Ex-Bull Williams works for comeback
By Roscoe Nance, USA TODAY
Former Chicago Bulls point guard Jay Williams is keeping hope alive that he will be able to resume his once-promising NBA career that was cut short by a motorcycle accident two years ago.
Jay Williams spends 1½ hours doing drills, an hour lifting weights and three hours playing pickup each day trying to comeback to the NBA.
By Bob Jordan, AP

Williams, 23, the second player picked in the 2002 draft, works out five days a week in Chicago under the supervision of Tim Grover, the trainer who whipped Michael Jordan into shape for Jordan's second comeback. Williams' daily regimen consists of 1½ hours of drills with Grover, an hour of lifting weights in the morning and three hours of pickup games in the afternoon. He also has 90 minutes of physical therapy on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Here's a Draft Express piece on him.

We've talked on here recently about the possibility of getting Jay... he might cost more than we're willing to pay - I believe he is a free agent so we can't trade for him.

In another thread someone was pumping for getting signing Claxton. IMHO Claxton should be able to find a team to start on, which makes him less likely to come to the Suns. The case FOR him coming for limited money is the size of the opportunity.

If Jay is able to play well, the Suns would be a great place to show case his talents. After two years, the Suns would get Bird rights on him and he could get a major contract in a sign and trade.

If he is any good, which remains unclear.

I'm afraid that Chicago may feel the same way about Hinrich (sp). I would love to see him in a Phoenix uniform and he could be the Suns PG of the future. However, would Chicago part with him? I'm thinking not.

Good idea if such a trade could be pulled off.

The Bulls have a lot of cap space, which is why so many teams are interested in talking to them.

What is so funny? Can you think of a better backup PG option that has not been stated, and is halfway possible?

Before he got hurt, Jay Williams was a very credible point guard. He averaged about 10 pts/5 assists in about 25 mpg his rookie year, and showed flashes of being capable of much more. He was very quick and unusually strong, with natural drive-and-kick skills that would flourish in the Suns system. If he's 80 to 90 percent healthy, he would still be ideal as a backup in this sytem.

Unfortunately, I've read the Nets are dang near idolizing him now, and like the idea of marketing a New Jersey native as Kidd's backup.

If we could get him for a decent price I wouldnt mind taking a chance on this guy the upside could be huge and so could the other effect. I doubt the suns will sign him but if they did it wouldnt be a bad peaice to add to the roster.

For one thing even before the dude got injured he was looking not so good...and that was when he was HEALTHY.

Now he's just some freak experiment...an experiment I dont want us testing on the Suns. None of you have any idea what kind of player he is. I dont care how many drills he does because he's washed up until proven otherwise. Let some other team goof around and experiment with him...teams with not much to lose. The Suns however are contenders on the verge of greatrness and we want players that AT LEAST can run and keep up with our style of play. Just because Williams works out doesnt mean he can play Suns ball. We have some of the best conditioned athletes in the league...Jay don't fit.

We have too many options with players we already have plus draft picks as well. We arnt near desperate enough to bring on slain Williams...NO THANKS.

Of course, because your memory/impression of him is much better than anyone else's.
