I ran the numbers quickly from my website's alltime results. There is some uncertainty in the games from the early 1920s in terms of which ones counted as league games. I compiled that list awhile back based on numerous sources and are accurate as best as I can tell. If I include the 1944 Card-Pitt combine (0-10) and postseason (6-7) I get 503-695-38 alltime. There is also the "playoff bowl" game in the 1960s which we won over GB (which I didn't count as it was not an advancing playoff format, just a postseason "exhibition"). Looks like win #500 might have been against Seattle.

Don't forget the people responsible for the Cardinals getting their own stadium. The money and fan support it has generated has made a huge difference.

huge is an understatement. IMO, the new stadium is mostly responsible for it. Looks like "cheap" Bowtie Bill held up his end of the bargain when the state held up theirs. He always said he'd spend the $$$ as promised if he got the stadium as promised. The stadium is amazing, people actually like being there (unlike SDS), so it of course is going to help create and retain a good crowd for the home team (SDS had a LOT more opposing fans. Likely because they all only had to attend 1 game a year). Better crowd leads to better environment for the team which leads to better performance which leads to players actually WANTING to be here and it all snowballs into what we have today. It's that butterfly effect

Re-did my math (this time with a calculator!) and got 497-699-38 counting only regular-season games. The discrepancy is in the 1920 season, where the profootball reference site includes four games against teams not in the league, and not listed in their 14-team league standings for that season (Moline Univeral Tra, Cincinnati Celts, Lansing Oldsmobile, and Chicago Stayms, against whom we went 3-0-1). Back then it was common to play non-league "exhibition" opponents during the season and wouldn't count in the standings (but would count for $$$). I'm not sure why those games are included, or if they even should be. . . I have seen that season's record listed both ways, as 6-2-2 and 3-2-1 depending on who you ask.

These records only go back to the start of the NFL (1920) and don't count the Cardinals games going back to 1898. Also, they played a variable number of games each season. With that winning percentage, it would be more like 6-9-1. Better, but still not great.

like I said in my post, it's a cycle. Fans don't wanna cook in the hot sun to watch their team get crushed every week. Empty stands, or filled with opposing jerseys is demoralizing as a player. Empty stands also mean less $$$. It's a cycle. Luckily today that cycle is spinning the other direction. So fans are happy because the team wins, players are happy the team wins and have the fans' support, owners are happy to get the $$$ and in turn spend the $$$ to continue to build on the success and attract more fans, etc. It was a depressing thing to watch in the 90s, and is a beautiful thing to watch today

From 1973 to 1991 the Green Bay Packers only had 3 winning seasons. They sold out every year. The Redskins have made the playoffs only 3 times in the last 20 years. They have thousands of people on their season ticket waiting list.

it's because they were all good at some point (especially GB). And have been there forever. They have generations of life-long fans (again, especially GB, hell, they're owned by the town). The "Arizona Cardinals" are still a relatively young team, and were especially so in SDS. That stadium SUCKED too. Everything about the AZ Cardinals in UofP Stadium is 180 degrees from the SDS PHX Cardinals. Don't be surprised if 20 years from now we have the same devoted following as those teams. Respect isn't given, it's earned

The cards have been in the valley for 24 years. I was an Instant convert at age 14. I can only imagine the amount of other converts as soon as the team arrived. sDS was rocking that first year on the valley. Then you add in the sheer droves of kids that were younger and didnt get into football yet and then all the natives born since 1988 etc.... There should be no problem with #s being there to support the team without question. Like I said in other thread its embarrassing to see so many empty seats so clearly empty in the middle of our stadium on TV. It looks awful. I understand that they are club seats and expensuve. But you will never convince me that there isn't money in AZ even with the economy where its at. Plenty of stadiums and cities in economic downturn and you dont see an empty seat in the house. Just think how much louder that place is with an extra 6 to 8 thousand fans screaming that close to field level. AZ fans are just fickle. Always have been. Always will be. Sucks.
