More Buying and Selling
Buying: Ken Whisenhunt as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. Like a new car, the value immediately depreciates after purchase, but could be a solid long-term investment.
Selling: Russ Grimm as Assistant Head Coach of the Arizona Cardinals. The sheen will be on him even if the Cards' OL struggles, as long as the Steelers' OL struggles, as well. Is the early frontrunner for 2008 HC openings.
Buying: 3-4 Defense assistant coaches. Look at the coaching rosters in Dallas, Miami, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, San Diego, and maybe even San Francisco. We'll be drawing from that pool very soon. If Tomlin secures his job with a positive 2007, look closely at Dick LeBeau.
Selling: Clancy Pendergast as DC. His defenses have underperformed despite infusions of talent. He couldn't stand up to his superiors (Denny Green) or his inferiors (Richard Solomon). He's a lame duck for a head coach that has no loyalty to him.
Buying: Shane Boyd as training camp All-Pro. For some reason, the local hacks are loving Boyd, and we'll hear a lot about him through the summer.
Selling: Shane Boyd as NFL-caliber quarterback. When the lights come on, Boyd shows his true colors. Think of him as an offensive Calvin Pace.
Buying: Calvin Pace's roster spot. He's in a contract year and could collect 4 to 6 sacks as a 3rd OLB as long as he's protected by good DE play.
Selling: Brandon Johnson's roster spot. Where would you line this guy up? He was only active for 3 games as a rookie. The Cards will likely sneak him onto the practice squad.
Buying: Alan Branch at defensive end. If he can maintain his discipline and conditioning, Branch has far more value at DE than he does at NT in this defensive scheme. Watson and Clancy should be able to hold down the fort occupying blockers. Let Branch split some double-teams and collect 3-4 sacks every season.
Selling: Gerald Hayes's ability to stay healthy. He really came on at the beginning of last season, but I wonder if his health isn't the reason he fell in the draft despite a productive career at Pitt. He'll be even less protected in the 3-4 scheme.
Buying: Monty Beisel's value to the Arizona Cardinals. Buster Davis likely will make his main contributions on special teams for his rookie season. Beisel's familiarity with 3-4 concept from his time in New England and his ability to drop into coverage will be huge advantages for him.
Selling: Undrafted free agents making the 53-man roster. I just don't see it coming together for a lot of these guys. They're camp fodder, for the most part. All those fullbacks are going to help our RBs learn how to run behind them, but we only need one.
