OT: For those of you who like Civil War stuff, make sure to read Killer Angels. A book about Gettysburg. Fantastic.
The movie "Gettysburg" is based on this book. Both very good.

I would have Gettysburg in my top 3 with "Patton" and "The Great Escape."

If "Band of Brothers" was a movie, it would be my number 1.

My favorites:
1)Saving Private Ryan
Opening 30 minutes blew me away, then what followed was an amazing story capped by a gut wrenching finale. Fantastic movie all around.

2)Apocalypse Now
Surreal and epic. "Never get outta the boat, absolutely ******* right."
I prefer the full length version released in 2001.

3)Black Hawk Down
Ridley Scott nailed this.

This is my list too.

And the first half of Full Metal Jacket is as good as it gets.

Mathew, you must be serious history buff. Why? Because I asked my buddy, who is fascinated with history of war and reads voraciously, to give me his list of three.

After a day of narrowing down his list, he came up with a top two and couldn't choose a third:

1. If "Band of Brothers" was a movie, it would be his number 1.
2. Gettysburg.

I've never seen "Gettysburg" or "Band of Brothers". Sounds like that is something i should rectify over the summer.

Good call on Stalag 17. "Young Lions" is another good WWII movie. Montgomery Clift and Marlon Brando. Great show. I think Dean Martin is even in it.

My top 2 are Saving Private Ryan and Glory. My 3rd one would probably change depending on the day you asked me.

Anyone ever heard of a decent American Revolutionary War movie?

Only one I can think of is The Patriot but that was kind of mediocre.

Seems like a perfect idea for a film. Even just a miniseries (not named John Adams).

I liked it, but there should be more than just the movie about the Revolutionary War. I guess it would just so hard to make because the war lasted roughly eight years.

Not a great movie, but definitely a precursor to The Patriot:

Personally my favorite war movies are:

Glory
They Were Expendable
The Longest Day
Saving Private Ryan
Patton
Bridge on the River Kwai

Maybe not called "war movies":
Lawrence of Arabia
Schindler's List

Mulli you are right! It's amazing how few really good revolutionary war movies there are. Especially considering it is the single most important historical event in this nations history.

That being said I loved The Patriot.

Darn Tootin! No George Washington movie, no Thomas Jefferson (cepting the in Paris dopiness), no Hamilton?

Not even an Andrew Jackson!

Yet, we have two movies about Truman Capote in two years? Come on now!!
