If he does, I don't think anyone will be upset to be proven wrong. At this point, he'd have to do a lot, starting immediately, to justify his draft status. In the modern NFL, 2nd round picks have to contribute immediately. He's contributing, but it's negatively.

The war cry of the perennial moaner.

"I'm going to whinge and moan and rag on this kid without context because it costs me nothing and if he turns out good I'll just say "Well he sucked THEN" but I'm glad he's good now"

He's not contributing because he isn't being given a chance to. I showed in the Seahawks game how Kyler missed a pass to him for a huge gain and possible TD. I'm guessing people would feel different had our $250m quarterback could look to his right.

Kirk maybe? Murphy started in his rookie season but he wasn't very good.
When have we really had a second round pick, or even a first round pick (minus KM) come in and start game one and play the majority of the season? Defense or offense?

Budda, Kirk, and Murphy (3 years in a row) - 2017, 2018, 2019

We traded our 2nd round pick in 2020 for Deandre Hopkins

2021 - Rondale Moore
2022 - Trey McBride

Yeah, your attack crumbles right there, @BritCard. The context is he has done nothing as a 2nd round pick. His contributions are almost a total net negative at this point. But, yeah, I should be happy with the kid and think everything's peaches and cream lol

Every time he gets a chance, he's seemingly committing penalties. But that earns him...more chances?

He is what he is right now: An overdrafted rookie who was injured in preseason, never got up to speed, and isn't ready.

With what we've seen from the Cardinals during the Kingsbury era, who would you blame? Kingsbury? McBride?

I'd argue this is a systemic issue with the team. It took nearly 5 weeks to see Cam Thomas really play and he's made a small impact, in limited snaps.

Thus far McBride is a giant flop. As per usual, Keim treats high picks like late round picks. Most 1st and 2nd rounders should be ready to contribute day 1.

Our GM is trash.

The context is that he's a rookie that has meaningful snaps in 5 games and has had 3 targets.

Imagine judging a pick after *checks notes* 129 snaps.

Isaiah Likely is is similar scenario in BAL with Andrews as primary TE but he is looking like a 4th round steal for BAL who always seems to do no wrong in player acquisition.

Is Likely better than McBride? Or is McBride just on a team with a quarterback and system that let's him showcase what he can do?

One thing I've noticed is several games now we have lined him up next to Ertz they run a pattern and Kyler always throws it to Zach, who's open. But on many of those plays it appears Trey is open too. Remember Kyler was sick in camp, and Trey was hurt so they didn't practice much together until Trey got healthy. I'm hoping Kyler starts to trust him soon because I do see him getting open.

Playing 2 TE's who aren't great blockers is still better for the run game than multiple WR's, they block better than our WR's do. But if you only throw to 1 of them it makes no sense.

He's producing more. That's not the same as better. Likely is just being used well where McBride is not on a team that always heavily features TE's vs a team that does not.
The cognitive dissonance is strong here. The only reason McBride isn't doing as well as Likely is usage. No other reason?

For me, if I have a young, inexperienced, and not ready for prime time player that keeps crapping the bed when given a chance, I'm not giving him more responsibility.

Lamar Jackson is very similar to Murray and BAL system is more balanced than AZ in that they have almost the same number of rushing attempts and passing attempts on the season so far (235 passing attempts / 234 rushing attempts) compared to 329 PA / 213 RA for ARZ. So in theory because AZ throws more that should mean more opportunities for McBride but that isn't the case.

If you look at their college numbers, McBride has a slight edge in career receptions and yards because of his productive SR year but Likely was the bigger playmaking threat with almost 3 times more TD receptions and YPC than McBride.

McBride would probably be flourishing in Baltimore. Totally different environment there. It's a power team and the tight ends are featured. Totally the opposite of our college style air raid. Keim overpaid a slow, aging Ertz and drafted McBride with a top pick for a coach who would probably not use any tight ends at all if he didn't have to. Another disconnect.

How would you know?

I mean, to support my argument I've shown him ripping off an untargeted 40 yard gain where he was wide open and stats show 4 or 5 games he's played significant snaps he's gone untargeted.

You have "feels".

Likley also passes the eye test…McBride does not. Likely looked special in preseason.

Ravens knew day 1 in camp what they had on their hands.

No, you're using phrases like "untargeted 40-yard gain" as if that means anything whatsoever. You literally just cited this and how he's gone untargeted as reasons we should think he's doing well. Talk about "feels."

How many penalties does he have/penalty yards lost? How many receptions does he have for how many yards? These are tangibles, not "feels" lol

Trey McBride receptions/yards/TDs: 3 receptions, 23 yards, 0 TDs
Trey McBride penalties/type/YDs: 4 penalties, 2 false starts and 2 holding, 27 yards

But, yeah, we should be thrilled with his development thus far. It's totally all Kliff and Kyler's fault.

He's getting targets. You can't really attack a receiver if they aren't getting targets, especially really early in their career.

How do you know? It's all conjecture at this point. What I see is a team that is consistently failing to use all of their weapons. Even with DHop out, the Cardinals had more good to decent receivers than an average team. There is a disconnect between GM and coach that has been present from the very first year they were together. And then their is a disconnect between coach and QB. This isn't exactly a high functioning organization at the moment.

One could argue that the smarter move would have been to let Ertz walk during free agency and draft McBride and play him in Ertz's spots. Even with McBride's struggles, he isn't as terrible a blocker as Ertz would would be meh on WR blocking scales.
