Scanning the various depth charts around the league these are some of the players that might become available. I would be curious to know your thoughts about any of these players---and please add ones that you think might become available. I will bold my three favorites, with my top choice in Cardinal red..

RB

Kory Sheets, MIA
Bilal Powell, NYJ
Ben Tate, HOU
Steve Slaton, HOU
Derek Ward, HOU
Curtis Brinkley, SD
Philip Tanner, DAL
Andre Brown, NYG
Kahlil Bell, CHI
Chester Taylor, CHI
Mike Bell, DET
Dimitri Nance, GB
Tyrell Sutton, CAR
Vai Tua, SEA
Keith Toston, STL

While Chester Taylor (5-11, 213, 10, Toledo) is getting on in years, there's still some solid tread on his tires. He excels in the red zone as a runner and receiver and that's why I think he would be the right fit. I like keeping Alphonso Smith too, s a red zone specialist like Taylor would be great.

OLB/DE

Paul Kruger, BAL
Mike McAdoo, BAL* (signed yesterday---undrafted/supplementary draft)
Auston English, CLE
Chris Carter, PIT
Jesse Nading, HOU
Pierre Walters, KC
Antwan Barnes, SD
Mark Herzlich, NYG
Alex Hall, NYG
Dave Tolletson, NYG
Philip Hunt, PHI
Juqua Parker, PHI
Brad Jones, GB
D'Aundre Reed, MIN
Lawrence Sidbury, ATL
Chauncey Davis, ATL
Thomas Keiser, CAR
Jeff Charleston, NO

Philip Hunt (6-0, 248, 1, Houston) led the CFL in sacks last year and he is having a very good camp with the Eagles---but the Eagles are deep at OLB/DE---and if we could acquire Hunt or Darryl Tapp or Juqua Parker (one of them will be the odd man out)---that would be a boon.

S

Larry Asante, TB
DeAndre McDaniel, NO
Colin Jones, SF
Darian Stweart, STL
Mark LeGree, SEA
Akwasi Owusus-Ansuh, DAL
David Sims, NYG
DeJon Gomes, WASH
Josh Bullocks, OAK
Jerome Boud, OAK
Quinton Carter, DEN
Shiloh Keo, HOU
Troy Nolan, HOU
Jordan Babineaux, TEN
Myron Rolle, TEN
Raymond Ventrone, CLE
Robert Sands, CIN

Troy Nolan (6-2, 206, 3, Arizona St.) is the kind of physical safety that would thrive in Horton's system. He's on the bubble right now in Houston. I would be willing to make some sort of a trade for him.

I doubt we can afford him but I was interested in Fred Jackson who's apparently unhappy in Buffalo and wants a new deal because he wants to be appreciated as the starter.

What a coincidence! I was just about to post the same thing.

F-Jack is very affordable, actually. He has two years left on his deal, which pays him app. $1.75M this year and $1.85M in 2012.

How about WR Early Doucet and a 6th rounder for Jackson? He's a good receiver too---a truly excellent fit, imo.

Urban and Jurecki mentioned Slaton today. The Cards apparently liked him in the draft. Going from your list, I'd much rather have Ben Tate, but there's no way he'll get cut. Slaton seems to be the youngest, most talented back who will likely be available. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

The OLB I really wanted the Cards to sign is Thaddeus Gibson, who was cut by the 49ers a couple weeks ago. The Redskins ended up with him, beating out waiver claims by the Bears and the Steelers. He's still raw, but I would have taken him over Will Davis.

I like Chester Taylor because, in addition, he's solid at picking up the blitz.

Would also Luv to have Slaton.

yeah but the reason he's unhappy is he wants more money so if you trade for him you probably have to give him a new deal.

We wouldn't make Jackson the starter over Beanie, so why would he/we want to make that move?

Mitch, I have been combing the lists for the "shocker" or two that is going to pop up. From what I hear C. Taylor is in great shape and game ready. Martz did not use him last year as you know. He can play.

If Ben Tate becomes available, he'll be the best available RB, IMO.

...But I don't think there's a snowball's chance in you-know-where that happens.

I don't want to invest another draft pick in the RB position, especially since we are hoping to just need a 1 year solution until Williams returns.

I also don't want to deplete our WR corps any more that we already have.

So I guess I would rather wait for Chester to come onto the market or otherwise root around in the scrap heap for buried treasure.

I think I'd rather have Taylor than Slaton. Slaton is essentially a bigger LSH, Taylor seems much better suited for 3rd down duties.

You guys kill me. You all VERY much hate on THT for fumbles and for that reason were fine with seeing him go. Yet you would love Steve Slaton??? Makes no sense at all. JMO.

Nance is more similar to RW in running style... although I remember he had injuries that kept him out of some games at ASU

Agreed. There is no way Ben Tate is going anywhere...he is just about as talented as Arian Foster.

I don't see anyone coming available that is better than what we have. That could change if there is a big time salary dump.

Beanie - carries the load
LSH - could be a very effective short term starter with speed and elusiveness.
Smith - Has size and speed but not experience. I would keep him over veterans that have passed their prime.

I was going about to post the same thing. I would prefer C Taylor. But then again I was opposed to trading THT, so I would like Slaton as well.

Agreed, he's a dropper and there's nothing to dispel the fact that coming here would make him better.
Oh, and speaking of RBs and fumbles, what's the over/under on AP's fumble rate if he were a Cardinal?
I'm guessing 200.

Is it Hell? In my mind that's one place a snowball has a poor chance... Jacksonville too I guess.

I didn't say I'd want Slaton (he's redundant to Dash). I'm saying I heart him. I always have. He and Pat White were amazing to watch in college.

I heart THT too.

The RB to keep an eye is Tashard Choice. If DeMarco Murray gets healthy and shows anything, Dallas may cut Choice. He'd be an ideal compliment to Wells.

I agree & IMO Choice has starting potential Cbus and he was way underused here. If I'm not mistaken he's been hurt, but I'd be all over him if I'm the Cards. I don't know how the waiver process works but I'm thinking the Cards would ever get a shot at him because teams would be lined up to sign him.

Nice list, but I don't know which Chester Taylor you saw last year that still had plenty of tread on the tires. He's shot, and the FO clearly isn't interested in acquiring guys on the wrong side of 30 at the RB position anyway.

Taylor looked like Jim Taylor last year. And not Jim Taylor in his prime.

People just need to keep in mind this is a 1 year quick fix. dont go speculating about trading or giving anything up for a RB.

Ryan Williams is still our guy, we are getting a spot filler, not a replacement.

Steve Slaton would be a good plug-in. Split carries with Beanie whos at his last opportunity to show he can produce. If he cant, might as well cut Beanie and go Slaton/Williams, lol.

RB's

Brian Westbrook: Still probably the best choice for replacing what the Cardinals liked out of Ryan Williams. Good hands out of the backfield, experience in the spread, and the ability to shake a defender in the hole.

Tashard Choice: Long shot to be cut in my opinion, but a good option. Not a burner, but nice shake. Decent hands, and can be good in short yardage. Reliable player who showed more in college than I have seen in pros.

Chester Taylor: Solid blitz pickup and hands on third down. Runs with power and balance, can get short yards. A short term investment who is gone in the offseason. Average ability in many areas.

Steve Slaton: Not really what we are missing in Ryan Williams, but solid skills. Good hands, very average handling the blitz. Very fumble prone, and not great in short yardage. Good explosion, and can make defenders miss one on one. Best physical skill of group, but not sure of the match due to his poor blitz pick up.
