I mostly agree, but I do think the acquisition of a clear number 3 option over Ayton makes it even less likely that we will get the type of effort from him that we want. Maybe he will buy in to being a mostly defensive/rebounding big, but I would feel more comfortable betting that he won't. I just don't see him getting the kind of touches he very likely wants.
Maybe. Don't know for sure. When has Ayton ever complained about not being "the guy"? Seems like he has been a player in search of an identity.
Or a player that really doesn't like basketball that much aside from the checks.
I am under no illusion that Vogel is a magic worker, but the potential of Ayton means it is worth a shot. These younger players are an odd bunch. They need to mature and at some point Ayton will mature.
I would be having this conversation with him.
"DA, look at our roster. We have three 25-point scorers. We do not need big points from you night in and out. We will need offensive production from you at specific times when we are struggling or late in games. What we do need is a defensive anchor, and shot blocker. We know you are capable of filling the Bill Russell role for us. You can be a league leading rebounder, interior passer, and shot blocker. If you commit yourself to this, we will win big and you have a shot at an all-star game. You can be for us what Draymond has been for Golden State only better.
Are you in for this, or do you want us to trade you? It's up to you."
