Here is a little setting of the scene. I love walking to the practice fields, just driving to the Dome on University road, I had to stop while Rolle, B. Johnson, and Boldin (who is practicing this morning, left calf is all taped up) crossed the road in front of me; should have had a sign up that said “Stud-Crossing”. Anyway, about the walk to the fields; picture partly cloudy skies, temps in the low 70’s, fresh mountain air as you walk pine-needle covered paths through a little forest thicket; it puts you on the North-side of the upper fields. Seating is no problem and I go to the little hill on the North side pick out a pick-nick table to set up on. Coffee, roster, Bi-noc, and my lap-top (so I could capture as much of this as I could). I am right behind the goal-posts; in the NEZ again!

Today I am going to concentrate on the glamour-boys. Just watched the receiver and back warm-up drills. I find my self forced to rant about Edge once again; during this drill all the receiver-types are running little out or in patterns while the QB’s float the ball out to them. These guys have not even stretched yet. It looks like a full crew this morning and I can pick out all the backs, TE, and WR’s. Shipp is running smooth, Pope looks like a basket-ball player to me, B. Johnson is looking good (has the look of a #1 or #2 receiver on a lesser squad), JJ is out there…and there is Edge. Every body is floating through this drill but Edge catches the ball with his hand and pulls it in while turning up-field with a burst and accelerates to the next line. Guy practices hard.

Well, stretching is over, and it looks like the Offense (in red this morning) is running undefended plays with different QB’s. Lots of WR screens to the flats. Boldin is working and so is Fitz. I have to stop and comment on Fitz. This year he is stronger and quicker; look out kids, he has the look of leopard among grey-hounds. The receivers are running blocking drills; I think Q has secret desires to be a LB. Moving on to receiving drills again. Warner, Navarre, and Davy are the three QB’s working. Navarre’s motion does look a little tighter, seems to be keeping his elbow tighter to his body in his throwing motion, Davy’s motion is much bigger; Kurt has the best of all. Nothing seems to be wrong with Q, his flashing burst of speed and hard sharp cuts. They work through all the patterns and I see BJ and Warner hook up on a mid-depth pattern across the middle. What makes me sit up is BJ’s acceleration to the ball (which I thought was thrown to far in front of him), he seemed to accelerate and stretch out to snag the ball and continued a burning-turn up-field; that had TD all over it.

Well, they are moving the glamour-boys to the lower fields so I need to follow; did I mention I brought a fold-up chair? Real handy as Denny moves the team around. Another quick dash down a forest path and I watch the offense is running defended (by other O-players) drills. Kurt is taking most of the snaps of this three-quarter speed drill. Lots of play action, lots of Edge coming out of the back-field. Did I mention that Warner (wearing a brace on his right knee) throws a beautiful ball? Let me take this moment to say how lucky we are to have this guy and re-affirm my Warnerite membership. Moving on to WR pattern-drills with four QB’s throwing; lots of balls in the air at once. Pope catches one after juggling it for a bit, this kid will be a beast when he fill out a little more.

They are in full pads today. I think I smell a little contact coming this morning; both O and D seem to be looking for it.

OK! It is time for Red vs. White; full speed. I am going to miss a lot of this because I am watching and not writing; general impressions at best because there is a lot going on. Defense is definitely winning the battle; Navarre is leading the 2nd team O against the 1st team D. O can’t move the ball. Now it 1st team O against 2nd team D. O is clinking, Edge as broke two running plays for big gains, Kurt connects on a play action to BJ. JJ burst outside for a five yard gain. The O is having their way. Back to 2nd team O. Navarre connects on his first completion over the middle to Watkins; took a long time develop and Watkins made a great catch. Navarre follows up with a nice toss and anther great catch by Spurlock. Navarre goes three for three with a out pattern. Make that four for four with a fly-pattern and GREAT catch by Watkins. 1st team Offense again; it’s the EDGE SHOW! Warner tries a quick one over the middle and….Jay McCariens takes it back for a TD! Kurt redeems himself with a quick completion to the out-side for a short gainer.

On to special teams and some punting drills; first team with Player, Pro-Bowler, second team with Fred Capshaw, rookie-challenger. First round (from the goal line) goes to player, cleaner punt with better hang time. Second round is a tie, both kicker boom them out, Capshaw was longer but Player’s hung longer. BJ, Walters, and Spurlock are catching.

I have to wrap this up, my batteries are going. Still to come is some one-one with the OL and DL, receiver drills, and the last Red vs. White full speed drills. Maybe I can write more on that when I get back to the Valley.

The setting at NAU for training camp really is awesome!! Btw, R-heart, that little hill above the field is on the south end of the fields.

Caught a glimpse of Pope being interviewed on one of the local tv stations last night... I was surprised at how young he looks. He seems like a humble young man. With a few years maturity and some hard work Pope could become something really special!!

To all...you are more than welcome; it was a labor of the heart...

I am back in the valley now (it's hot) and will try and finish this up.

Although it was my intention to focus on the glamor-boys, at the end of punting drills the OL and DL formed up in front of me for one-one drills. This drill starts with the first-team OL set for pass protection; only one defensive lineman attacks the line, and he attack only one offensive lineman (in most cases, more about the exception in a minute). The defensive lineman rushes to the passer and the offensive lineman opposite him fights him to maintain pass protection. This breaks down to a classic one-on-one battle between natural enemies; LT against DE (Big vs. Berry), LG against DT (Wells vs. Docket or Watson), C againt DT (Step or Lecky vs. Docket or Watson), RG against DT (Milford Brown vs. Watson), and RT against DE (Wakefield or Bridges vs. Okeafor or Smith). Big won his round and held his ground, Wells held up against Watson (but it was close...); Step battled Docket to a draw; same for Brown and Watson; then Okeafor smoked Wakefield. Sorry to say, but Wakefield should have Ludwigg printed on his chest because everybody beat him like a base drum, all day; Loney coaches him after every play. Bridges did better on the next pass at RT and gave ground grudgingly. I did see Dockett practise against double teams today, I think I remember seeing Watson doing it yesterday. If you asked me to play "name the stud" between Dockett or Watson, it is Watson in a walk. Wow. I can't believe I said that.

I can't say much about the receiver drills because I was focused on the OL vs. DL battle.

The last Red vs. White full speed drills went by in a blur for me, JJ broke a nice run. He was running hard; someone mentioned he seemed to have found his nards in a previous post and I would say I would have to agree. He is fast and may have been blessed to have one of the best backs in the game to learn from and shelter behind while he matures. JJ sure wasn't ready to shoulder the load last year, but he seems to be a lot more comfortable this year. I can't say Shipp grabbed any high-light notes, he seems to be doing his job and moves well when I have noticed; if he returns to his form, pre-injury, we will be comfortably deep at RB to start the season.

The strongest memory of the last Red vs. White set was the energy; both sides of the ball were on the bounce. Lots of pads crashing in the roaring grunts of OL meeting DL; hoots, hollars, and cheers, not from the crowd of fans, but from offensive and defensive players crowding the sidelines. I was thinking there is a special feeling about this team just as thunder came rolling in from the left and the final whistle blew. Just in time to beat the rain.

Parting notes:

Antrell Rolle is like a kid who flys a jet plane while all his freinds have Cessna's. He says he is healthy, believe him because he moves like he has wings. Let me give you two examples: the first was when he was receiving Kick-Offs as he ran up and stopped to catch the ball, the SP defensed formed a bubble Just in front of him (this was three-quarter speed drill and the defense was using enough contact to demonstate containment); just as defense was slowing up and about to tap him down, Rolles started backing up as fast as a CB possible could. Intially, he opened up about a five-yard space as the defensive wave hesitated, then it roared in pursuit. 10 yards later, Rolles is on the bottom of a very energetic pile and the ball pops out. Lots of hoots and laughter from the players while Rolle is having fun playing a game he loves. The second comes in defended receiver drills (light or no contact in this drill, the object seems to let QB and receivers work with DB's in the backfield), receiver after reciever, Rolle races to shadow and mimick their cuts. If you have ever seen birds in flight seem to change direction as one, then you get and idea of what Rolle was doing with the receivers in this drill, not just because he was supposed to, but because he could do it so well.

I did see Hodgins and Bulman rehabbing with a trainer. Well at least Bulman was, it seemed he was working on his right leg or ankle. Hodgins just looked like he was hanging out.

seesred; Berry really looks good. I can't say I saw a lot of great plays from him, but he is working against Big who is playing very well right now. I did mention that Berry hung out after Tuesdays practice to run sprints up the endzone hill. He looks in great shape, is moving and playing with speed and power, and he sure hasn't forgotten how to work hard. As I remember, that is what got him where he is so expect a big, big year from him as Watson shocks the league and demands a double team all the time.

For what it's worth; and I don't know if it was even accurate...

last night on the news a reporter (channel 12 I think) stated that Bridges had taken the starting RT position from Wakefield.

I had forgotten that Bridges had played T in Philly. At least he has a little experience there at the NFL level.

Honestly, as one of the better pass-rushing LDEs in the NFL, Okeafor should be smoking Wakefield. It'll be interesting to see/hear how Wakefield handles run blocks.

You're kidding, right? About Okeafor being one of the better pass-rushing LDEs in the NFL.

Not really. As a pure pass rusher?

1. J. Peppers, CAR
2. M. Strahan, NYG
3. L. Little, STL
4. M. Williams, HOU

Rounding off the Top 10 are guys like Chris Kelsay (BUF), maybe Greg Spires (TB). The problem with Chike is that he's small, and so you can run right at him, and you have to take him out on obvious run downs.

Thanks for the reports Redheart. I couldnt make it this year, I love training camp in Flag. The setting with the green grass, pine trees, nice temps, the mountains in the background with thunderheads moving around, the players so close to you, its like a Field of Dreams for a football fan like me.
