I'm having a hard time believing this board, which seems to be largely okay with the Cardinals going after Bulger, is turning up their nose at Hasselbeck, a player that has run up his numbers on the Cardinals as early as just last season.

Is he the same player he was 5 years ago? No, of course not. Here's a news flash folks: we're not going to get a wart-free QB this season.

Hasselbeck is old
Hasselbeck isn't real mobile anymore
Hasselback has a bad back (though he DID start 14 games last year behind a crappy line)
...but he's in the discussion of best FA QB available, and IMHO, he's the best of the bunch, because:

Hasselbeck knows how to win
Hasselbeck is accurate
Hasselbeck is a guy that will Bring Skelton (or whomever) along
Hasselbeck will be motivated as hell to beat the Seahawks 2x a year

Bulger is the guy. Warner likes him. Jurecki was saying yesterday that Anquan Boldin speaks very highly of him. The ball he throws is very close to what Warner did according to Boldin.

Bulger will come, he will be competent, which is all this offense really needs. Draft, ahem, hate to say it, Mallet. Let the two young qb's duke it out for qbof.

Whoa, they aren't my 49er castoffs...I'm a Cards fan! Smith showed that he can be good in a spread offense...but they didn't do that very often, because they're a running team. Even when they did let him sling it downfield, he continually got replaced every time he made a mistake. That is not an atmosphere conducive to good QB play.

I notice you didn't talk about Shaun Hill, and that's probably because he's become a darn good QB in Detroit.

How about YOU trust ME. They are both better fits. No wait, that's just IMO. Just like Bulger being better is just your opinion.

Yup, I agree with this but Hill isn't coming here; the Lions just extended him and Matt Stafford is made of paper maiche.

Smith was effective in the spread looks that San Fran ran, and I think he could be good here. He's a more athletic version of Blaine Gabbert. People who liked Gabbert should love Smith if all you have to give up for him is money.

It's weird that people hate Alex Smith but he's been significantly better than Matt Hasselback the past three years. In fact, Hasselback hasn't been much better than Marc Bulger the past three years. The last three seasons, Matt Hasselback hasn't put up a QB rating above 75.1.

I'd be on board with Smith...but I'm not at all convinced he's going to be available when it's all said and done. If the Niners had taken Gabbert (or Locker or Ponder) in the first, I think he probably would be. But passing on those guys is a vote of confidence, I think.

I did say a blurb about Hill.....he's underwhelming and certainly not QBoF material.

As for Smith, he did not excel in a spread offense. In 2009, they did themselves a disservice by adjusting the offense to Smith while taking away their biggest offensive threat; Frank Gore. Recall the MNF game against the Niners. They forced 7 turnovers and managed only 24 points. Most of them set them up midfield and he couldnt move the ball more than 15 yards.

In addition to which, look at his stats from last season. Compare his home stats to his road stats. He looks like a good QB at home, but on the road, he is awful. We dont need that kind of inconsistency

There's talk that the 49ers would like to trade for Josh Johnson and either start him or have him tutor in the Harbaugh offense. Doesn't really matter to me either way.

I like Smith as an option but I'm not pencilling him onto the depth chart because I don't think the front office agrees with me. I think that the coaching staff is in love with Bulger and will be caught with their pants down if he says no.

This would be purely stupid. Would cause a total loss of confidence in the FO! Not going to happen!

[sarcasm] That could never happen. [/sarcasm]

It's amazing to me that such presumably smart people working at the apex of their profession can get such tunnel vision and not keep their options open.

Personally, I'm terrified of Bulger. If he comes here, I hope I'm wrong, but the last we saw of him he sure looked washed up to me.

Ravens seem to know what they are doing on things for the most part. They brought him in, does that count for anything? Grasping...

How about this, send DRC to Philly for Kolb. Maybe that's why they took Peterson to replace DRC.

I wouldn't bat an eye if we had an established starter and we brought him in as a backup.

this team needs to stop drafting to REPLACE players and instead draft to BUILD on top of what we already have. this has ALWAYS been our problem.

send next year's first pick for Kolb.

No one's interested in the QB that just had a 102.4 rating in two playoff games? 7 TDs to 1 INT? That's Hasselbeck when he's healthy.

If Kolb is deemed the "solution," then yeah--let's not trade away our position of strength. Otherwise it's two steps forward and two steps back and we're treading water again.

The trade with philly would make sense seeing as the eagles biggest need was CB and they passed on smith.

Why you would take, arguably, the best player at any position available in the draft, and then trade him away for the "promise" of Kolb? The original post said "internet runors" mentioned such a move. From who? From where? That's so silly it's not even worth responding to and don't know why anyone is.

Peterson WILL NOT be traded.

Having Flynn is no better than having Skelton.

The Cards will do what they usually do. Play it safe...as in cheap when it comes to the QB position. They will bring in a guy that they don't have to trade for, has low contract demands, and cost no draft picks. That pretty much leaves two guys...Bulger(most likely) and Hasselbeck.

They will do what Fitz wants them to do. From what's been out in the media is Bulger and Kolb as 2 of the QB's he'd want. The Cards have to appease him or he's gone.
