Clippers match Maggette. Utah has 23 million in cap room and no free agent is going to go play there. In actuality this makes me very happy because I HATE the Jazz.

It is truly awesome. One less team to worry about in the west now that Stockton and Malone are no longer with the Jazz.

I was actually hoping that Maggette signed in Utah. If the Jazz got Maggette, they would still be a pretty bad team. But it would make the Clippers even worse (even though the Clips are still pretty awful).

Nobody wants to go to a part town like Salt Lake City?! I find that hard to believe!

They still have a shot at Jason Terry, but if Hawks match that offer, they literaly have nobody to sign.

Googs would be a perfect fit for their caucasion society they have up there.

Utah is a joke. I remember many players not wanting to even play there in the regular season, because the visiting team's players are taxed based on their earnings for a day of work for any game which takes place in the state.

Have you seen their roster? On paper, they are the worst team in the league by far. They need players and they have to be getting desperate.

RealGM says that a Penny and Bo for a pick (2nd round?) works.

While it leaves Utah in a worse cap position than a Googs to Utah trade, what good is cap space to them anyway? They need players. At least Penny and Bo can play.

Penny is probably better than any FA pg left. Bo plays 2 positions and has amazing stamina and health for his age.

Just a thought.

And boy wouldn't it clear up some cap problems for us come next summer.

We don't have any cap problems next summer. Googs is off the books right when Marion's contract balloons.

Actually we do.

PHO's projected team pay-roll in 2004 is about 57 mil. (assuming that we will re-sign Tsakalidis about 2 mil.) which is dangerously close to the luxury tax threshold or above of it.

In other words we can't use our mid-level next offseason unless Colangelo wants to pay 10 mil. for a mid-level FA which doesn't seem to be likely.

Well, Penny put together two decent, relatively injury- free seasons. His contract has only three years left (correct me if I am wrong.) so I guess he is going to become tradable next summer.

Even if Suns could trade Penny next offseason (big if) it still couldn't give us any cap room in 2004/2005 season.

Yes, but at least then the Suns could use their MLE.

Dumping Hardaway on the Jazz would hurt the Suns in the short term, but help them a lot, I think, in 2004 and 2005.

I would do it. The Suns, in my opinion, can't crack the top four in the West this year anyway -- and no, I'm not going to get into another argument about whether Phoenix is better than Minnesota. Better to give up a few wins this year in order to have the chance to be really competitive next year.

Did you mean dump him on Jazz in 2004?
If yes then why would Jazz do that?

Penny and Bo for a 2nd rounder...

Hmm, yes, we're getting rid of a lot of salary, but my God, it sets us back another year! We have something good going--and we trade our starting 2 guard and our "energy" guy for a 2nd rounder who probably wouldn't stick with the team?

FORGET IT. I know you guys are concerned with saving money--I'm concerned with product.

Come on, hcsilla, don't be difficult. We all know you're smarter than this.

If Hardaway were gone, the Suns would be far enough below luxury-tax level in 2004 that they could use the MLE without paying double on it. You just said that the projected payroll in 2004 is $57 million. Without Hardaway, it would be less than $44 million. Even the full MLE keeps them well clear of luxury-tax range.

Did you mean dump him on Jazz in 2004?

No, obviously I meant now. It wouldn't help the Suns in terms of talent this year, because they still wouldn't be able to use this year's MLE. But they could use next year's, and most likely get a player who (a) would help the team as much as Hardaway and (b) cost about 1/3 as much.

But would that player help as much as BOTH Hardaway AND Outlaw?

Don't underrate Bo's contribution to this team and its locker room.

Then I misunderstood you.

Of course it would be a smart deal for Suns but again why UTA would do this?
They have definitely better options than this.

That's not only about "that" player.
Suns could use their MLE and 1 mil. exceptions in 2004 AND the MLE in 2005.

Chaplin, I'm not talking about the Outlaw scenario.

That wasn't the question. SirStefan raised the possiblity of sending Hardaway to the Jazz, and you said it wouldn't improve the Suns' financial situation. That is what I was disagreeing with.
