Maybe we can have one dedicated threat similiar to the Nash thread as rumors are certain to come up the closer we get to draft day.

Vince Carter makes $ 18,000,000 next season but his contract is only partially guaranteed. If he gets waived by 30 June 2011 the team will owe him just $ 4,000,000.

The Suns are free to make trades since they were eliminated from the playoffs.

The Suns could take back salaries 85%-115% of what Carter makes. They could also add more players to trades.

The idea is to take back bad contracts of not necessarily bad players and get compensation in terms of draft picks or prospects.
This would allow the Suns to add players for the short term if they want to stay mediocre with Nash and at the same time get pieces to rebuild with. Of course they could still trade Nash anyway and get even more pieces to rebuild.

This all is under the assumption that the Suns would be willing to take on contracts before the new CBA.

Here is a list of the 15 least valueable players in the NBA
1. Gilbert Arenas, Orlando
2. Brandon Roy, Portland
3. Joe Johnson, Atlanta
4. Rashard Lewis, Washington
5. Drew Gooden, Milwaukee
6. Josh Childress, Phoenix
7. Hedo Turkoglu, Orlando
8. Travis Outlaw, New Jersey
9. Brendan Haywood, Dallas
10. Desagana Diop, Charlotte
11. John Salmons, Milwaukee
12. Andris Biedrins, Golden State
13. Baron Davis, Cleveland
14. Corey Magette, Milwaukee
15. Charlie Villanueva, Detroit

Milwaukee has 3 bad contracts, maybe they would be willing to part with Brandon Jennings and or the #9 pick to make something happen.
Philly has Elton Brand and Iguodala and the #16 pick and maybe they would even be willing to part with Evan Turner.

I'll take Roy and his injury concerns. I'd take back Diaw and filler too.

I'm currently re-watching the '06 series against the Lakers. Diaw could've been anything. It's sad to think what he could've been to what he's become.

This is one of the things that is wrong with the NBA. Vince Carter, 18 million? Really? Seriously?

The correct range is 0%-125%. The Suns are under no specific obligation to take back any salary in trade; rather it would be the other team that must give up salary in order to make room for Carter. If both teams are over the cap, the range is 80%-125%.

Brandon Roy doesn't have injury concerns. He is basically done just a question of when he retires.

Did he have microfrature? I don't remember. I know he's had plenty of knee issues. I know he's come back and not ben very effective.

Don't the Suns either have to pay him the 18 mil OR buy him out. I don't think they can use him as an 18 mil trade chip and then the other team buy him out.

Yes they can. He has Bird rights that transfer with any trade. So as long as he is traded before the buyout deadline, the Suns can take back $18 million or so and the other team can buy him out for $4 million.

If this was a big FA summer, it would be golden as teams scramble to create space. Can you imagine what the Suns could have gotten for this deal last summer?

Seriously--even though I know the details of his contract because I just looked it up the other day, it still seemed mind-boggling to me when I read it again in this thread.

Wouldn't the Suns just cut him and pay the $4M? Who's going to trade for him?

E: Its tough finding deals that would work involving Carter that make any sense. What about this?

If Houston decides the Kevin Martin experiment has run its course and they need to rebuild maybe they'd be a potential match. Send Carter & RoLo to Houston for Martin & Brad Miller.

This gets Houston out of a ton of salary obligations for the next few years and they can either cut Vince and try to sign a 2011 FA or just let him play out the year and expire.

I don't really think just the salary relief though would be enough to get Martin from the Rockets, the Suns would likely have to send their lottery pick this year or maybe next years pick to make it even remotely interesting.

For the Suns it would only be done if the plan is to keep Nash. The Suns need a primary scorer and Martin is certainly that, he's reliable for 20+ a game. The Suns certainly wouldn't become a contender for the title, but its enough to probably get them back in the playoffs, make them a fun, high scoring team and Martin could be the face of the franchise as Nash declines.

I imagine something like that would be much more appealing to Sarver than doing the tough thing and blowing it up and being a bottom feeder for a while and losing a lot of ticket sales.

I like HD's idea. I'd then go after a 4 like Speights or Johnson (TOR) or Gibson (CHI) or Hickson and we'd run Nash-Martin-Hill-Johnson-Gortat and Frye or Dudley....

Eh I would not even do that deal for Martin without any picks.

I think if we are willing to trade Carter and take back salary we can get better return than just an overpaid no defense volume shooter guard like Martin, maybe a bit harsh but I don't rate Martin at all.

This would be sort of opposite of what Sarver's philosophy had been thus far. We traded Shaq for two players whom we immediately bought out to save money, and Shaq only had one year left on his contract. Now you are suggesting that we do the opposite. I'd love to see the Suns do something like that for a change, especially if we can get some draft picks in the process. I just don't think Sarver would allow it.

It's also worth considering whether the team would be better off creating some cap space for the 2012 free agency. The Suns currently only have about $28M committed beyond next season. Any Carter trade would likely prevent the Suns from being able to sign a max player, assuming of course they would be able to persuade top tier players to sign here in the first place.

The only way they could pursue the top players is if they played their cards so that they would have caproom to sign both Chris Paul and Dwight Howard to max contracts, or two other star players..

But I highly doubt that our front office has the skills to pull the necessary strings behind the scenes to make that happen.

If not Martin then who? Please outline a specific deal that works with Carters salary number and is even somewhat in the realm of possibility. I even think my deal is way to tilted in the Suns favor and the Rockets probably wouldn't do it, but if you have an idea for another 20ppg+ guys the Suns can get mainly for Carter, please share.

Any deal that in which the Suns give another team $14 million or so in expirings will look heavily lopsided in the favor of the Suns.

Remember Googs and two first rounders for nada (except the dumping of Googs salary)?

Beasley to Minny, Gasol to the Lakers, etc. These were all salary dumps. Find a team that has two starting caliber players at the same position, needs cap space, is in a win now mode. To me, that is Atlanta. Horford and Smith play the same position. They need a center. They have an overpaid Joe Johnson.

If Atlanta could somehow make a run at Tyson Chandler, they would do it in minute.

Here is the one year rebuild program.

1. Buyout Carter.
2. Trade Steve Nash for an expiring and a pick in next year's draft (not protected).
3. Pick up a quality young player in this draft.
4. Stink it up for one year but develop young players.
5. Summer of 2012 I believe they would close to having enough space to go after 2 max free agents.
6. Pull a Miami and sign two FA's that want to play together
7. Oh, and have two lottery picks in a deep draft that summer.

In one summer you rebuild with two lottery picks and two max free agents.

No idea if this is realistic or not, but how about Rudy Gay? His injury problems lower his trade value, and the Grizz have shown that they can do just fine without him.
