 'X-Files' Movie
2 hours, 36 minutes ago
By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - David Duchovny (news) expects that Mulder and Scully will ride again one day. Duchovny said a second big-screen installment of "The X-Files" remains in the works. Though he doesn't know the plot, Duchovny said "X-Files" creator Chris Carter has signed off on the story premise.

"I'm dying to hear it," the 43-year-old actor told The Associated Press in an interview for his new movie "Connie and Carla," starring Nia Vardalos (news) and Toni Collette (news), which opens April 16. "So now it's just a matter of making sure everybody can get together at the same time and do it."

Duchovny starred as alien-hunting FBI (news - web sites) agent Mulder for seven full seasons of "The X-Files," worked part-time for an eighth season and returned for the series finale at the end of season nine.

He and co-star Gillian Anderson (news), who played Mulder's skeptical partner, Scully, also starred in the 1998 movie version of "The X-Files."

"I'm at the point where I finally miss it," Duchovny said. "I wanted the grind to end, but I never wanted the show just to end. And I'd always had this fantasy and hope that it would be a movie franchise. Hopefully, this second movie will give it a foundation as such."

The plot thickens . . . from the Internet Movie Database

David Duchovny indicated Wednesday that a second X-Files motion picture is moving closer to realization. The longtime star of the Fox TV series (1993-2002) told TV Guide's online site: "I think [the movie] definitely will happen. ... [X-Files writers] Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz have an idea they like. They keep threatening to tell me [about it], and I wish they would." Duchovny said that the two writers have just begun turning out the screenplay, "and we'll be doing it within the next year." The actor also disclosed that a "big-name" star will also be brought aboard for the movie, someone "who can really score in a great thriller/sci-fi role. ... So I hope that takes the [movie] toward the [TV show's] fans but also toward new fans at the same time."

This movie is SO happening.

I honestly don't think DD would just talk about it like he has, unless there were serious talks.

UGH there are rumors that it will be Robin Williams. DD just wrote and directed a movie with him in it, so he has the ties. Now, I think Robin is a great actor, but in no way could I see him in The X-Files. The guest stars need to not be huge names, but ones that can fit easily in their role - perfect examples were: Luke Wilson (Sherrif Hartwell), Brad Dorif (in the ep Beyond the Sea), and more of that I can't think of.

Of course it's a rumor, but the thought still makes me queesy.

I loved the episode that Stephen King wrote . . . there was just something really funny about Mulder spending his weekend going to porn theatres and throwing pencils in the ceiling while Scully did the dirty work for a change.

"Chinga" - wasn't my favorite episode, but I did love the interaction between M/S on the phone :)

Chris Carter Says X-Files 2 Talks in Progress

Source: Variety, Teletext
Monday, June 7, 2004

Variety talked to The X-Files creator Chris Carter who says that Special Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Special Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) might soon reunite on the big screen for a sequel to 1998's The X-Files: Fight the Future, which collected $189 million at the worldwide box office.

"Frank (Spotnitz) and I have worked out a story, and there's a negotiation with (Fox) going on," he said, adding he's also in development on two other potential features.

Carter and Spotnitz both worked on the first film's story. This latest bit comes after recent news from UK's Teletext which spoke to David Duchovny about the possibility of a second film.

"We're all on the same page," Duchovny said. "Gillian Anderson wants to do it, I want to do it, Chris Carter, who would write and produce the film, wants to do it and I believe Fox the studio wants to do it. When you have the four major players in the enterprise wanting to do it, it will happen," he added. "It's just a matter of when. I hope it happens within the next year."

The 43-year-old star quit the TV show before it was cancelled, but said he was keen to play Mulder again. "I think it would be fun at this point, a few years removed, to get back into it and do it."
