Here's the situation. Only days after Bartelstein implied to the world that Kurt operates on a higher moral plane than the rest of us, and thus would never use the interest of the 49ers as leverage to get more money out of the Cardinals, Warner is . . . using . . . the . . . interest . . . of . . . the 49ers . . . to get . . . more . . . money . . . out of the Cardinals.
According to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, Bartelstein has sent to the Cardinals on Warner's behalf a two-year, $23 million proposal with $12 million in guaranteed money split between the two seasons. (As a practical matter, then, the guaranteed money is the first year's total compensation plus $6 million, which makes it more like $17 million guaranteed.)
Warner also is reportedly willing to give up $1 million each year if the team re-signs receiver Anquan Boldin.
In our view, that's a meaningless gesture from a business standpoint, but undoubtedly an effort to "win the mob" and thus pressure the Cardinals into complying.
The Cardinals have the cap space - and presumably the cash - to pay Warner $23 million over two years and to give Boldin a raise. Having Warner "sacrifice" $2 million further confirms that it's all for appearances.
