Don't agree at all... The talent differential was glaring. Particularly on defense where, we know all about our youth... however, several of the worst plays made on defense were not made by freshman. It was painfully obvious just how much better UCLA is across the field on both sides of the ball...
Also, while the Bruin defense was being shredded thru the air, they chose to completely take out Foster. So Berc and Strong could go off all they want, but the Bruins clearly said that Foster was going to be a non-factor... And he was just that... 30 yards rushing??
I think the pick 6 hurt, however, we still would've lost this game - and lost it big... Hundley and the Bruin offense could not be stopped any our defense. The only thing that might have made even the most tiny difference was if Kelly was playing as he could've posed an additional run threat.
UCLA is simply a vastly better team, period...
I think there is a very real chance that the Devils lose their next 2, maybe 3 games...depending upon Kelly's health of course.

If we kick the field goal at the end of the half, its 20-20 going into halftime. Let's say the second half still played out the way it did, final score would be final score would be 55-30 which is still pretty bad I guess.

But just looking at the demeanor of the team after that pick 6, it just looked like it was disheartening and took the wind out of our sails. The TV commentators noted it, I noticed, and the pundits have made the same observation.

I am not saying we would have necessarily won but for the pick six, but I just think that the score would have been much closer since our guys would have come out fired up with a lot more energy in the second half. Football is a very emotional game and that play was a tough one to recover from, especially when coupled with the other big plays that followed.

As far as the talent comments, I agree that UCLA has a bigger stockpile of big athletic and talented bodies, no question. Which makes it more impressive that we were able to hang tough in the first half and, but for the miscues, essentially move the ball up and down the field on them.

I understand that the Devils are young but they must have missed 100 tackles.

I don't think I've ever seen a team tackle so poorly.

I actually said after the first quarter, that Graham was pulling off an amazing coaching job as it was crystal clear - even in the first quarter when ASU was up big - that UCLA was freakishly beyond ASU in terms of pure athleticism at just about every position.
However, no matter how great of a coach Graham might be, the MASSIVE talent disparity was just too much to overcome. And sure enough, UCLA owned the second quarter and of course, went on to crush ASU. Even if the Devils had scored a TD or FG at the end of the first half, the Bruins were already taking over the game and there was nothing Graham and the team could do about it.
The harsh...and it's extremely harsh, reality is that the delta between ASU and schools like UCLA, USC, Oregon and even Stanford in the recruiting of elite level talent is gigantic. Graham has stepped it up and has done all anyone could ask for in terms of closing that gap, yet it's still nowhere near enough. And another ugly blowout on national TV won't help and Graham knows it... This loss killed him. Had they lost by 10 or less, it would've been an incredible boost to his efforts given Kelly on the sidelines. But a 35 point loss? It literally crushed him...
The next 3 games will be interesting. I had us losing to USC and Stanford, as well as UCLA. Even the game up at Wash will be very difficult and we may very well lose that game too.
What nobody really wants to talk about is that for all intents and purposes, this was a serious rebuilding year... Even with Kelly, Foster and Strong. The Devils literally don't have one playmaker on defense! Not one. And they are loaded with JuCo transfers who are decent talent for the most part, but most definitely NOT elite level talent.
Needless to say, Graham has a massive, MASSIVE job ahead of him. He's being paid well to do it, but the $& don't necessarily bring W's...

Only good tackle was when Randell got laid out be his own lineman, which lead to a TD

Very frustrating loss. It is tough to gather a lot of good points from this game. I thought Berco was adequete and the young RB's looked good.

Defense and special teams were really bad. Ish Adams is electric in the return game and I can hardly remember a player that has hurt ASU more in recent years. When he is getting the blocks he got on Thursday, it is inevitable he will break 1 or 2 scores a game.

The defense was bad, but the lack of any semblance of a pass rush made them look even worse. Hundley's 5 TD's came easy. Lots of long plays where defenders tackled poorly or gave up on the play.

I also think Todd Graham had a poor game. He was upset and yelling on the sidelines which is not normally his style. Wasting stupid timeouts on meaningless defensive plays finally came back to harm him on the pick-6 before the half. I wonder if ASU would have been able to keep the game reasonable if they get a field goal in that situation.

ASU is going to have to work on manufacturing pressure with creative blitzes a la Todd Bowles. Just no way to sit back, rush four all game, and get absolutely ripped to shreds in the secondary.

On offense Berco showed some really nice throws into some tight windows. He also looked like a QB that was starting his first game. I feel more confident in him than I did before the game. I thought Jaelen Strong's effort was unimpressive. This was a game we needed him to stand out and he was very average. I also liked most of the playcalling on offense and Cameron Smith at WR.

Enjoy it while it lasts for a week. :) It only took literally the craziest week in the history of college football to get you there.
