The Cards gave it their best shot. My only gripes are (1) They went into a knife fight with one arm tied down & armed with a ping pong paddle. So knowing that - why get involved in Operation Wheel Spin in the first place? (2) During the past 2 days - with helicopters peeking through every known orifice of Elway, Adams etc., the Cardinals left its fans hanging. They had to know what was going down early yesterday, but we heard nary a peep (not even a "nothing new; we're working on it" lie. Nada). I think it made the franchise come off as weak and a bit in over its head.

On a more positive note - Michael had to get his feet wet sooner or later when it came to mixing it up with the big boys. He and his staff (& we fans) have the golden opportunity to learn from the experience so that next time, it won't be our first rodeo.

I think the Cards just got fed up with the whole "circus act" it turned into at the end. Seemed at one point it was us or Denver, then with time running out for the Cards here comes Tennessee, then the Whiners (did I miss anyone else). To me it just seemed like PM really wasn't as interested in the Cards as the other teams, so we finally moved on, phone call or not. Keeping Kolb, that's a whole nother topic....

Based on recent past performance, the Manning MO wouldn't preclude any other surprise team from joining the circus at any time. (Heck! Maybe the Yanks will make him an offer to be their closer).

I simply don't agree with the premise that the Cards couldn't or shouldn't compete for PM. Yes we went into the process as a bit of an underdog but that was due to our O-line situation more than anything else.

I would be horrified if Michael has anything to learn from Bud Adams.

If this was 7 Card stud then we were not holding the best cards and still played a very good hand.
Cards showing were Whiz and Fitz, down cards were Hadnot, College, Batiste, and Sendlien with the last card showing being Roberts.

Let's assign Fitz and Whiz Ace (Hearts) and King(Spades) values and Roberts as a Ten of Diamonds. Unfortunately the highest Card face down is an 8 so no straight for us and the bluff of a Flush was not looking strong.

Add to that we didn't have enough Chips to buy the pot and we got what we ended up with, a less than good chance of ending up with PM.

Listen..It was just on...and this all just happened today...so we should have a day to reflect! But lets be serious....If Manning goes to San Fran....THE CARDINALS HAVE NO SHOT of winning our division. None. Our schedule is brutal...and the 49ers won't lose more than 4 games....I mean it is depressing...that we go from Super Bowl to almost forgotten in 3 years. I know we won 8 games...I know we went 7-2....But let's be honest. We won 4 games in Overtime against the likes of the Rams and Browns. And we had Peterson break an NFL record for returning Punts for TD's.....

If the 49ers get Manning....we are screwed for 3 years.

San Fran is not a good fit for Manning. Yes, he has a quick trigger, but he's never been known to have elite arm strength. Coming off the injury and depleted strength in his shoulder, he will have a tough time throwing in the Bay Area's wind. It won't bother me at all seeing him play for the 49'ers. I truly think it will be his downfall.

ESPN had Shefter and Mortensen on(around 12:45am when I heard that) Mortensen said we are out of the running now. But he said something that really made me think. He said the Cards went plan B and paid Kolb his money. He then said Manning was extremely intrigued by the Cardinals. he said he is really close with Ken Whisenhunt and the pieces we had here. He basically said the Cardinals ran out of time and Manning wanted to be thorough!

John Clayton came on at 1:15am and was asked what happened to Miami and Arizona....Why are they out....He said for the Cardinals it was time!!! He said Manning was very interested...but time hit and they paid Kolb. Manning wasn't really interested in Miami.

This really pisses me off now!!! The Cardinals drug their feet. I mean why not cut Kolb...Go all in for Manning...It isn't like Skelton is worse than Kolb!!! If they would have went all in for Manning, and flew out there to watch him...Bring Fitzgerald to the meetings and workouts...I feel Manning might have chosen us.

You could hear it in Mortensen's voice when he said...Manning was extremely intrigued with us...and he is very close to Whiz!!!

WTF...why wouldn't we go all out like Denver and Tennessee??

Which is exactlt what I said would happen...you can't blame the Cards, it was all about TIME & we didnt have enough of it. We still migh not have landed the prize fish anyway. It's over, finis, bring on FA and the draft & let's move on.

And it begins....

:sigh:

Yep.

I knew once we didn't sign him the chants of Graves sucks, fire Wiz, Cards are cheap, I hate Manning would take over. :bang:

Only 1 team was going to sign Manning & the rest of the teams along with it's fans would be highly disappointed. Oh well...the sun has rised in the East at my house :D

I know it's water under the bridge, but they should have cut Kolb and rolled with hope of PM coming here. If he didn't, then bring in a vet to compete with Skelton and use the savings on upgrading the OL and OLB position.

The St Louis Cardinals didn't cave in and give Pujols more than a 5 year offer for big money because they knew it would destroy their ability to compete. I think this Manning situation will end up being the same scenario. You have to bite the bullet and say no sometimes.

We should have known that going in and saved everybody all the wasted time and effort. It was a giant wheel-spin.

After all the misleading and inaccurate information, these pinheads put out you're going to hate on the organization because they say so? Seriously if we haven't learned anything from this situation we should have at least learned today's "entertainment" sports journalism is a sham. It's definitely not worth bagging on your team because of anything their reporting.

My theory is a rather simple one:

(1) Peyton all along had preferred the AFC. If he goes to Denver he plays ina division that he can easily win. If he goes to Tennessee, he knows that division inside out---sure he may be leery of the Texans, but knowing Peyton it wouldn't be a stretch to think that he believes he can out-duel Matt Schaub.

(2) He may have wanted to keep the Cardinals as a consideration, but the minute he started throwing the ball around with Jim Harbaugh, the 49ers trumped the Cardinals as the one NFC team he would consider playing for. That right now would be a no-brainer for any QB who wants to earn a ring now---the 49ers have all the makings on their roster---the Cardinals, right now, do not.

It still irks me that Harbaugh was able to watch Peyton throw---and the Cardinals never arranged it---that, and the timing of Fitz leaving for Australia when the greatest possible signing in the franchise's history was a possibility was unfortunate (not a deal breaker---but it would have been nice if Fitz, Whisenhunt and the FO would have tried to schedule a throwing session with Peyton---and even better if Fitz was there to help Peyton hold up his new Cardinal #18 jersey, if indeed he signed on with Arizona. It just feels like the Manning parade came through town and the minute he left, everyone either went on vacation or fell asleep. I could be wrong, but that's what it feels like, nonetheless.

Fitzgerald as you know goes on his world tour every off-season. And you just listed several reasons the likelihood of him signing was slim. How about his relationship with the rest of the quarterbacks, knowing probably more than anyone else after talking with him what the chances were. I certainly after the scrutiny he took with the Kolb situation wouldn't have blamed him if he stayed out of it altogether. He did his part what more could you ask.

Aren't these the same people that were reporting arizona wasnt one of the final teams? Easy to report that now. The Cardinals were advised to move on as if they were not going to get Peyton. So they did? I can't believe how many people glue to every word that is said. Of course he was intrigued. But not to the point in saying yeah. Cardinals is my team. Peyton is not here. They can concentrate on other needs now. This team is still an exciting team. You forget who our Defense coordinator is and what team he came from. I have all the confidence he has something for Peyton if he comes to the division.

The worst part, if he goes to the Niners, is that the officials are going to be hyperprotective. Dirty looks at Peyton will probably draw flags.

This crap thread cracks me up... Manning's #1 goal and sole focus is getting to the Super Bowl... Period!
Joining an AFC will provide greater chances as the true power teams are largely concentrated in the NFC. And if he were to join the NFC, the ONLY team that makes sense would be the 9ers as they came within a whisker of getting to the Super Bowl last season. They have their entire starting lineup on defense coming back. If they got that close with Smith at the helm, why wouldn't Manning believe he can take them one step further??

All of the other crap being spewed in this thread is just that - crap!

I understand the frustration that is coming from arizona and most of you seem to be level headed on this anyway. I think arizona made the right moves from an organizational standpoint and to me their actions showcase an organization that has a plan to be successful. Now only time will tell on kolb. Peyton manning was a once and a lifetime opportunity for their franchise(twice if you consider warner). they had to try for him. However, this became a frenzy and is turning more into a lottery for all of these teams. The cardinals invested a whole lot into kolb and basically at this point to stay alive in the manning race you are asking your organization to throw away a qb in kolb that you have invested a lot into, for a lottery ticket.

Kolb is our man. He had a tough first year with no preseason or preparation, and was thrown in behind a subpar line and got his bell rung. He grew up in a run and shoot type of offense and then here was asked to not leave the pocket, but instead just stand in there and get creamed each play. Give the guy some slack. He has a great arm and is smart. Let's build around him and really give him a chance to succeed. Let's be honest and realize that Kolb had never in his whole playing career played behind such an inept line, in a system he didn't even have time to learn, and with players he hadn't gotten to know.

He is our guy now. Let's get behind him 100% and start talking about his positive qualities and expectations. If we do that I feel we will see the QB we hoped for.

I really thought he would come here--that's how naive I am--but now that he hasn't we really have to move on. At least the team does. However it went down, none of us are going to know for sure. I will say however we got played, not necessarily by Manning, but by Jim Harbaugh. Was a very good move on his part to approach the Manning thing aggressively, under the radar, and draw some more time out of Manning, so that we're not in the race anymore. Even if he doesn't get PM, he assured himself that we don't. Was a nice move.

The rest of it is beyond our control so I'm not gonna stress it. We're back to evaluating Kolb and Skelton. I'm almost more excited to see Skelton's progress than Kolb's. Skelton has improved every year. Last year he improved so much that you could see it on the field. It'll be an interesting QB competition and I hope Kolb comes in with a chip on his shoulder. And we still need to sign some offensive lineman, either through FA or the draft. We gotta get this thing rolling for next year, it's coming fast and we have a tough schedule.

If this is truly the case, I hope Manning goes to the Titans and Alex Smith signs with another team. Karma is truly a bitch.

I think the O-line and our salary cap situation brought on by questionable contracts doomed us more than time with Peyton. TN, Denver and SF all have very stout O-lines and loads of cap room.

Time to move on and fix those weaknesses.

Oh it's totally the case. Harbaugh saw Manning throw (and some reports say he threw with Manning personally) and we didn't find out about it until today, after our deadline. If that's not under the radar I don't know what is. He outplayed us totally, even if they don't get Manning. We'd have done the same thing. It probably wasn't wise to enter so early and show interest so early, because it allowed Harbaugh to sneak in behind us, closer to our deadline.

Was it on the day they tweeted about a former Colts pro bowler throwing to Moss? If so, that's a lot of chutzpah.
