Thanks Dave...

What an amazing talent he was...it made me sick to lose him and just about the same feeling when Tim McDonald left.

OJ is probably my all time favorite Cardinal...close second Roy Green. OJ could probably be called our greatest draft pick of all time. He exploded on to the NFL scene as a rookie.

Nope.

From Giants.com:

Sunday was the 20th anniversary of the trade that brought Ottis Anderson to the Giants – still the team’s last in-season deal. Concerned about their depth at running back, the Giants acquired Anderson from the St. Louis Cardinals for second and seventh-round choices in the 1987 NFL Draft.

The Jets fans are pretty happy. Even if he does have a bad attitude, it'll still be an improvement over Barlow's bad attitude.

This wasn't a deal, it was robbery

It might go down as the greatest deal in NFL history.
Ok, that's hyperbole. But it sure feels that way.

Mike Tannenbaum ripped off the Bears in acquiring Thomas Jones, one of the toughest and most effective running backs in the NFL.

All the savvy Jets general manager had to give up was one of his two second-round picks, No. 37 overall, which Tannenbaum stole from the Redskins last year on draft day in the infamous Rocky McIntosh deal.

Oh yeah, Chicago threw in its own second-round pick, No. 63 overall.

Somebody call the authorities.

The only thing missing is a gun and a mask.

The Jets sorely lacked a go-to running back last year and Jones fits the bill. He is a powerful workhorse who can run both inside and outside and take over games. And Jones plays big in big games; torching the Giants and Jets in the Bears' back-to-back New York swing last year, busting through Seattle for two touchdowns in the playoffs, bowling over New Orleans for two touchdowns in the NFC title game and ripping apart the Colts in the Super Bowl.

Jones also is an adroit receiver out of the backfield, with soft hands, a knack for yards after the catch and a firm grasp of his role in pass protection.

Tannenbaum just vastly improved the weakest area of the Jets offense last year and took enormous pressure off of Chad Pennington.

Bears players will tell you that Jones was one of the true leaders in Chicago.

And you know the emphasis Jets coach Eric Mangini places on character, leadership and hard work.

Jones' agent told me last night that the running back had a simple request after the Super Bowl: "Get me to New York."
Tannenbaum made it happen. And now the two are hammering out an extension (Jones is scheduled to be a free agent in 2008).

On the other side, this is just a wretched deal for Chicago.

I know general manager Jerry Angelo drafted Cedric Benson to be the back of the future, but injuries, holdouts and ineffective play have derailed him. Sure Jones wanted to be traded, but you didn't have to deal him. And you most certainly don't trade him to simply move up in the second round. Sure this gives Angelo ammunition to trade up in the first round, but you just traded your workhorse back for a draft day chip. That's insane! Angelo should've used Jones to run towards another chase at the Super Bowl.

Which is exactly what Jones can do for the Jets.

Was anybody else a little surprised by this? I thought the team loved Thomas Jones and he had been doing pretty well there. Then again, they do have some young talent there.

Word in Chicago is that the players preferred Jones, but management had to give the job to Benson to justify paying him #4 pick money.

Bad trade for Chicago. Probably the worst Chicago trade since Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio in 1964.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Ernie_Broglio

Ernie Broglio was a capable starting pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, winning 21 games in 1960 and 18 games in 1963, but he is most remembered for being part of one of the most lopsided trades in baseball history. Midway through the 1964 season, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs along with two other players for Lou Brock and two others. Broglio went 7-19 in two and a half seasons with the Cubs, but Brock went on to hit just under .300 and steal 888 bases in a decade and a half with the Cardinals.

This trade had nothing to do with TJ's attitude. It had to do with the following:

A. Benson is the bonus baby and there comes a point when they almost are forced to start him. Given the fact Benson showed some flashes of very hard running only reinforced the fact Benson was about ready to start.

B. TJ is going into the final year of his deal so they got what they could get. He would have sat out the OTA's (like he did last year) and this year he likely would have sat out alot of training camp (unlike last year). Basically the Bears were being forced to deal if they wanted anything in return at all.

C. I think the fact Rosenhaus is TJ's agent has some effect on this as well. The Bears are basically going toe to toe with Rosenhaus on the TJ thing AND on the Briggs thing. My feeling is that the Bears decided they would rather battle Rosenhaus over Briggs than Briggs and TJ combined.

Unlike Ed, I think Angelo is a pretty bright GM. He seems to have a knack for getting good players via draft and that is why I am not all in an uproar over this trade even though I think it is lopsided. I think another deal or two may come about and then we will see where things stand.

I second the motion. This was a totally puzzling trade. Jones was said to be terrific in the clubhouse, a very hard worker and certainly the most valuable offense player on the team and maybe the most valuable on the team.

The genius' say getting a 37th versus a 60 something plus Jones is a push. I don't see it, but I am in my office working so what do I know.

He and Wilcots could barely contain their laughter about this deal just a while ago on the air. They were dumbfounded...started bashing Benson and just went off. It was glorious.

AZcb34, I'm with you on this. The Bears GM has put together a good team.

And now, supposedly, TJ told his agent "get me to New York." I thought he loved Chicago?

Skkorp, I think he did love Chicago and the fans loved him but up springs the business side of the game. Quite frankly, I suspect Jones saw the clear writinbg on the wall and asked to be traded hoping to then get a contract extension...one in which the Bears were simply not going to be giving to him at this time. Then, if the worst happens and he gets hurt, he will have gotten another big signing bonus and takes that bullet out of the revolver should he get injured next year.

EDIT: Oh, now I see he already signed an extension. Should have read just a couple mroe posts after yours.

I dont think this is highway robbery. The rest of the NFL knew where the Bears stood in regards to Thomas Jones, he was there to fill in until Benson was ready to go. Benson never earned the job and the Bears looked like idots because they drafted him 4th and he could beat out Thomas F'in Jones.

Jones was going to be a FA, every team knew the Bears werent going to re-sign him. Thomas Jones' value was near that of when he was in Arizona, because the Bears held no bargaining chip. They had to move him as soon as they could to get some value out of him. If the Bears trade Thomas Jones for a draft pick it is likely in the 4th or 5th round. They did the best they could by moving up in the 2nd round.
