Was there ever a time during Sarvers reign when we COULD sign a "big name? We definitely had budget restrictions through these years, so "attracting" free agents is nice, but don't automatically assume that free agents don't sign here because we're a crappy organization. There are so many other factors, and it's disheartening when the fan base assumes it's because the world hates the guy who signs the checks rather than the inability to actually write those checks.

Boys, there's a new age upon us. The McDonough age. And it started off well last year.

You make it sound like he should get all the credit for the teams success. He deserves some but he's made a fair number of mistakes already. Not getting Pau or Asik last year was a huge mistake. Couldn't get them because he had to draft an undersized, relaatively unathletic PG that's not a particularly good shooter. And a Euro that will probably never play (He was unimpressive during Eurobasket 2013). The Suns needed to make the playoffs last year if for no other reason than to be a bigger draw to FA's.

Let's see how McDonough handles this free agency period. If he can just retain the Suns players from last year, that will be sufficient so long as he doesn't just throw silly money at Bledsoe. Until he does that, he's a question mark.

Yes because Pau and Asik did wonders. The suns are not throwing the money at Bledsoe, it is other teams. I would much rather they move away from Frye and Tucker. Our draft picks in the mid first are bench players, maybe Warren will crack the rotation, but no pick that late will be a good starter for any team, this year.

I saw that too but noticed he had no idea who we'd get either.

Steve

FA class seems a little weak this offseason. Here's how I'm guessing this will go.

1 - Suns play it safe and don't blow a bunch of money on mid-tier FA's. Organization is called cheap by fans, or it's "proof" that top players don't want to come here.

2 - Suns overpay for mid-tier talent. Fans are angry and complain about overpaying. (The same fans that would have complained if the Suns played it safe instead.)

Pau didn't even finish out the season and Asik....I don't understand the love affair with Asik. He's a decent big man who is owed almost 15,000,000 this season. No thanks.

Yeah, we probably don't need a crystal ball to know that some posters will respond this way. Although it might not seem this way when it happens, I do believe the noise will be coming from an overly-active few. Most of us will be swayed by the logic of the move an try to see the positive if given half a chance.

I actually don't mind option 2 if it's done via trade and for the right reason. We can afford to add an overpriced player or two if it gains us assets going forward. Something like taking Nash back in return for pulling the protection on their pick next season or maybe a similar deal with Minnesota and someone like Pekovic.

And can bolt next year, giving up assets for him didn't make any sense.

FA class seems a little weak? You're going to have LeBron, Melo, Bosh, Pau, Wade, Lowry all available via FA and Love available via trade. That's pretty much the most superstars available at one time as I can remember since the 2010 bonanza year.

That's true if they are really available.

LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki, Eric Bledsoe, Marcin Gortat, Dwyane Wade ... what would a strong free-agent class look like?

Most of these guys are either past their prime or not wanting to come here.

I can't wait for summer league to start. I'm hoping Plumlee plays. I'm every bit as excited to see last year's draftees as I am this year's...maybe more.
Joe

I'm less enthused about Plumlee playing in the summer league, he quite clearly ran out of gas during the season last year. If his minutes are limited, I guess I'm ok with it, but I also want him to play effectively for a whole season.

Three of them mentioned have a plan.

Melo is in for a big market team it seems.

Pau has passed his prime.

Lowry isn't what we need right now.

I'm not sure what to think about plumlee. Did he run out of gas? Hard to say since Bledsoe went down with the injury. Is he really that bad without Bledsoe? If anything he needs more time to develop and play so he can become more consistent regardless of who he plays with.

Dirk isn't going anywhere. He's the Tim Duncan of Dallas.
Bledsoe is our rfa, we just have to match an offer.

Gortat...we all know what Gortat is.

I think he just needs to used to the minutes. He came from a system that walks to one that never stops running. He played very little his rookie year to starting. That and the guy plays full speed all the time. He needs to learn how to spread himself out over more playing time. I think he'll be fine.

As far as the three having a plan...then why hasn't Bosh opted out? Seems as if this was a plan set in stone, that would have happened already, no? And for all the reports of the Big 3s "plan", there's just as much chatter that LeBron wants to play with Melo and that will be almost impossible in Miami.

And As far as Melo only wanting to play in a major market, why is he interested in Houston? That's pretty much the same market as Phoenix.

Carmelo (or some other player) could certainly join the big three in Miami but they would have to take hefty pay cuts. It would be pretty hilarious if Carmelo took a pay cut to play in Miami after Phil Jackson met with him and asked he wants to win enough to take a pay cut. However, I think it would make much more sense to add Gortat or even Lowry.

I guess I should have, instead, said the FA's that the Suns might have a legitimate shot at signing looks a little weak. Gasol, Deng, Hayward, etc. I could see the Suns offering the max, or near max, to Hayward because he's someone that I could see agreeing to come here. (If Utah doesn't match.)

If McD can pull off some sort of voodoo magic miracle and get Lebron and Anthony he'll deserve a shrine outside US Airways Arena.

Also, Gasol is no longer a top-tier FA, neither is Wade, and definitely not Gortat. Dirk is going nowhere and Bledsoe is under the Suns control.

But that's a function of where the Suns are currently, not the FA class. This is an abnormally strong FA class. Add Durant or Griffin or Wall or whoever to it, the Suns wouldn't have a legitimate shot at signing any of them either.

The Suns and Utah dueling over Hayward is like a couple of stock brokers fighting over a vanilla latte.
