I really don’t blame him for not taking a pay cut, especially in this sport. I don’t wish he would either. Probably have to trade him, though I fear he would magically look like the old Badger on a new team.

I don't really see a reason for us to cut Mathieu prior to the 2019 season as we would only save 4.8 mil against the cap in doing so. The roster bonus is cash savings for Bidwill, and has very little to do with the cap. Also, I am not sure if the date his roster bonus is due prohibits him from being a post June cut designation. If it doesn't, I believe we could break up the 9.3 mil in dead money in half which would gove us a cap savings of 9.45 mil in 2018.

I don't blame him for saying he won't take a pay cut. However, it doesn't change the fact he is no longer worth his contract. He is not the same player and definitely not worth that hit on the cap.

Maybe they can restructure his contract to make it more incentive laden. If not?!?!?

Tyrann Mathieu signed a five year, $62.5 million extension with the Cardinals on August 2, 2016. All the salary cap data here is being calcuated based on a report from PFT which gives the breakdown of the contract. $21.25 million of the contract is fully guaranteed upon signing. The guarantee includes a $15.5 million signing bonus and Mathieu's 2016 and 2017 base salaries. If Mathieu is on the roster on the first day of the 2018 league year he will earn a $5 million roster bonus and guarantee his entire 2018 salary and $8 million of his 2019 salary. If Mathieu is named the defensive player of the year he will earn a $250,000 incentive each time that occurs.

Maybe we can re-sign him with that same incentive.... But make it one bazillion dollars?
Maybe he bites.... Zero chance they would ever have to pay it.

TM said he gave up 9 TDs in 2015 and zero this year. If factually then maybe a bit overpaid but not kicked to the curb just yet.

He a good player
Not great

AND

He doesn’t play FS at all

He’s a slant CB / TE coverage and blitz guy

He’s no Rodney Harrison

He can’t play center field and he’s admitted it. He leaves the SS on an island.

I’ll bet the house you can’t think of the last long throw he OT’d over 25 yards past the line of scrimmage.

He’s so over paid it’s sickening

He makes more than Eric Weddle. Pah-lease. I’ll take Eric 1,000,000 times on Sunday.

What is the value of a stud nickel back now in the modern age of a passing league is the question. This is much like asking how valuable is a situational pass rusher which has proven to get sacks. I was a huge fan of Antrel (Antron haha) Rolle simply as a nickel back because Rolle would totally disrupt the offense with big plays. My point is that a hybrid nickel back is totally worth the money of an elite safety if they are producing like a game changer. Yes, I would have paid Antrel Rolle big bucks to remain a nickel back for us with the way he was producing and can see why the franchise finally did with Mathieu... but he has to produce better than he is now because a nickel back which does not transcend the position does not deserve his current salary when you have a rookie like Budda who fits the role too

When did he say this?

Jurecki reported this, noted "he has a big ego"

Jurecki said he talked to a former Cardinal that is good friends with Tyrann. Friend said Tyrann isnt taking a pay cut and Tyrann believes he would do well in the open market.

He’s a specialist
Not like Troy Palamlu

He’s instintive, and a good player

Problem is he’s a ton slower since his ACL’s

I just posted a crazy thread and suggested we should trade him....saints
Actually we should've tried to do it before the trade deadline a few months back & I said so at the time.

Getting something would be better than getting nada IMO. I heard MJ talking about this a few days ago & just shook my head at not at least trying to make a deal or include him in a deal. :bang:

Cut his ass! As Mitch has said his lackluster tackling along with PP's sets a bad tone & we all know his coverage ability has dwindled tremendously.

TM has looked better the last few games but he’ll never be the player he once was. There’s also the reality that Baker is vertically challenged. Playing them both leaves quite a bit of open air and awfully good QB sight lines.

Coming back from injury is probably the number one issue contributing to drop in "quickness." The other, I'd suggest, is that he's put on quite a bit of muscle/weight.

Good points. HB looks somewhat out of shape, too. He doesn't have the bounce, play to play, that he used to have. His face is more flushed than usual. Pre-snap he does not get into a football stance. Keeps getting caught in grey areas a step or two behind the play, which is surprising for a player of his instincts. But then a few times a game he flashes and gives glimpses of his brilliance.
