Why did we not run that counter run around the edge more often. We ran in three times on the first scoring drive. Got huge chunck. Tried it twice much later and had holding call but both were huge runs.

If you go to the well to often it will dry up. Whiz (IMO) was trying to get us out of terrible down and distance situations and as you pointed out we were getting holding calls against us on this play.

Sigh...it seems to me that people are suffering from inflated expectations syndrome. Nothing less than a total ass kicking would suffice.

The only thing that matters right now is we got a road win against a division opponent.

Seriously what is wrong with this board? The Cards won. They did so on the road. Yes it was an ugly win but take it and move forward.

Why anyone is pissed at the coaches is beyond me?

Based on the thread title, I thought Stout had become a Niners fan over the course of the offseason.

But I was wondering why we didn't do more misdirection plays or screens to counter their overly-aggressive D as well.

Maybe Whiz thought we should beat the lowly Rams without that stuff and didn't want to show too much to a "real opponent" next week?

A good scenario to have is one in which you still get the win but are sufficiently scared to make the necessary adjustments. Hopefully this is it, and we'll be better prepared to face what should be superior opponents in Atlanta and San Diego.

We have a new QB, 3 new starters on the oline (counting Brown at LT) and 5 new starters on defense. OF COURSE, we're going to struggle in the first month of the season! If you were expecting us to be the 09 Saints, you need rehab for your drug problem.

This is a TRANSITION year. Just making the playoffs would be a fantastic outcome for this season.

I don't care that we struggled. FOR GOD'S SAKE I KEEP SAYING I'M HAPPY WITH THE WIN ANY WAY YOU SLICE IT! That STILL doesn't excuse bad decisions by the coaching staff.

Rams were 8/20 on third down. That is average relative to the league. Prior to the final two Rams drives where the Cardinals basically conceded two 3rd and 1 runs for a first down, the Rams were converting 3rd downs at a 33% clip. That would be bottom 5.

So the stats don't support the idea that the Cardinals were conceding easy 3rd down conversions during the game based on the defense called.

Again, the Rams had more than a few drops from wide open receivers on 3rd downs that we simply gave them. The defense conceded it, but the receivers were too sucky to take it

Based on the thread title, you could picture me as a darksider. Everyone needs to remember that I am very, very pleased with this victory. I don't care that we played and won ugly--we won a division game on the road in week one and that is all that matters in the grand scheme of things.

That said, I very much wish that we would have just been sluggish and not clicking. Instead, we were sluggish and not clicking, and the play calling on both sides of the ball hindered us further. I refuse to turn a blind eye on such a blaring negative.

You can't be serious??? You are whining about individual play calling. That's your beef with the coaches??? It was one freaking play. Sometimes you call a play and it works. Sometimes you call a play and it doesn't.

I was miffed when it was 3rd and 16 and we rushed 3 and gave up a 14 yard pass and the YAC was about 10.

Rushing three is as useless as tits on a bull.

I'm sorry, but it seemed like I was constantly screaming at the television today, and much of the time was because our coaching was putrid. When the Rams have the ball and need less than five yards for the first...we continually played 10-12 yards off the ball. What do you do with a rookie QB facing a 3rd and long pinned within the 5 yd line? Why, not blitz and play soft coverage, of course! What do you do when the defense is throwing the kitchen sink at you after a few series? Why, only try ONE EFFING SCREEN pass and no one-step drop passes. What do you do when your right tackle's getting abused? Nah, don't give him help, he'll work it out eventually. What do you do when you're being blitzed like crazy AND you don't throw screens or quick-outs to stem the tide? No WAY should you run a few draws.

My jaw literally hit the floor so many times from our own coaching stupidity. Whiz is for damn certain a better play caller than that. Davis sure in the hell needs to be more aggressive against a rookie QB, and especially with 2 good corners going against dogmeat at receiver. This was a shameful display of coaching, or shameful display of a lack of it. The coaches were very much not well prepared. Yeah, I'll give DA a healthy dose of blame, but a lot of the time he had absolutely zero chance of doing anything positive, and for that I blame the coaches a lot.

You're damn right I'm upset about individual play calling. Mostly at the moment I'm fed up with posters lack of reading comprehension (see MadCardDisease in particular). I've had to waste my time repeating myself and clarifying what is already in print. So, since you obviously can't or won't read the thread, I've put in most of my original post.

This was more than just one play call, or two. Amongst other problems, we clearly didn't game plan well for handling the blitz and were pretty clueless in adjusting to it. I have given you a laundry list of poor coaching schemes and calls. Maybe YOU don't have a problem with it, but I DO.

Then again, why did I bother? You probably won't read it anyway.

K9, I hear you regarding the inability of our LBers to cover, but does that mean we should routinely concede 1st downs?

Wait until Tony Gonzales gets ahold of them this Sunday, it won't be pretty, I fear.

Another topic for another day, but I dont remember why the Cards didn't make a play for him when they had the chance. I know they didn't then and don't now have any real tight ends to speak of'. I thought he only wanted to play a couple more years, imo he could have done the team alot of good....jmho

As an aside, I saw Pope on the Cheifs sideline in the Charger game tonight...not sure how big a role he played, but he has made the roster for 2 years now on what looks to be an improving team..Haley appearently saw something in him. Hell I thought he would be the Cards Novacek when they drafted him....shows what I know

Jesus how Duck doesn't understand that we had a two year window and then you gotta rebuild is beyond me. Warner was retiring. He was one of the top 5 QB's in the league the last two years. You don't replace that.

So according to Duck we should have signed Dansby, Rolle, and locked up some more free agents to chase a Super Bowl with .....Matt Leinart and Derek Anderson?

I think some fans are so used to losing and getting beat they just will their little hearts to think if we just would have kept our players, we would be contending. LOL.

Wiz has a plan. Its a long term plan. Realize that anything we get beyond 8-8 and a QBOF at the end of this year is gravy.

When you lose your all world QB, there is going to be a transition period. Even Green Bay went 6-10 after Brett left. ANd they handled the QB situation as well as possible. Most teams aren't so lucky.

I have news for you Stout. We won that game based on coaching. The team was nervous and looked like you would expect when you have something like 11 new starters. And still they went on the road and beat what looked to me to be a pretty talented QB and a jacked up team. Because the coach taught our players to "finish" plays and because we made the right offensive and defensive play calls at the end of the game, you can see the coaching did their part. Tim Hightower, Max Komar, and to a degree DA are the reason we didn't look prettier winning, not the coaching.

Everyone should be happy we won and hope for the best next week. Its going to take players stepping up for us to win. The coaching ISN'T the issue.
