QB’s mother: Titans’ Young ‘hurting inside’
1 hour, 35 minutes ago

AP - Sep 9, 7:45 pm EDT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—The mother of Titans quarterback Vince Young said he indicated he doesn’t want to play football and is “hurting inside and out.”

Felicia Young said in Wednesday editions of The Tennessean that her son is tired of all the negativity he’s faced after being booed during a 17-10 win Sunday over Jacksonville. On Monday, Titans coach Jeff Fisher called police to help find him.

“What would you think, if you were tired of being ridiculed and persecuted and talked about and not being treated very well, what would you do? What kind of decision would you make?” Felicia Young said “He may not want to deal with it (all), but you have to get to that point before you make that decision first.

“But we’re not talking about football right now. We’re talking about what would make him happy, and that is the most important thing.”

The phone number for Young’s home is unlisted, and his agent, Major Adams, did not answer his cell phone Wednesday morning. The Titans did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press.

This isn’t the first time that Young has talked of wanting to quit football. He told a reporter last spring that he thought of retiring after his rookie season, a statement he said later was taken out of context.

The No. 3 pick overall in the 2006 draft, Young won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and followed up by helping the Titans reach the playoffs last season with a 10-6 record. He has been criticized for his passing struggles, with nine touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 2007.

His mental state has been in question since being booed Sunday after his second interception during the Jacksonville game. He didn’t want to go back into the game until prodded by Fisher.

He sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee four plays later and could be out for up to four weeks. Fisher said Tuesday night he is only ruling Young out for Sunday’s game at Cincinnati.

Young didn’t go to the team’s offices Monday and postponed his MRI exam until Tuesday. He met with a psychologist at his home Monday along with Fisher and another team official.

Four hours of uncertainty followed Monday night when Young left his home without his phone, prompting someone at his home to call Fisher. He called police to help find the quarterback and had a meeting late Monday night with Young and police crisis negotiators at the team’s headquarters.

Young later drove home.

Felicia Young said her son needs some space.

“It is hard, all he is going through right now. He’s hurting inside and out,” she told the newspaper.

“But he will be fine if people are prayerful and help my baby boy out. He is a young man. He just needs a lot of love and support.”

I apparently completely missed the story that he was thinking about retiring in the offseason.

I'm no psychologist, but it seems we have a guy who's used to being the best all the time, and when he finds out he isn't, his entire world falls apart. He'd rather quit than work to improve himself, or to be anything less than the Man.

Sad, but goes to show that talent isn't everything.

Eh, I'm not gonna hang the kid out for having emotions.

If I'm Young though, I'm calling Mom on the phone and telling her that she's not helping.

This is getting crazy.

VY is coming across as a big time head case and in the ultimate warrior sport I am positive there are guys in the locker room thinking "WTF?"

This is not good for his long term career prospects IMO

Oh my. Sounds like Namond Brice on the Wire.

Nothing good can come of mom whining in the press to "just love and support my baby boy."

Because it wasn't this offseason it was after his rookie year. I missed it too but the reports now say young actually talked to the Titans after his rookie year saying he was considering retiring. I'd never heard that before but it makes more sense now knowing some of that.

Very weird story.

Maybe he was that depressed after losing the last game of the season to the Pats, which kept the Titans out of the playoffs?

That's bad. And he had almost no fire last year. Maybe he just gave up inside.

Think about it...

This is likely, the first time in his life that his superior athletic skills were not great enough to get him through. Mental toughness comes from facing adversity. Athletically and just maybe overall, Young has probably never faced adversity or scrutiny to this extent.

So he hasn't developed sufficient coping skills such as are generally tested and strengthened much earlier in a persons life.

I'm not suggesting that Young not be held responsible, in fact that is the very thing which needs to happen. Too often atheletes are coddled and protected from life's realities. But give the guy a chance to prove himself, rather than piling on right now.

I'm not a big Vince Young fan but this apparent instability seems surprising from a guy who had to work his way out of the ghetto. From the little I've heard, he had a pretty tough situation growing up and was able to come out of it. If he was able to do that, I don't understand why success and adoration from football is so crucial to him. I would think his perspective was better than that.

It's amazing how many people know what kind of a person VY is and are so easy to judge/condemn him.

You don't have to root for him or believe he is a legit NFL QB but jeez...give the kid a break. It's not like he is Pacman Jones or Ryan Leaf.

Pretty confident with your success and life choices to be judging someone and a situation you don't know.

Dont need to know it. He doesnt have the mental prowess to be an NFL QB. that is obvious. He should just quit and save america the drama.

To an extent that's what Skorp and I said too but remember Texas wasn't all easy for him either. He didn't walk in and become an instant star he had to split time with another QB, his passing was questioned, couldn't beat OU at first etc.

He had a maturation process in college too.

Frankly I suspect he's got some sort of depression issue and wouldn't be the first athlete to have that. I just hope he gets help.

Anyone consider who his backup is and what he's done in the past? Maybe Young's had a little birdie chirping in his ear?

I don't think this has anything to do with him not being mentally strong enough.

I'm not a doctor, but it sounds like he suffers from some sort of depression or is even Bi-polar.

Maybe because he's from "the ghetto" some of his old hoodrat buddies/hangers on are putting pressure on him.
If he has depression or other mental health issues, he won't have the ABILITY to "suck it up".

I didn't realize all that. Looks more like:
