[font=verdana, arial, helvetica] Warner was asked today if he wants to re-sign here, he said get it done, this is were I want to be, this is still were I think we can win, and this is were I want to end my career. He would have no problem teaching up a rookie either. Or compete for the job. Josh is gone we are only signing Warner. But incase we sign another FA QB, or bring in the big rook.

Rolle will be back here next week. Not sure when he'll start playing though, I am sure he will need atleast a week or 2 to get back in game shape.

They also said something about how we have only 850,000 left this year so we might have to cut someone, but his salary wouldn't go against this years cap anymore if I am correct.

It was from G @ A talking to Jureki.

I don't think they would have to cut anybody. Unless there was just someone they wanted to cut. While the signing bonus would be prorated and count against this year's cap, you could:

1. Cut his salary (2 million this season) the last few games down to the vet minimum.

2. Make the majority of the bonus a roster bonus payable on March 1st (if that's allowable) or make it payable on the first game of next season (I'm sure that's okay.).

Maybe joeshmo will straighten me out, but I think it could work that way.

If we don't have room to sign Warner now, then we shouldn't now. Wait until the offseason.

Wasn't Rolle placed on IR?

The problem I see with waiting until the offseason is other teams will be bidding and cause the ultimate price tag to be higher most likely than if we were to get something done before the season draws to an end.

We need to keep Warner to bring some stability to the most important position on the field.

If Warner is true to his word, and I think he probably is, then he wants to be in AZ and a contract can be negotiated in good faith now, and signed in March.

Trust me, the bidding war won't be that heated. The price won't be pushed much higher than if we were to sign him today.

Plus, a lot can happen between now and next year. I say wait.

You can sign an extension without using this year's cap to accelerate the bonus. In fact, I believe it is past the deadline to apply bonuses t this year's cap. I agree, get him signed. If you think it is scary now, try going into next year with only Navarre on our roster at QB.

No, They kept him off because they thought there was a good chance of him returning.

No, any bonus he gets between now and the end of the season HAS to be applied to this year's cap (prorated). The deadline that passed was the one where you could push more than the prorated amount onto this year's cap. This is what we did with Rackers. Basically, we ate his entire signing bonus this year.

What that tells me is they were pretty uncertain about resigning Warner as little as two weeks ago. By putting all (or almost all) of Rackers' bonus into this season, it does make a little harder to get a deal done with Warner.

My mistake, you are correct. So you do it as a roster bonus the day after the season is up and sign the extension. All it tells me is that Rackers was more important or more "likely" than the Warner signing. It is easy enough to get done if they want to.

Now, Warner saying this, doesn't mean AZ agrees on wanting him here.

You are right. We'll just see how it plays out. You just know the Bidwills loved beating the Rams with Warner as QB though.

Lets not mistake the importance of this to the team from top to bottom. Not that it's a bad thing.

Why?

It only makes it harder to give Warner new money right now. Giving Warner an extension where they just add another 2 years to his exiting deal doesn't have any effect on the salary cap for this season.

They should absolutely resign Warner and the sooner the better. Let's for once have this position settled, productive, and effective for a few years and shore up the other holes on this team.

Correct. Has anyone, ever, signed an extension without any "new" money (signing bonus)? Surely you don't think Warner would just add 2 years to his deal without one, do you?

As I said before, it can be done, and done in five minutes, when they want to get it done. But, Rackers' deal means that Warner will pocket less on the day he signs the deal, unless he waits until the season is over. Which is a pretty likely scenario. It'll just be much easier to arrange the numbers after Jan 1st.

I seem to remember hearing how Kurt handled the contract negotiations in St. Louis the year after he took over. He showed up for camp while still under contract for the vet's minimum. Not even the slightest threat of a holdout. Basically said whatever contract worked out between his agent and the Rams is going to be way more money than he'd been making so he was not going to sweat it.
I remember thinking at the time how cool it was for a player to actually just be happy to be making millions for playing a game without worrying whether someone else made a couple 100k more than him. If Kurt wants to be here there will be no problem whatsoever working out a contract with him to keep within the cap.

It can be done pretty easily. A few have already mentioned s few ways of doing it. or we can just finally give Hodgins his walking papers, and give him some extra money to get cut off of the IR. We can extend Big Davis which would lower his cap hit this year and next. There are plenty of ways of getting it done.

If I was managment and decided that Warner is the QB to continue the franchise with until a new one is trained up, I would wait until Warner has a bad game (maybe after this week?), then you'll get him at a more realistic contract.

Right now, Warner is NFC O Player of the week. I'm sure Warner and his agent think he's awesome and worth a ton. Just wait until he has an off day and his price will become much more managable.
