Video Game-A-Day #15: Cyberball (Arcade)

In the year 2022, robot football is the most popular sport where each team attempts to score before the ball temperature reaches critical and explodes, possibly taking a star machine with it. The ball is defused by selecting running/passing plays and getting the ball past the 50-yard line or the goal. Players may buy upgraded robots with team funds earned by performing well in the game.

-----------------------------------------------------

One of my favorite games back in high school. Spent hours playing against other players at Video Round-Up in Scottsdale. They even held tournaments. Fun game. I always used a running team and built up to a titanium RB.

My favorite offensive play was the Steamroller - you could almost always get it to the RB off to the side, or a long pass to a WR over the middle, sometimes bouncing the pass off of a defender.

On defense it would have to be the corner blitz. Really hard for the other player to get certain plays off when done correctly.

Hey BIM - I used to go to Video Round Up in Scottsdale with friends to play this game as well. In fact, Cyberball was the only game we really went there to play. I remember that they had the game set so that a full game, usually 6 quarters, was actually only 4, which was cool.

We used to get games of 2 vs 2 going. I used the same strategy, always picked the Berlin running team and tried to get enough funds to build the titanium running back by halftime.

I remember before running the play "Juice" one of my pals used to always say "This one's going out to OJ".

I've got this game on MAME if anyone wants it. I saw there was a way to play people online once but I never figured it out.

Oh one more thing, one of the coaches on the game looks crazy like Dennis Green.

This was a pretty damn cool game. I remember playing it and my friend looking over at my screen to see what plays I was picking.
