I hope thats legitimate. I'd take both of those over anything in those categories. I wish they'd replace the choices in category D (and to a less extent category B). Does anyone know if The Frighteners is any good? Firewall is awful and I don't really like U2.

Frighteners is a very fun movie.

Got mine at Wal Mart, before the 8am sale started...was lucky. Got it hooked up and added an optical audio cable...this thing is sweet. Bought 300 and Superman Returns to play through it...awesome...It also upconverts really well. Couldn't be happier with this $98 purchase.

Agreed... I got my optical cable lastnight and my room was bumping.

The one thing I'm sad about is that my receiver doesn't seem to do audio over HDMI, despite having 2 inputs and an output for it :(

I believe it means I won't get true hd-audio until I upgrade, yes?

Optical is the same thing...

I don't know why your receiver would accept an HDMI connection and not have the audio available.

Your TV probably does the conversion anyway, right? Basically making it 1080p anyway? Or at least, that's how I understand it.

I just read this on AVS...

Potters on HD DVD will be mine for sure.

Yes, that is true. Even standard TV gets upconverted to 1080p. 480i TV upconverted looks terrible, but it does it anyway.

Because a lot of early receivers did not have HDMI audio. Unless you spent a couple grand on receivers, it just wasn't possible. You can get one that does it now for about $400. It is my next major purchase.

yep, most receivers hdmi ports were pass-through only, so the receiver doesnt decode the audio signal.

the main thing with hdmi decoding receivers are the new audio codecs used by hd dvd and blu-ray. hdmi allows lossless audio in full 5.1 or 7.1 channels. optical will only send lossless audio over 2.1 channels and then your reciever has to matrix the other 3 or 5 channels. it still sounds better than regular 5.1 DD though.

New movies on a sheet that comes from Sears. AVS forum people just linked it...company at the bottom apparantly does design for Toshiba. They are looking into its authenticity. TMNT and Syriana are added...

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=931350

That's the thread discussing it. A poster said he called customer service and they confirmed. He has the phone number for cust. service listed if you want to call and confirm yourself. I plan on it as I'd rather have TMNT and Syriana than the other offereings.

I already sent in my forms. I already have TMNT, but Syriana would have been nice instead of Dark man or whatever I chose. Ah well.

90,000 players sold in 3 days.

http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6498141.html

The HD DVD format significantly pumped its installed base over the weekend, as dueling store clearances sold an estimated 90,000 Toshiba players, according to sources close to retailers.

That tally covers Friday to Sunday sales of Toshiba’s second-generation HD-A2 model, which Wal-Mart and Best Buy sold for about $99 on Nov. 2. That’s $200 less than Toshiba’s $299 list price and $100 off widespread retail pricing of $199.

The $99 players made up most of the 90,000 units sold, a source said.

Within three days, Toshiba corralled nearly as many sales as the best-selling stand-alone Blu-ray Disc player has sold since its launch. Sony’s dominant Blu-ray set-top, the $499 BDP-S300, has shipped about 100,000 since it bowed this summer.

However, the Blu-ray format still retains the largest overall installation base, due largely to the millions of PlayStation 3 hardware sold.

In fact, the 90,000 figure for HD-A2 sales could be even higher, as it doesn’t appear to include all retailer information. The figure does span consumer activity on HD-A2s at Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Circuit City, among others.

Best Buy also shaved $100 off Toshiba’s $299 third-generation player, the HD-A3, Friday through Sunday. At deadline, a Best Buy spokesman did not provide updated sales on the HD-A3.

Toshiba and the HD DVD Promotional Group also declined comment.

Awesome. Donald and I were speculating on the number sold between 11/1 and 12/31.

I will say 450k. Including 360HDDVD players.

I saw that. Doesn't even include the A3s that were also reduced price.

Too bad Wal Mart doesn't release software sales figures...we always hated that when working at the video game company because they accounted for 70% of sales, but in the reports your products always looked like they didn't sell well. We had some that sold about 95% through at walmart.

I bet they moved a TON of HD DVDs.

Funny you mention that. Apparently Britney Spears' "Blackout" was announced the #1 album, selling 290K copies last week. The Eagles new album, "Long Road Out of Eden", is a Wal-Mart exclusive and moved 711K (!), but Spears was #1 because Wal-Mart basically tells Soundscan to eat it.

It looks like Billboard has adjusted their chart.

Interesting about the Eagles. 2 discs as well.

Just got this email:
You are receiving this email because you recently ordered a Toshiba HD DVD Player (model: HD-A2) and your order was placed in a backorder status while we awaited additional inventory. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has discontinued this item and we are not anticipating receiving any more inventory.

Because we value your business, we will be fulfilling your order with the next generation Toshiba HD DVD Player (model: HD-A3) that is replacing the HD-A2 in Toshiba's lineup of HD DVD Players. There is no need for you to do anything to receive this upgraded model. We will simply fulfill your order substituting the HD-A3 model. Your packing slip will be updated to show you received the HD-A3 model and this will serve as your order receipt.

If you are not interested in receiving the Toshiba HD-A3 as a replacement for the discontinued HD-A2, you may return the unopened item by simply contacting our Customer Support Team at 800-373-3050 for more information about how to return the product for a complete refund.

Please accept our apology for any inconvenience.
Not bad for $99
