Green will watch practice before choosing starter

If quarterback Kurt Warner is able to participate fully in next week's practices, coach Dennis Green will have a decision to make. He can stick with Josh McCown as the starter or give the job back to Warner.

Warner, who has missed the past two games with a torn groin muscle, increased his activity in Wednesday's practice and expects to be available for the team's next game, Oct. 23 against Tennessee.

"The way I feel now, even though I know I'm not 100 percent, I feel like I could go out and play, if need be," Warner said. "There's really no doubt in my mind, having just under two weeks before our next game, I'll be in fine shape to play in some capacity."

That capacity will be determined by Green, who wants to see Warner in practice before making a decision.

Backup quarterback Rohan Davey was cut Wednesday, an indication that Green is optimistic about Warner's availability.

A little good news
Warner and McCown received good news Wednesday. Warner received a replacement award for the 1999 Most Valuable Player honor he received while with St. Louis.

Warner never received the original, which is awarded by the Associated Press, so the AP gave him a new one.

A slight scoring change gave McCown a Cardinals record. A reception and fumble by receiver Anquan Boldin against Carolina on Sunday was determined to be a 7-yard loss instead of 11.

The 4 yards increased McCown's passing yardage for the game to 398. In the past two weeks, McCown has passed for 783 yards.

That's the most passing yards in consecutive games in Cardinals history, surpassing Boomer Esiason, who had 781 yards in 1996.

Roster moves
The Cardinals made four changes in their 53-man roster in an effort to bolster their depth in the secondary and the offensive line.

The club re-signed cornerback Dyshod Carter, who played six games for the Cardinals last year, and promoted safety Aaron Francisco from the practice squad. Offensive guard Jeremy Bridges, who started eight games last season, was re-signed, and the team signed fullback Jarrod Baxter, who played with the Texans the past three seasons.

To make room for those four players, the Cardinals cut Davey and placed three players on injured reserve: guard Ian Allen (back), outside linebacker Eric Johnson (hamstring) and safety Adrian Mayes (hamstring).

Bridges lost the starting right guard job to Elton Brown in preseason and was cut Sept. 5.

Baxter was a fifth-round pick by the Texans in 2002 and started 10 games as a rookie. He missed the 2003 season with a foot injury and played in eight games last year. He was cut in late August.

He gives the team a true blocking fullback, something it has missed since James Hodgins suffered a knee injury in the season opener.

The team has nine players on injured reserve.

For at least the Titans game I think that we should start Josh. Give Kurt time to heal better. It also gives the line time to solidify.

If Warner is not 100% healthy by Monday then you should start McCown, Warner needs a full week of 100% practice.

Yeah, I guess.

But it's kind of hard to get jazzed up by McCown's play the last two weeks when you consider it's..

"It's the best back-to-back games by a Cards QB since Boomer Esaison in 1996!" :|

Like I have said before, those stats are a bit skewed. Warner's rating is based off of 3 (?) starts. While McCowns is based on two starts and a horrible half in Seattle.

Based off his last two games McCowns rating is 90 something. Not only that, but I believe that McCown has thrown for more yds, TD's (and INT's) and has a much higher YPA.

Behind a line that is playing much better. The back and forth arguements can go on forever. I want Warner to score more and Josh to take better care of the ball. Meld these two guys together and we have a winner.

Has the pass blocking really improved that much or has McCown's legs helped him avoid some sacks? I would say it is proburbly a bit of both. Step getting healthy, Wake at RT and Brown getting more experince has helped this line out alot. But McCown has also improved in his feel for the pocket as well.

The reason why I would go McCown over Warner is not only based on upside, but based on how they use our recievers. Watching them both Warner just doesn't use our recievers size and strengths well enough (particulary in the red zone). Fitz and Boldin don't have to be 'open' to score TD's.

Looking at these numbers combined with our wins and losses it's laughable anyone wants to sign these guys to long-term contracts based on what little they have shown this year.

Again, unless there was supposed to be a :sarcasm: that you forgot in this post.....THE QBS AREN'T THE PROBLEM WITH THIS TEAM...there numbers are very respectable and I would have no problem resigning both to two year deals. We would like to win at some point in the next two years....bringing in another signal caller or a rookie will not accomplish this. Fix the Lines and run the ball and stop the run....simple as that.

Simple to every other team but with the Cards, NOTHING is 'As simple as that'....lol

I don't want to get into the fact that the whole 'run the ball and stop the run' concept is outdated and tired (look no further than the Philadelphia Eagles and New Engalnd Patriots over the past few years), but it's hard to argue that while the QB position hasn't been the biggest weak link it's been far from a point of strength either. All I've seen so far from both Warner and McCown are two guys who throw for a bunch of yards only to blow it almost every time in the red zone while turning the ball over too much.

Do me a favor Rats - Look at their QB ratings, look at the 18 points per game we've scored this season, look at our record. Tell me why these guys deserve a contract extension? I guarantee you in any NFL city other than Phoenix these guys would be on the hot seat and not on the throne everyone around here wants to put them on. Of course it could just be me, I just happen to think we deserve better than what I've seen so far.

While I agree its too early to start talking about contract extensions yet. I find it hard to be too crtitcal of the QB position on this team when the Oline is finally learning how to pass block, our running game is non-existent, and the TEs are ineffective. We have WRs and thats about it

The only QBs that I could say would be successful with that many things against them would probably be John Elway and Dan Marino ... and thats about it.

i think mccown is doing fine and if he keeps it up he should b extended, 781 yards and 4 touchdowns in 2 games isnt our problem, under 300 rushing yards on the season is.

You know how we shorten team names... like the Cardinals are the Cards, and the Packers are the Pack, etc. Well, my friends and I alway shorten the Titans to the Tits..... so when I read this thread title originally I thought maybe Kurt was looking for a divorce because his wife was too flatchested or something :D

They deserve contract extensions so that we can have the same signal callers for more than one season and so we can get some continuity on this team. I would like to try and win consistantly sometime in my lifetime and if we keep switching Qb that will not happen. These guys have built a trust with Fitz and Q and they are getting them the ball. There affordable and with a decent line that produced a running game they would be in the top third of Qb in this league. They won't be the best but good enough to make us a playoff team every year if they have a running game. Your right we do deserve better than we have seen so far....but the Qb play has not been that bad. If we stop the run and run effectivly we are undeafted right now. We can't keep a lead because the D can't stop a sustained drive and the offense can't salt away a lead because we can't run the damn ball. Thats how I see it.
