That is incredible. I know they really wanted to move their salary, but that is not a good deal at all. I can't believe they couldn't have at least gotten 1 prospect out of it.

Its official

By Chad Ford
ESPN Insider

The Sacramento Kings and Philadelphia 76ers have completed a deal that will send Chris Webber, Matt Barnes and Michael Bradley to the Sixers for Kenny Thomas, Corliss Williamson and Brian Skinner, two league sources told ESPN Insider Chad Ford.

The Kings have called a news conference for midnight ET to announce the trade.

The fact that Webber was on the block should come as no surprise to Kings fans. General manager Geoff Petrie had been shopping Webber for some time. The Kings have been concerned about team chemistry and how the offense often stagnates with Webber in the game.

The Knicks were trying to acquire Webber for weeks and looked like the only team with an owner willing to swallow the last three years and $62 million of his deal.

What is surprising, however, is what the Kings will get from the 76ers in return. None of the three players the Kings receive are as talented as Webber. Each has been struggling this year and all three have long-term contracts equal to the three years, $62 million left on Webber's deal. In other words, this isn't a salary dump by the Kings.

Thomas has five years and $39 million left on his deal, plus a 15 percent trade kicker that will raise his salary higher. Williams has two years and $12.5 million left on his deal. Skinner has one year and $4.9 million left on his contract plus another year at $5.4 million that is 75 percent guaranteed.

While the Kings lose some star power, they do acquire some depth … something that has been sorely needed in Sacramento the past two seasons. Once the trade does become official, look for it to seriously end discussions of a Peja Stojakovic trade. Stojakovic wanted out, in part, because of a poor relationship with Webber both on and off the court. With Webber gone, his trade demands will likely end.

So they don't even dump salary.

The sixers still have Robinson to trade for another player if they want to make a serious run for the East with Shaq hurt right now.

Here are the numbers, if anyone would like to be spared the annoyance of looking them up:

Chris Webber ($17.5 million salary this year, expires 2008)
Michael Bradley ($0.7, 2005)
Matt Barnes ($0.6, 2005)

Corliss Williamson ($5.5, 2007)
Kenny Thomas ($4.8, 2010)
Brian Skinner ($4.5, team option 2008)

It looks like a pretty bad deal for Sacramento. They must have been desperate to move Webber before he got hurt again. The players they're getting back are all second-tier talents at best, and they're all in the downsides of their careers at that.

Surely there must at least be draft picks involved.

Edit: These numbers, which are from Hoopshype, don't quite agree with the article in all cases. I have no idea who is more likely to be right.

Ric Bucher is saying that the original deal included Robinson and 1 other player, but for some reason Sac wanted to get bent over harder (paraphrased)

Think the Maloofs couldn't stand Webber? His act wore thin, and they probably still think they can build around Bibby, Peja, and Miller.

Addition by subtraction. Short-term (meaning this season), the Kings suffer. Long-term, the Kings can move on and attempt to re-load.

BTW, Kenny Thomas is a nice player who gives the Suns fits.

Is it just me or did the Kings just get screwed?

Is it just me or did the Kings just bow out of playoff contention?

Boozer got a DNP (the only Jazz player to get one) and so did Butler. Vujacic of L.A. also go ta DNP (though I don't know how much he usually plays.)

I don't understand this trade at all if it does happen.

I may be the only one, but to me this looks like a steal for the Kings.

Webber is done. He can get all the triple doubles he wants, but he's not going to look much better on the court than he does now, and right now he looks even worse than Penny did after his microfracture surgery.

Webber's supermax contract (with three years left after this one) is probably the worst contract in the league right now. Everybody assumed that Isiah Thomas was the only GM with any inclination to take Webber, but Geoff Petrie managed to catch Billy King in a moment of weakness...

The Kings save some money, but more importantly, they get three guys who will still be able to play in two years without embarrassing themselves and everybody around them.

Even this year, Sacramento could still be as competitive as before. Kenny Thomas is underrated IMO, and the Kings might even get the old Peja Stojakovic back--they might even be improved if that happens.

I can understand what you're saying, F-Dog, but Webber had been having a great year this year, so the whole "Webber is Penny" arguement holds very little water. I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say he's having a worse year than Penny--that's ridiculous--there was talk that Webber might have been a candidate to be on the All-Star team--Penny hasn't been at that level for years.

This is a terrible trade. Kenny Thomas is all right, but he's nowhere near Chris Webber's level, and he isn't getting better--the difference between Kenny Thomas this year and Kenny Thomas next year will probably be worse than the difference between Webber this year and Webber next year.

for a sixer next deal

Philadelphia trades:
Glenn Robinson (No games yet played in 2004/05)
Aaron McKie (1.6 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.4 apg in 13.4 minutes)
Andre Iguodala (8.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.9 apg in 32.3 minutes)
Samuel Dalembert (6.9 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 0.5 apg in 23.6 minutes)

Atlanta trades:
Antoine Walker (20.3 ppg, 9.4 rpg, 3.6 apg in 40.2 minutes)
Al Harrington (17.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 3.1 apg in 39.8 minutes)
1st round pick (if possible, didnt check up)

TRADE ACCEPTED

The Hawks love Dalembert. Walker for Robinson doesn't matter for them to much, just a swap of deals. Supposedly they wouldn't be against moving Harrington. McKie is overpaid, which hurts. However, they also get a great prospect in Iggy. They would definitely have to give up a pick if they have one.

Sixers loose out on Iggy and Dalembert, but become immediate contenders with

Walker
Harrington
Iverson
Webber

Just a little idea, I never do this ;)

Where would Walker play, considering they just acquired Chris Webber?

He doesn't have to start. Or they could start them both. Obie wouldn't be against it I am guessing. Walker knows his system and would fit right in. The east is still small so Webber/Walker/Harrington could play against most front lines.

It's a rarity, but I agree with Chaplin. I haven't watched the Kings play much, so I don't have a sense of how Webber "looks," but his numbers have been excellent. In fact, he's very close to his career numbers, with the only appreciable dropoffs being in FG% and blocks.

I'd be terrified that Webber would get hurt again, but if I were confident that he could play at this level for the rest of his contract, I wouldn't be too intimidated by his ridiculous salary. Now, the personality issues are another question altogether...

I would say Webber's movement and lack of jumping ability look very similar to the gimpy Penny Hardaway during his various failed comeback attempts. Webber has somehow managed to remain productive despite his lack of mobility (which Penny usually did not). I thought that in the last Suns - Kings game that Webber looked really bad healthwise, but he was still effective. Maybe a better comparison is Antonio McDyess instead of Penny.
