Don't be surprised if Peyton retires and the Broncos are also in the hunt.

They have Brock Osweiler for now not sure what they think of him since its all about Peyton right now but playing behind Peyton has to have some advantages

All fair points, but you're forgetting the fact that Arians offense takes a year+ to learn.

And our QB in waiting is a kid who was anointed the starter up until roughly half of a practice was complete, which tells you the next QB to step on the field after Palmer..would be well served to have a year (or 3) under his belt before taking a snap with the mad scientist's super-duper complex, uber hard to grasp offense.

Meh. I think the argument is that it takes a year to master, but Palmer was playing pretty good football after half a season in the system.

I just don't think we have the data to make a clear decision on this. I agree that Logan Thomas is pretty dreadful, but it's a huge waste of resources to burn out a 4th round pick after a year. I've argued from the beginning that you should use a 6th round pick on a QB and just kind of hope you hit a lottery ticket.

But to spend a 2nd rounder on a guy you don't want to play for three seasons? To not put him in a position to start until his contract year? That's pretty terrible policy. I think that a QB is more or less a finished product after his second full season in the league. Tony Romo was an undrafted free agent and he was starting less than halfway through his third season.

Yeah, if you want a guy who will sit for a year or two and learn, I'm not sure you are going to find anyone more talented than Logan Thomas. Buring an early pick on some guy to try and hit the lottery with is silly. Now, if you liked Winston and he fell in the draft, you have to make a call and he will start sooner rather than later.

Unless something weird happens, I'm guessing our QB situation stays status quo this offseason. If the Cards don't like Thomas's development, than I expect in 2016 to be looking hard at acquiring someone when they can get out of Palmer's contract easier.

I'm not a big Logan Thomas fan but he is the definition of a developmental QB. He has all the tools to work with so let's see how he turns out. Taking another QB, just for the sake of taking one, is, imo, a bad idea. There isn't going to be a more physically gifted QB available in the latter rounds as LT.

Now if a college proven, talented, clear upgrade at QB fell into the Cards laps, that's a different story.

What are the tools that you speak of? I watched a a large number of his games at Va Tech for 4 years. Turrible. He is a TE at best. The Frank Beamer offense is about as unsophisticated as they come. This is the scheme that previously produced Michael Vick and Tyrod Taylor. Neither one of those are/were real QBs yet both are much better than Thomas. Michael Brewer transferred out of Texas Tech to Va Tech and went from a promising true freshman playing for K K and putting up nice numbers to a stiff in one year in the Va Tech system. No QB has ever come out of Beamer's offense and been worth a crap. Unless you count the unforgettable Jim Druckenmiller, another Beamer QB.

Thomas has the arm strength to throw through a brick wall, but it is even money he would miss the wall. His asset is his ability to break the pocket and run, which is something Arians does not require. He would be a character right out of Pygmalion if he has any success.

You could use all those same arguments and apply them to Oregon/ Mariota and he's going to be a likely top 5 pick.

Also, Beamer has always been a defensive and special teams coach that looks for something different in his offense. I remember reading somewhere that Logan Thomas only had the vaguest idea of what reads were or how to operate in a functional offense before he came to the NFL. I don't think he was asked to make progressions until his senior season with the Hokies.

I've always liked Football Outsiders comparison of Thomas to Sandor Clegane: an immense physical specimen who struggles with conceptual thinking under pressure.

"Arians offense takes a year+ to learn."

I'm not so sure that's good. Its not good if the offense is too rigid. A good part of Urban Meyer's success is attributed to the fact that he pays close attention to what other coaches are doing and adjusts his offense for what he sees are improvements. Also, shouldn't a coach taylor the offense to the strengths of his offensive players? One of the characteristics for which Bowles has been praised is his ability to adjust to the players he has.

I have seen plenty of Marcus Mariotta and he is a first round pick in this draft, rightly or wrongly . Logan Thomas doesn't deserve any comparison to M M. Whether or not M M will bust or boom is going to be answered down the road. He may be a bust. I do not suspect M M will last until the 4th round. Logan Thomas may be compared more favorably to Colin Klein, who I believe was a better QB coming out of K State and is now a grad Ass't at K State.

I think they compare in that they are both big athletic guys that can't read a defense, or at least they didn't have to read a defense while in college. Mariota obviously plays in a more QB friendly system and has better athletes around him but tools-wise, he's not more physically gifted than Thomas. He's a better QB right now than Thomas but I wouldn't bet on his pro career being any better than Logan's other than the fact that he'll be given more chances based on his draft status.

I'm not stupid enough to think LT is a better prospect than Mariota because he's not. But both have major question marks to them.

Big, physical stature...check
Solid athleticism...check
Big arm...check
Good attitude...check

His issues are throwing fundamentals and understanding of how to progress through an offense. If you believe those are teachable tools, then he has everything else that you can't teach.

You are saying he has a good attitude. Just curious, how do you know this to be true?

The same way most people learn these things...I looked. Had significant struggles in college due to a lack of teaching, offensive weapons, and offensive focus, but still lead his team and didn't complain. Reports through the pre draft process were that he was very teachable, and had a good attitude/willingness to learn. Dilfer. Whitfield. Polian. While they all had some doubts about Thomas's ability to ever reach his physical potential, they did say he had the attitude to succeed. Most of the doubts regarding him were a team willing to give him time to develop his fundamentals, annd teach him how to play QB mentally at the NFL level because he didn't get much work on either at VA Tech.

Ok, I just hadn't seen anything either way, thanks.

And the truth is most of the studs on a division I college program fulfill all those traits regardless of their position and it is throwing fundamentals (hence, accuracy) and being able to read a defense which makes a QB legit lol

Plain and simple.

Either that is Logan Thomas or someone else and this is where GMs earn their money.

I am fine with Palmer as long as we realize he's getting older and we plan accordingly. We should be looking for his heir as soon as practical.

I'm not a BA hater at all but this is the difference between a GM and a HC.

BA lives in the moment as a HC and our long term planning for the good of the team is done mostly by the GM.

We sure do. The Ohio State sophomore QB may come out and would likely be a 2nd or 3rd rd pick. It would take him a couple of years to mature into the job which would fit our time table. Big, strong and with a rocket arm. Just needs some maturity which may keep him at Ohio State.

except the ones who aren't 6'4 240 and who can't run a 4.7 40.

We've been looking for our QBOF sine plugging Matt Leinart in. ML sacked and all others until we desperately sent Warner in and he worked miracles that no one anticipated. Cards got to the big game with him. Then of course have been mediocre since. Having said that, I beleive Palmer can right the ship but if we use him we had better find our next real QB (s) ASAP! Crap!
