Spearing = leading with your head.

Wilson doesnt really lead with his head, he just punishes defenseless receivers.

But he's been called for spearing before when he's led with his shoulder. The "defenseless receiver" rule is one of the worst ever concocted by the NFL. Punishing receivers has long been one of the most effective ways to play pass defense.

It's like the NBA writing a new rule that if a player is fouled in the paint going to the basket he gets 5 to make 4.

Heard and NFL official on the radio today taling about this hit and he said it was clearly illegal. He said there is a rule in the NFL, which I didnt know about, the states when a defensive player has his head turned upfield and is running along the LOS, an offensive player cannot attack from a position out of his sight line.

He said he didnt even think about 'defensless player' or 'leading with helmet' because it clearly violated tha rule i mentioned above and it was a personal foul...interesting

Isn't that what they call a crack back block?

Thats what I was thinking, but he said technically a 'crackback' block was illegal too. The reason they dont call it is usually the defender is parallel to the LOS when the block comes and the offensive player isnt out of his sight line entirely.

He said this infraction is called all the time, but refs call it a 'personal foul' or 'unneccesary roughness' and most fans dopnt know its an actual rule

He said, to be fair, he has to explain it to most coaches after its called as well...

EDIT: He also said no such rule exists for the defense on a fumble recovery or an INT return.

That is his helmet connecting with the Dallas Linebacker's chin.

Which is why I find it hard to believe that most are defending it now. There was alot of swearing that day! I guarantee you peeps would be screaming murder if Fitz took a shot like that & missed significant time.

He's going to get a big fine for sure. More than that is too much, unless he has past history I don't know about.

That Dallas guy must have been really unhappy because he sure has a long face.

Kurt was hit from behind and the side, looking the opposite direction, no chance to see it in periphery.

This cowboy was hit in the chest looking to the sideline, with a chance to see it coming in his periphery.

Big difference, IMO.

Guy was covering tate in zone coverage and was behind tate for the play - he released to pursue wilson and got tagged in the chest because he wasn't paying attention - not paying attention doesn't make you defenseless .... being in active pursuit (in the lead position at that to make the play) and getting hit by the same guy you were just defending doesn't make you defenseless ...... it makes you stupid

tates left shoulder makes first contact with the right part of his chest

that still image is after the initial impact and taking from the opposite angle of first contact ... even in that though you see tate has his legs on the ground, is hunched at the impact, has his hands in his abdomen, a shoulder into his chest and his helmet is lower than his shoulders .... not his fault guy went crash test dummy & bobble headed onto him

brutal yes .... but it's a brutal game

next time pay attention to your surroundings and you wont get tagged like that - not every hard hit is a bad hit

You might be right, but something tells me Tate intended to drive his helmet up into the guy's facemask. Tate didn't exactly just go forward, if that makes sense.

I think he intended to clear the guy from making a tackle and used leverage given that he is 4" and a whole lot of weight smaller than the LB - he drove through his chest and the first things that made contact were his shoulder and hands ..... from there it's just bracing for the contact - I'm sure he knew it was going to be a big impact - not uncommon for the hitter to also hurt themselves if they throw themselves around sloppy

also giving up a good amount of size to a guy going full steam it wouldn't really be effective if he would of just tried to stand in front of the guy - he would have been trucked

Im thinking the fine he soons receives says you're wrong. Easy to say when it's not one of your best players.

He was defenseless because he didn't have his head on a swivel. That's not Tate's problem.

Good hit, IMO.

Probably so. I think I was just turned off by that tough guy dance he did after the play.

I am real curious about the fine. Is it just me, or were fines light so far this pre/regular season? I think the NFL doesn't want to hand out fines on non-penalized plays. Otherwise, they are admitting their replacements missed dirty calls.

I can see that - not my favorite thing in the world, especially given his penchant for not being able to stay on the field

However, it's funny listening to defensive players complain about it - then go into their sack dance, flexing, posing, etc after every play

Truth. Is it me or did the Cardinals stop doing that as much as they used to?
