If quarterback Kurt Warner is able to participate fully in next week's practices, coach Dennis Green will have a decision to make. He can stick with Josh McCown as the starter or give the job back to Warner.
Warner, who has missed the past two games with a torn groin muscle, increased his activity in Wednesday's practice and expects to be available for the team's next game, Oct. 23 against Tennessee.
"The way I feel now, even though I know I'm not 100 percent, I feel like I could go out and play, if need be," Warner said. "There's really no doubt in my mind, having just under two weeks before our next game, I'll be in fine shape to play in some capacity."
That capacity will be determined by Green, who wants to see Warner in practice before making a decision.
Backup quarterback Rohan Davey was cut Wednesday, an indication that Green is optimistic about Warner's availability.
A little good news
Warner and McCown received good news Wednesday. Warner received a replacement award for the 1999 Most Valuable Player honor he received while with St. Louis.
Warner never received the original, which is awarded by the Associated Press, so the AP gave him a new one.
A slight scoring change gave McCown a Cardinals record. A reception and fumble by receiver Anquan Boldin against Carolina on Sunday was determined to be a 7-yard loss instead of 11.
The 4 yards increased McCown's passing yardage for the game to 398. In the past two weeks, McCown has passed for 783 yards.
That's the most passing yards in consecutive games in Cardinals history, surpassing Boomer Esiason, who had 781 yards in 1996.
Roster moves
The Cardinals made four changes in their 53-man roster in an effort to bolster their depth in the secondary and the offensive line.
The club re-signed cornerback Dyshod Carter, who played six games for the Cardinals last year, and promoted safety Aaron Francisco from the practice squad. Offensive guard Jeremy Bridges, who started eight games last season, was re-signed, and the team signed fullback Jarrod Baxter, who played with the Texans the past three seasons.
To make room for those four players, the Cardinals cut Davey and placed three players on injured reserve: guard Ian Allen (back), outside linebacker Eric Johnson (hamstring) and safety Adrian Mayes (hamstring).
Bridges lost the starting right guard job to Elton Brown in preseason and was cut Sept. 5.
Baxter was a fifth-round pick by the Texans in 2002 and started 10 games as a rookie. He missed the 2003 season with a foot injury and played in eight games last year. He was cut in late August.
He gives the team a true blocking fullback, something it has missed since James Hodgins suffered a knee injury in the season opener.
The team has nine players on injured reserve.
