Ok usually the evening practices that I have attended in the past have been very upbeat and spirited. This one was pretty low key comparatively and the crowd while decent sized was pretty low key.
I noticed right away that Lutui was not practicing and was on a stationary bike off to the side. I'm assuming it was part of the getting deuce into shape program that Urban had a story on yesterday at Azcardinals.com. Joey Porter also did not practice but appeared fine. I'm assuming it was par of whiz giving older players days off here and there much like last year. Stephen Spach was also not practicing.
The practice started with KO return practice. The only thing of note was that bot PP21 and Ryan William were getting the bulk of the returns. LSH was doing it too but not as much. PP21 is fast. Faster than the Howler and R. Williams and it is evident.
Funny moment during this the QBs were doing the crowd favorite ball in the trash can drill that they have done at cas camp for as far back as I can remember. Daryl Washington coming back from the bathroom I assume and oblivious to this drill walked right in front of a Bartel pass and was hit square in the back around the upper shoulders. He was given a
rousing applause by the crowd. He walked to the sideline and raised his arms and took a bow. Playfully accepting the embarrassing moment and using it to interact with the fans.
During regular drills that the team splits into the QBs were all very sharp and the WR's were catching everything. Not a single ball hit the ground that I could see. Which in training camp is really rare. Especially with the 3 and 4 QBs throwing to the 6-10 WRs.
They started some 11 on 11 and needless to say I was very unimpressed with the starting offense to start out the night. The first play of ones on ones was a Kolb under throw of Fitz.
Followed by a handoff to Beanie who had a hole seemed to explode through it and then
promptly tripped over his own feet for a gain of two yards. He wasn't touched. Then on play 3 Kolb over threw Fitz on a sideline route. They certainly were not sharp starting out the night in 11 on 11. Not gona list play by play what I saw from the back ups because I will be here all night especially on an iPad. But Skelton and Bartel were sharp and made some nice throws.
Back to the ones. First play was a pass from Kolb that was tipped at LOS by I believe D.
Washington but I'm not certain. Acho was also right at Kolb's face on the play and may have had an easy sack but he let up for obvious reasons.
Next was a handoff to Beanie on a sweep. Beanie looked really really fast to me tonight. Faster than I remember at any of the other two camps I have seen him play. He rounded the corner with ease and was pushed out by a CB after about a 12 yard gain. Next play was a Kolscreen pass to Beanie in traffic which was good for no gain.
The next 3 QBs all took their respective turns running the 11 on 11 and the highlite was a
beautiful 45 yards pass from Max Hall to Demarco Sampson. Who fell after catching the ball. But it was a real thing of beauty both throw and catch. The crowd loved it.
They stopped and started practicing KO return again. Again was uneventful. However I know there is altitude but Feely was clearing the back of the end zone by a good 10 yards each time. Even in the valley they would be easy TBs.
After they did some 7 on 7 and the DL and OL did their 1 on 1 drills. All of the QB's in 7 on 7 were kinda sloppy IMO. When i say sloppy I mean they were mainly checking down and when they weren't the throws weren't as accurate as you would like to see IMO.
During the DL/OL drills I really like what I saw out of Ricky pumpkin and David Carter. They seems to have good motors and wouldn't quit. I missed some of it though while trying to watch the 7 on 7 drills. Sam Acho looked good to me as well.
After they went back to 11 on 11 first play Kolb had a beauty of a bomb down left sideline over Fitz left shoulder. It was perfect and in stride dropped right in the bread basket and right in between two defenders. The roar from the crowd was huge. Beanie took a handoff
right down the middle and was gone. He really looked so darn fast. Was happy to not see him trip.
While Ryan Williams was running during 11 on 11 it is really easy to see when you are up
close what people like about the kid. He has a stout powerful frame and is shifty as can be. He easily can stop and turn on a dime. He has an effortless spin move and incredible footwork. But he is definitely nowhere near as fast as beanie. Two totally different styles and
they should compliment each other well IMO.
Hall had another perfect 45 yard bomb to NAU product Davieun Curry-Chapman. It was a perfect strike right down the right sideline and the kid never had to break stride.
Skelton went deep two passes in a row and both were broken up by AJ Jefferson who had
perfect position on both plays. He seems to always turn and look for the ball just like he did in the Raider game. If he can keep that up he should be able to intercept a few one would think.
Towards the end they switched to 11 on 11 in the redone. Kolb seemed to tighten things up and was much more efficient here. He hit Roberts in the end zone fro15 yards out in the middle of the field. Sure TD right? Well no ii cringe to let let you all know Roberts flat out dropped the damn ball. Sucker!
Kolb also handed it off to beanie from about the 10 for a score right up the gut. He then completed a nice 1 yard TD to Fitz on a crossing pattern over the middle.
Skelton threw an out pass from the 15 to isiah Williams. Toler read the play perfectly and jumped the route getting the Int the other way. If Williams hadn't tangled his feet would have been a sure pick 6. Good save by the WR.
Skelton followed that pass with a perfect lob into the corner of the end zone to Doucet. Doucet goes up for it and it's right in his hands. Yet he promptly drops the ball. Another easy drop and disappointing.
Skelton again on next play does a fade route to isiah Williams in the opposite corner of doucets drop. It was a perfect route and a perfect throw. He went up over the defender and caught the ball for the TD right at the perfect height. Beautiful beautiful play.
All in all it was fun as usual. Kolb certainly has an arm and a quick release. He gets the ball downfield with little effort and you can see his mobility. He wasn't as sharp as I had hoped for tonight but again I'm not too concerned. It's just one practice. It happens.
Came away really impressed with #34 #80 #21 #89
Oh forgot to mention Housler.. The kid is big fast and has nice soft hands. If he can make a jump in the competition IMO he could really be something special in a year or two. He just seems pretty effortless when he is running through the seem.
Once again I know it's long and winded but I try to be objective and just post what I see from play to play. Hope you liked it. Will post another late tomorrow weather permitting.
