I thought our bigget weakness was the oline...

I agree we need to upgrade the CB position but we also need more pressure from the front 4...especially the DE's.

Our offensive line was horrendous at points, but improved significantly as the season went on. I could live with Leckey, Lutui and Wells starting, and would still like Davis. Ideally, I would plug Steinbach in at guard, resign Davis, and maybe draft a guy for center to give Leckey some competition. Our corners were among the worst in the league in yardage given up, and it's imperative that we upgrade.

Why does everyone ignore the fact that Milford Brown, once he moved to LG, was our best and most consistent OL last year? All this talk of replacing him is just lunacy.

cbus, what makes you think Seattle would let Hamlin go to a division rival if he's healthy again? I'd be very suspicious if Seattle doesn't attempt to re-sign him.

Seattle can attempt to re-sign him. I personally think that he wants to stay there. He's a leader for that defense. But if for some reason Ken Hamlin reaches the open market, I think that he'll be one of the best players available. For whatever reason, the Seahawks seemed to have an embarrassment of riches in the secondary, and they might decide that they're money's best spent on the OL or in the front-seven, where they really seemed to struggle.

The Seahawks spent a lot of money in free agency last season; who knows if they have enough to be players this one?

They may try to re-sign him but we'll just have to outbid them. I seriously doubt that they put the franchise tag on him. Then , if he doesn't get what he wants in Seattle he may want to go to a division rival with his old coach just to stick it to them. But, in the end, like everything else, it will come down to money. If we give him the most, he'll be here.

I also think it is too early to give up on JJ Arrington, he has shown more tuffness then is pitifull rookie year. He is pretty small & has not had a good line to run behind. I would give him another year and more attempts to see what he can do.

not that i'm making the decision...but i don't think JJ has it....he just does not square up and run with his head up...he certainly is not the answer as a FB as we all know....i would take a chance on bush from louisville before i stuck with him....there will be a gazillion other opinions between now and the draft...bush is kinda big too

OK now at least one poster has called every offensive lineman that was starting the last 4-5 games our best offensive lineman at the end of the season. I don't think you could make a better case for keeping this group together. Just for one season, to see if it would work.

I couldn't agree more. Then any free agents signed would be for depth and any rookies drafted would be for depth and the future.

Like I said, I would prefer to keep the majority of the line intact, because I saw this group gel nicely. As a five man unit, they were blocking both the run and the pass consistently. Still, I think that Steinbach would be a dominating force at guard, and let Lutui and Brown battle it out for the other spot. A Steinbach signing would be an immediate upgrade to both our line and the quality of the depth. I also really like the idea of Hamlin. I think that one of the two, Green or Rolle will emerge as a decent corner. I think we need to pick up an elite defensive player either at corner or linebacker. It's exciting to think that we will have an entirely new philosophy with Whisenhunt and his staff in regards to free agency, draft, game management. I can't wait until free agency starts.

Totally agree. I get very anxious when I see people talking about so many changes.

Here's the way I see it -

As confidence that your coaches or GM know what they're doing declines, the inclination to "play musical chairs" with your players increases.

We just hired a new coaching staff (especially on offense). No doubt Russ Grimm will take a long hard look and then decide how he wants our guys to line up. Based on his past creds as a line coach, that's good enough for me (at least for now).

As to what moves Grimm might or might not make, I think we'd be best advised to keep our powder dry and see how things develop).

This post is more in line with your usual thoughtful analysis of what is what. When you said "I'm scared" that was not too encouraging but was more than likely an expression of how you feel. We brought in some outstanding football people based on their past perfrormance. If they had any input on the personnel of the teams they came from there is little reason to believe they suddenly went dumb when they got out to the heat.

In the past it was commonly known that some of our coaching hires were very very questionable. One that come to mind because I saw enough of him was the OL coach they picked up from the Bears---Wiley. He was known around these parts as a guy whose teaching ability and technique of blocking schemes was very suspect. I don't have to comment on some of the cronies that were hired under the Green era. The "stats" on Luke P did not shake out all that well, but he has shown longevity at the position with the Giants...know any more scoop on him Jeff?

I completely agree. Brown was #1 and IMO Lecky was #2...

If there is a guy to replace it would start with Wells but he is OK.
