We had debates on here for weeks whether to take Jarvis Jones at #7 that year. He just looks significantly less explosive than he did at Georgia.

Brandt said he was a step to slow rushing the passer. If he can contain the RB's from getting outside he will be an asset to the D.

I think he should be a solid pick up for us. At least he is in his prime and got to get his feet wet already instead of being a rookie.

On paper, this looks like a simple replacement of an existing player (Okafor) with another (J Jones)

But maybe not. What would be interesting to look into is: Are Jones' skill set and playing style the same as those for Okafor?

And if there are differences (hypothetically, Okafor being more straight-line and Jones having better COD skills) how might Jones be used differently?

Jones is a curious player. Pitts lost Harrison to free agency and rushed in Jones to start. He clearly lacked the technique to be an impact player. He just was too raw. There might just be more here than just the obvious run stopping skills. He should be fine as the 3rd OLB if used in the right alignment. He might surprise and get a few sacks too. I'm not certain I agree he's to slow.

I'm a UGA fan for college so I have seen every college game he played post USC transfer. His final season at UGA was the most dominant season in defense we had since 3 time All American David Pollack. Unfortunately he has been a step slow in the pros and unable to make an impact with the Steelers. He did have a medical issue (spinal stenosis) at USC that caused the transfer to UGA but he got it unde control and to my knowledge wasn't an issue at Pittsburgh.

He is still young enough to break out and have a solid season as the third OLB or possibly ILB. Maybe the Pittsburgh scheme just didn't work with him and he can make an impact opposite the solid OLB's we have now.

youre right. Strong safeties never pass cover ever. They are like diet LBs. In fact if a SS even attempted to cover a WR, theyd get flagged for illegal man-down-field similar to an Olineman
You are evaluating the position based on a coverage it doesn't have primary responsibility of while also assuming that starting 5 to 10 yards back from the ilb position makes no difference when playing deep coverage. I played SS as ilb, couldn't cover well from ilb but did great as safety, the cushion makes a huge difference

Can't Win country:

If we don't sign Jones, SK isn't doing enough.

If we do sign Jones, it's because he sucks.

(Note - I don't know anything about him or have any skin in the game. Just frustrated that I can't get a balanced evaluation of Jones - either folks love him or hate him. Conclusion: When in doubt, trust SK's judgment.

On a more positive note - the dude visited the Cards and then 2 other teams. (When that used to happen, the FA would sign with one of the other clubs. This time, the guy signed with us).

:barf::barf::barf::barf::barf:

I have skin in the game because I live in Pittsburgh and listen to sports radio here a lot. Jones is hot garbage. They didn't pick up an option on him two years ago, making last season his final one before free agency, because he sucked and couldn't get to the QB. His job was to sack the QB, and he managed to do that only SIX times in FOUR years. And, to address another post, no, he didn't start behind Dupree--he was drafted BEFORE Dupree. Opinion here is 100 percent united, and pretty much has been for the past season and a half, that he stinks. Sure, have optimism, folks, but please temper it. There is nothing at all to show us any hope that he'll be better here. Keim gets an F on this one for me.

Sorry Harry, but I have to disagree 100 percent. I'd bring in a street FA and expect more out of Jones in the 3rd OLB spot. He's not going to get a few sacks--he's DEFINITELY slow (remember, I get all the Stiller info here), and hasn't had more than 2 sacks in any season, and 6 for his career. By the end, he was so low in the pecking order that he barely remembered what playing defense felt like. This is a bad, bad signing. I guarantee you the Steelers and their fans are laughing their asses off at us.

It's a one year minimum contract for a guy who may get 20 snaps/game on defense. It's not a bad signing unless you're counting on him to magically become a superstar pass rusher.

Maybe the Cardinals did not get him to sack the QB but want to entertain the contribution if he can stop the run :)

He's too small by far to be a 3-4 DE, and that's not the job description of a 3-4 OLBer.

If you're magically expecting him to be any sort of contributor, it's a bad signing. There's a reason he got less snaps in Pittsburgh, too.

Essentially, it shows Jarvis Jones signing his contract with Michael Bidwill & Bidwill tells him that he expects great contributions from him on defense & special teams.

As soon as I heard what Mike B said regarding "contribution to D and Special Teams" I thought to myself, oh man, does Jones knows he signed up for ST as well, since he didn't play that in Pitt? I wonder if he thought to himself, "Oh Sh*, I wasn't expecting that". Like when you come back from the grocery store and your SO yells at you for forgetting the milk.

I don't know, I thought that whole last five seconds was pretty funny to me...
