I'm honestly not sure if I would make that deal or not. It would essentially kill the salary cap maneuverability. I have my doubts about whether the team would be any better than they are right now without even considering that with the salary cap space they can still sign some free agents to help.

Shawn Marion, Barbosa, Jahidi White, next year's first-round draft pick

For

Tracy McGrady, Juwan Howard

I know, I don't think Orlando would do that either.

Hypothetically, would this board accept a trade of McGrady and Juwan Howard for Marion and Johnson? Howard would make McDyess superfluous, which will be a consideration for some.

Nope. That is an awful lot to give up for a player who

1.) Has recurring back problems
2.) Is in the last year of his deal

I would rather sit on our cap space (assuming we dont land Kobe) and try to pick him up in 2005.

There is something about McGrady that I don't like really.

I am not sure I would rather keep the team and the pick, trade White to Charlotte and sign 2 (or even 3) quality FAs (at over the MLE), resign Dice and sign Vujanic.

As much as I support bringing Kobe to Phoenix, I have to disagree that Kobe is that much better than Tracy McGrady. I think both are phenomenal talents--and in reality, there is very little seperating the two of them talent-wise.

:bhiich:

talentwise, i agree, clutchwise . . . no brainer - kobe. did anyone else see his two three pointers last night? the first to send it to OT, the second to win it? the man has ice in his veins.

Not sure if it is true but someone on the espn board reported that Mike Jurecki on KDUS reported that Shawn Marion is rumored to be shopped for McGrady along with our #1 pick.

That would be neat.

Just thinking this off the top of my head:

If the suns trade Marion (11 million) for McGrady (14.5 million)

Then we loose only 3.5 million in cap space.

Our committed for next year goes from 33.8 to 37.3. Assuming the cap raises to 47mil as expected, since we have no pick we would still have about 10 million in cap space.

It would be a lot harder to pawn off White or Eisley however, but we could still wind up about 15 million under the cap.

Would people be willing to risk a bigger contract on Camby if something like this went down?

Or, by some fluke, would Gambo and Ash be right about Kobe/Tracey wanting to play together???

I dont want either Kobe or TMac. They both have problems that I dont like.

Kobe - Selfish and arrogant. Not a complete team player in my book.

TMac - Bad back & he cant seem to figure out a zone defense.

If I knew one was gonna definitly come here and had to pick, I guess i would say Kobe.

Hopefully in that case McGrady would extend his contract at the Suns.

I think if there is a coach that could help TMac figure out the zone its D'Antoni (sp?). With his experience in europe, both play and coaching he knows enough about it. By the way did anyone hear Jurecki say it? I was wondering if he said it might be a nice deal or if he was saying there have been talks between the two teams.

From the espn board

Tune in to 1060 KDUS AM right now if you can. Orlando shopping Tracy now. Mike Jurecki said Shawn Marion is one of the players rumored to be leaving along with our 1st round draft pick. Orlando said Phoenix has the best to offer.

FORGET IT!!!

False Alarm- Jurecki is just speculating. He is reading the same article on McGrady we all read. He's just assuming stuff I guess.

Thats what you get when you listen to someone who covers the cardinals, Just like the team , nothing but empty hopes and dreams.

There will be no trades like the one described for one simple reason: the Suns do not clear cap space until July 1 - AFTER THE NBA DRAFT. They could not accept the extrad $3 million because they would not have the cap space yet.

This opens a secondary issue. Will the Suns draft for their own needs or take someone who can later be traded?

A couple things...

1. I believe those trade rules that George mentioned are easy to get around. They just wait until after July 1 to actually make the trade between Shawn Marion and Tracy McGrady. They would have to wait until then for him to opt out and re-sign anyhow unless they just did an extension.

2. Tracy McGrady had trouble with zone defenses because the rest of his team was terrible. It would be much, much different here in Phoenix with teammates like Amare Stoudemire and Joe Johnson.

3. I think Tracy McGrady is actually a better offensive player than Kobe Bryant. He's not as good defensively. Remember what the Kings did to Kobe Bryant the other night? Opposing teams were doing that to Tracy McGrady for much of the season. And McGrady did not have Shaquille O'Neal, Karl Malone, and Gary Payton to take over offensively.

Defensively Bryant is better, but I do think that McGrady could be just as good. He definitely has the tools, athleticism, and size. Remember that Kobe Bryant also benefits from happening Shaquille O'Neal as a security blanket in the paint.

One thing I do like better about McGrady is that he wants to have teammates that can help him. He does not want to carry the entire offensive burden every night. I think he would love to be able to dump the ball down to Amare Stoudemire a lot.

I don't really have a preference between the two of these players. I would be happy if either one of them was playing for the Phoenix Suns next season. There's no way Orlando is going to trade McGrady to Phoenix for Marion and draft pick alone. It's going to take more than that for sure.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. McGrady's stock is relatively low right now, and if he says he's going to leave, Orlando is over a barrel. Marion and a high draft pick (especially if the Suns luck out with a top-three pick) isn't a fair price, but it's not a complete ripoff. Who would give Orlando more? They've made it clear that they'll trade him rather than let him walk.

My guess is that things will work differently: now that Orlando has talked themselves into a corner, the team that recruits McGrady the best is the team that will wind up with him.

What team is going to trade anything for McGrady if he won't agree to sign an extension? :(

I can picture Jerry West making a serious push for McGrady(basically offering everything but Pau Gasol). They could offer something like Stromile Swift, James Posey and Bonzi Wells for McGrady and DeClercq. Not sure what they'd prefer between that Grizzlies offer and a Marion/lotto pick combo, but if T-Mac has any say in it, he'd probably pick Memphis. Lots of guys want to play on a team with Jerry West running it, plus Mike Miller is one of his best friends.

Memphis is the kind of team that can make a deal because of having so much depth. Their problem is a lack of star power other than Gasol.

I'm not anxious to get rid of Marion, but he is a former All Star and former member of the USA team with very impressive stats. As we all know, he is not a #1 guy on offense. He is not going to replace T-Mac, but he could be their best offer.

I'm not sure that Wells, Swift and Posey is a better offer than Marion and the pick especially that Swift plays at same position as Howard and Gooden.
I agree that McGrady probably would prefer Memphis over Phoenix.

I think that Wells and Swift would both be disastrous on a bad Orlando team. Hubie Brown can barely keep them motivated as it is.

Well, I am not too crazy about T- Mac because of his back problems, but I would trade Shawn and the pick for him any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

And of course, you don't have to re- sign T-Mac if you don't want to. :)
