03/11 22:26 Cardinals: Cards add Brown to o-line
THE NEWS
The Cardinals signed free agent guard Milford Brown to a four-year contract Saturday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Our View
Brown started 12 games for the Texans last year and 16 in four seasons since joining the team via the 2002 supplemental draft. If you're an offensive lineman and you get let go by the Texans, who have consistently fielded one of the worst front lines in the league… well, where else would you logically end up but Arizona?

I doubt this signing is going to make or break our football team. Let's get James signed, and then start the party.

Its a GREAT pick up...I mean, It's not like David Carr has been getting sacked at all in Houston.

Like Pitts, McKinney, Weary, Wiegert and Carr have nothing to do with it. I don't watch enough of the Texans to know where those sacks are coming from....

They have a miserable defense and a miserable passing offense.....but they do run the ball decently well. 11th in the league at 4.16 YPA. Once again, I don't know if Brown had anything to do with that....I'm just going to trust that Loney and Green had enough to tape to get the man they wanted.

At least signing a newcomer on the first day of free agency sends the message that the Cardinals are doing something to fix the line. It cant hurt.

I watched the 1st 3 quarters of the Texans game and Brown got the better of Dockett & Kolodj sp? Wells got most of his yardage running to the the left side. Once Kolodge did a nice spin move around Brown but wells drilled him and once Dockett got the better of Brown - pressure on Warner. Brown looked like he handled his own and sustained his blocks well.

YPC off of Browns back side = 4.5+

Much better then Elton Brown and gave up just as many sacks.

Pass Blocking

Elton Brown = Milford Brown

Run Blocking

Elton Brown < Milford Brown

This signing is all about the price

if his cap figure is $1mm - $1.5 mm or so, this is a fine deal. At that price, you basically have added another young body to the mix and you let competition sort things out. He wouldnt be so expensive that you would feel compelled to start him and dont mind paying for quality depth.

My only reservation is that Denny has this "I am smarter than everyone else" thing sometimes and could very well be inclined to start him regardless of what competition says. We will see.

I think Denny will defer to his new o-line coach... who has stated that the best 5 o-lineman will play.

Didn't Milford allow 5 sacks last year?

This is on a team that gave up 68 sacks.

I'm happy with this signing...he'll be fine with us, and worst case, he's a quality backup. I doubt his cap hit is going to be much.

Remember what Loney said. "The best 5 guys will be our starters". But as we found out last year you need more than just 5 guys. I'll bet buy the tme training camp starts , our o-line will be decided on and set to give the starting 5 as much time to develop together as possible. I'm not saying that someone won't emerge thru training camp to take one of the jobs away from somebody else. I'm saying that the Cards coaching staff will have their plan set and ready to go on day 1.
