There Will Be Blood

Release Date: December 26, 2007 (NY, LA)
Studio: Paramount Vantage
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Screenwriter: Paul Thomas Anderson
Genre: Drama
MPAA Rating: R (for some violence)
Website: There Will Be Blood

Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Ciaran Hinds, Kevin J. O'Connor

Plot Summary: A sprawling epic of family, faith, power and oil, "There Will Be Blood" is set on the incendiary frontier of California's turn-of-the-century petroleum boom. The story chronicles the life and times of one Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis), who transforms himself from a down-and-out silver miner raising a son on his own into a self-made oil tycoon.

When Plainview gets a mysterious tip-off that there's a little town out West where an ocean of oil is oozing out of the ground, he heads with his son, H.W. (Dillon Freasier), to take their chances in dust-worn Little Boston. In this hardscrabble town, where the main excitement centers around the holy roller church of charismatic preacher Eli Sunday (Paul Dano), Plainview and H.W. make their lucky strike. But even as the well raises all of their fortunes, nothing will remain the same as conflicts escalate and every human value – love, hope, community, belief, ambition and even the bond between father and son – is imperiled by corruption, deception and the flow of oil.

Reading stuff on imdb, etc... this is not only supposed to be the best film of the year, but a legendary, all-time great.

Hopefully it lives up to the hype. If at the very least, you know Daniel Day Lewis will be phenomenal.

i wish i wasn't looking forward to this movie as much as I am because there's no way it can possibly meet my expectations. Been dying to see this for the better part of 1.5 years. Bar none, PTA is my favorite director of this era and one of the greatest directors of all time IMO (Boogie Nights and Punch Drunk Love are great movies and Magnolia is probably in my top 10). Putting him and Daniel Day Lewis' acting abililities together is a film lover's wet dream

Wow, right now this has a 9.2 rating at IMDB with 1,285 votes. If it had enough votes to qualify, it would top The Godfather for #1 on the top 250 list. (needs 1,300 votes to qualify)

I saw this movie last week. It was good but not great. The acting was phenomenal, of course. The directing was spot on. I didn't get into the music, although I felt what they were trying to accomplish. The script, at parts, I found lacking.

I agree, very good parts but some annoying 'music' more like sounds, I know what you mean about what they were trying to do but it was still annoying. It's good but IMO I wouldn't say masterpiece. Just my 2 cents

I thought this movie was terrible. The acting was good but the plot and story line were horrible.

Excellent movie. Maybe a bit too long, but still. Great acting all around. As for the music, it reminded me of 2001 Space Odyssey. In fact, I felt certain that was done intentionally. Remember how in 2001 there is no actual dialogue until some time into the film, they did the same thing here.

Oh, I know they did it intentionally; I just think it was a terrible choice.

The music is as important to the movie as the acting itself.....especially in the begining where the dialougue was minimal.

I personally thought this was the best movie ive ever seen. it trumped anything ive ever watched and plan on buying the directors cut when it comes out april 8th.

I agree with whoever posted about this not only being the best movie this year.....but possibly going down as one of the more epic films of our time.

I will say this though.....as good as the directing and scores were in this film, the acting is what made it a masterpiece.

Daniel Day-Lewis makes one hell of a villian......Bill the Butcher and now Daniel Plainview

Wildly disagree. The music was crucial at the beginning of the movie because of the lack of dialogue, yes. I didn't mind the lack of dialogue at all. Instead of some other kind of music, though, we were given an almost cartoonish, evil buildup, villain-type music. I couldn't take it seriously. The acting was superb and the directing seemed good, but the writing was all over the place. The music and the writing killed this movie for me.

Thats why I think you're going to have a lot of people on the fence with this film. If you watch some Kubrick films i think you'll see the same kinds of intentional voids and music. Thats why I want to get the directors cut. When I got the directors cut for Lord of the Rings it was amazing how much they cut out of the film that in my opinion was crucial to the movie's story.

Just watched it. Awesome movie. One of the best performances I've ever seen.

I was reading the trivia section at IMDB and this item really confused me:

IMDB said:
In an interview on the National Public Radio program "Fresh Air with Terry Gross," Paul Dano told Gross that he had originally been cast in the much smaller role of Paul Sunday, Eli's brother, and another actor had been cast as Eli. However, after Dano had already started filming his one scene as Paul Sunday, Paul Thomas Anderson decided to replace the actor playing Eli. Anderson then asked Dano to play Eli Sunday (a much bigger role) as well as Paul Sunday, and they decided to change the film to make the brothers identical twins. Anderson asked Dano to play Eli on a Thursday, and filming for the role began four days later, on the next Monday. Daniel Day-Lewis, by contrast, had a whole year to prepare to play Daniel Plainview.

I was under the assumption that Paul and Eli were the same person, but this makes it sound like that isn't so.

You know what.... This movie was weird.

Being the casual movie guy, I didn't expect crazy religious undertones, or a nutbag lead character.

But all in all, it was beautifully shot, and DDL is a beast.

In many spots the music was a little to 2001'ish. Like the poster said above. It took me out of the movie for a few moments because it was so over the top.

I don't think I will be watching this again. For some reason the most acclaimed movies all seem to fall short in my eyes.

I mean..... What was the point of this? Where is the big reveal? Why did I even care about the plot?

This movie was all over the place. The movie itself was VERY lackluster and really pointless IMO. However DDL acting was superb and made it worth viewing at least one time.

I just saw this movie again, and liked it better the 2nd time. The final scene has been parodied so much, it didn't have the impact on me that it did the first time.

But, man, there are a LOT of layers in this movie. I picked up on a lot of symbolism the 2nd time around and even interpreted some of the scenes and actions of the characters differently. It's "Citizen Kane-ish" in that way. Definitely should of won Best Picture, IMO, and I really like "No Country For Old Men".
