I don't really see a reason for us to cut Mathieu prior to the 2019 season as we would only save 4.8 mil against the cap in doing so. The roster bonus is cash savings for Bidwill, and has very little to do with the cap. Also, I am not sure if the date his roster bonus is due prohibits him from being a post June cut designation. If it doesn't, I believe we could break up the 9.3 mil in dead money in half which would gove us a cap savings of 9.45 mil in 2018.

I don't blame him for saying he won't take a pay cut. However, it doesn't change the fact he is no longer worth his contract. He is not the same player and definitely not worth that hit on the cap.

Maybe they can restructure his contract to make it more incentive laden. If not?!?!?

Maybe we can re-sign him with that same incentive.... But make it one bazillion dollars?

What is the value of a stud nickel back now in the modern age of a passing league is the question. This is much like asking how valuable is a situational pass rusher which has proven to get sacks. I was a huge fan of Antrel (Antron haha) Rolle simply as a nickel back because Rolle would totally disrupt the offense with big plays. My point is that a hybrid nickel back is totally worth the money of an elite safety if they are producing like a game changer. Yes, I would have paid Antrel Rolle big bucks to remain a nickel back for us with the way he was producing and can see why the franchise finally did with Mathieu... but he has to produce better than he is now because a nickel back which does not transcend the position does not deserve his current salary when you have a rookie like Budda who fits the role too

Actually we should've tried to do it before the trade deadline a few months back & I said so at the time.

TM has looked better the last few games but he’ll never be the player he once was. There’s also the reality that Baker is vertically challenged. Playing them both leaves quite a bit of open air and awfully good QB sight lines.

Good points. HB looks somewhat out of shape, too. He doesn't have the bounce, play to play, that he used to have. His face is more flushed than usual. Pre-snap he does not get into a football stance. Keeps getting caught in grey areas a step or two behind the play, which is surprising for a player of his instincts. But then a few times a game he flashes and gives glimpses of his brilliance.
