I have a hunch there will be quite a few first timers in Flagstaff over the next two weeks. If you've been to Camp before then disregard my advice, you know as much as I do. If it is your first time however, here are some of my observations.

1. It will be hot in the sun. My extended forcast predicts higher than average temps and little rain (I will miss the afternoon thunderstorm threat). 85 degrees is a lot nicer than the valley but be prepared with plenty to drink and find shade.

2. Don't expect much "football". There will not be much "hitting" and you don't want there to be. Much of the time the team will be split between Offense and Defense (one wears red, one wears white). A lot of time is spent stretching and talking.

3. Some drills are more entertaining than others. You can always tell if a receiver catches the ball or if a QB hits a target (of course you might not know which target he was supposed to hit). Watching kick coverage practice is like watching paint dry. Eleven men line up and talk for five minutes and then walk the length of the field, rinse and repeat.

4. Evaluating talent is challenging. Unless you have a lot of experience it is not easy to figure out what the coaches are looking for. Paying attention to body language will give some clues as to how things are going. Also, pay close attention to which players are working with the first and second strings. This is a good indicator of the depth chart at a position.

5. Have something in particuar to look for. Maybe it is one or two players that you are interested in, maybe it is a position. There are a lot of different things going on at once, by focusing on one group you will see more of what's happening with them. For example, pick the O-Line, D-Line, or LBs. Learn the numbers of all of those players and watch them as they practice. This will give you insights that are easy to miss.

6. Have fun. This is a chance to be closer than usual to the players and coaches. Bring a camera and enjoy yourself. Make new friends with other Cardinal fans. There are some people I only saw twice last year; at Camp and at the Super Bowl. (Hello Shane)

I won't be up there until the 8th (which will be crazy crowded so be patient) and 10th. Feel free to say hi to Carddan. (No gameface, but my jersey has my name)

Feel free to post your advice also to help out the newcomers. I welcome the bandwagon fans, it is our job to show them what it means to be a diehard.

I'll be there tomorrow thru Sunday. Too bad the scrimmage isn't until next week, it's usually the first weekend in Aug so I missed on my reservations. Oh well, it will still be fun.

I will post my humble thoughts and observations for those of you in dire need of anything cardinal.

Thanks very much for the advice. I've got family coming in from out of state for this. Yes, I am ready for some football.

You will need sunscreen or shade, the sun burns bright in the clear mountain air!

Yes, there is a lot going on at the same time. I always just focus on the draft picks and see how they are doing.

Ah ... nothing beats sitting under the cool, tall pines with a cold beverage!

I'm wondering what the fan interaction and if there will be any restrictions on the players themselves on the heels of the Super Bowl run. In the past you could literally run into players at every turn in Flagstaff no problem. Now you got a bunch of guys who have turned from nobody's into household names. I recall one late evening up there at Maloney's when half the team was there (our old buddy Bryant Johnson got alcohol poisoning that night) and I ended up at an after-hours party with Cameron Spikes and some other people. That big party night up there this year will probably be August 8th if Whis allows it so head down to Maloney's or San Felipe's if you want to see how many professional athletes get down (just don't tell their wives/girlfriends).

What's the deal on getting autographs? I really just want Adrian Wilson to sign my jersey, but I've got a special edition NFC Championship ball that would be pretty sweet to get autographed by a few players.

Judging by what happened with the Fitzgerald appearance at the Cold Stone Creamery offices yesterday I think this camp is going to be very different from what we've been used to in the past. I'm thinking it's going to be much harder to chat with coaches or players. Once upon a time, I was able to find a coach or player to spend a few minutes with before and after every single practice. I don't care for autographs, I just like meeting a few of the guys.

If it's like it was in the past, there will be an area that has some movable iron barricades set up at the west end of the practice field that the players walk past after the practice is over. Shane pointed it out to me last year when I saw him at camp. (thanks again Shane!)

Last year my sons took a Cardinal flag and a couple of sharpies and stood by the fence about 15 minutes before the practice ended. They ended up getting almost 40 signatures (although most of the handwriting is so hard to read, it's difficult to tell who's autograph is who's :)).

Larry Fitzgerald stopped and spoke with the boys for about 5 minutes, and when he found out that they had traveled all the way from Vegas to see him, he had them turn around and signed their jerseys, too. (very cool). When they thanked him, he told them, "No, thank you, if it wasn't for you guys, we wouldn't be able to do what we do." (again, very cool).

I would guess that this year is going to be a lot different with a lot more fans in attendance, so you might want to get to the fenced area a little earlier.

As for this year, unfortunately because of the economy, I'll probably not be going. But I've got to tell you, if you get a chance to go, you'll probably never regret it.

Yeah, this will be my first and I'm pretty excited about it. I should get into Flag Thursday just after noon and hope to see an evening practice and then the scrimmage on Saturday. Any non football advice for the Grand Canyon. I plan spending all day Friday there, is that going to be enough time? Is there a particular spot at the Grand Canyon that is a can't miss?

Thx in advance.

That's what I was thinking. Probably the only negative about finally being a relevant and winning team.

The one thing I can tell you about the Grand Canyon especially over the summer is that it's obscenely crowded and largely overrated.

EDIT - this applies to day trips to the South Rim. A rafting trip through it or a hike and camp into the Canyon are a whole different story.

Exactly...I've hiked down 3 times, and would do it every year.

My thoughts exactly. Imo, that was always the best part of going to TC.

That aspect is likely to be very different this year. :(

Eat at the Matterhorn Restaurant on the corner of Birch and Beaver. Great German food, and they occasionally have a polka band on Friday nights.

Unfortunately we are leaving Sunday for Utah, so I won't have time (and probably money for that matter to make the rafting trip). I will probably hike down some, but would be shocked if my old, fat ass didn't decide to head up quickly, we'll see I guess. I expected it to be crowded, and we plan on at least stopping by the North rim on the way upto Utah. We may come back and spend more time if its impressive enough and if Zion and Bryce Canyon aren't.

I love Zion and Bryce Canyon and really prefer the North Rim to the South Rim. You can't go wrong IMO.

My favorite restaraunt in the world is in Flagstaff (okay, that I've tried).

The Cottage Place is a small family run restaraunt with a gourmet chef. Its run out of an old house and its not all that far from camp (though, get driving directions online as its a bit tricky to find the first time or two).

Remember, going down is much easier and quicker than going up. It's very easy to get in too deep.

I love the Grand Canyon. To me it is one of the most awesome places that I have ever seen. Some people's reaction is more along the lines of, "Eh, it's just a big hole."

Raft trips in the Canyon generally need to be planned at least a year in advance. I have been fortunate in having rafted the Canyon, and I can say it is an experience that I will always cherish. It was like being transported to another world, where time stands still. Simply awe inspiring.

Have fun!

Since my thread has turned into a visitor's guide to The Grand Canyon, I'll add my two cents. Seeing it from the rim is worth doing once. Hiking down, even a thousand feet or two of elevation is much more impressive. There was a huge difference between looking down into it and being in it.
