Mike Miller... Memphis is shopping him as well. C'mon Kerr, Miller for garbage!

We have an $8 million trade exception. Ron Artest makes $7.4 million.

I think Sacramento would do it, but I am not sure about Sarver.

BTW, I don't think the SUNS are done. A minor tweak.
Yeah, Hoover, it's based on nothing more than a gut feeling.

If this sentence was even readable, I'd debate it. You DON'T think the Suns are done, and that Shaq was a minor tweak? Or that they will make a minor tweak here soon? Obviously they will make a minor tweak, they have to fill a roster spot, so thats insight thats a bit redundant.

Kerr mentioned Frahm, so it'll probably be him.

Mojorizen7, how the trade exception works:

I believe (Im too lazy to look it up because I have a pot of hot water boiling in the other room) Sam Cassells salary is like $6 Mill. this year. The trade exemption the Suns have is worth like $8mill. So they are exempt from having to match salaries w/ LAC in a trade for Cassell up to that dollar amount (8 mill). However, if they do bring in Cassell, and he puts them over the luxury tax (he would), they have to pay dollar for dollar and they don't want to do that.

I believe the Suns are saving 4 million this year by moving Banks and Marion for Shaq (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). So, what they'd be smart to do is try to use the exemption on a player with a salary lower than that and keep their old payroll for this year in tact and stay just under the tax threshold.

Mike Miller... Memphis is shopping him as well. C'mon Kerr, Miller for garbage!

I would LOVE Miller here, he'd really fill in for the loss of Marion at the 3. However he's making OVER 8 million this year, and then has 3 years left. I don't see anyway financially to make the deal work.

EDIT: VV I believe you can't combine the trade exemptions, right? So they couldn't say go for a $11 million player for instance (not that thats what you're saying, just in case anyone asks).

We have the $8 million exemption from the KT trade and a $3 million exemption from the James Jones trade. I thought they expired 1 year from the trade date, but I'm not positive.

Cassell makes $6.15 million this year and is in the last year of his contract....although he'd cost us 12 million with the luxury tax.

I thought the Suns were only saving about $800K with the luxury tax savings
Marion $16.44 mil
Banks $3.966 mil
Total 20.406 mil and $406K more than Shaq's $20 mil salary so with luxury tax it's $812k savings this season. Next season it's more.

I thought it was the trade deadline of the next summer (Oct 20th or something)

But moot point since we need someone now.

TE for Cassell + Birdman for min!!!

Chris Anderson anyone? Eh, we probably don't need another 6'10" guy. I thought he was more of a SF.

I wouldn't mind bringing in Otis George from our summer league team. He was the only other player to play well besides D.J., Tucker, and Banks. I think he's under contract in Europe IIRC.

With a front court rotation of Shaq, Amare, Diaw, and Skinner, I'm pretty sure they'll be looking for a wing defender/shooter. DJ will actually probably get an increased role and be that guy, but thats the impression Kerr gave on the radio today.

Artest would make up for anything we lost with Shawn.

Below is a list of players available that would be good on the Suns and are free agents, NBDL players that are not assigned to an NBA team, or available in trade. We have to pick up a plyer now that we are under the minimum roster.

Rumor has it we are going to sign Richie Frahm. In my opinion he does nothing for us.

Free Agents --
Otis George SF/PF/C 6'9" (240) PPG 10.4 RPG 9.4 APG 1.6 in Suns Summer League - he was with the Suns during Summer league and preseason before being cut since we only had one roster spot available and that went to DJ Strawberry. However Kerr and D'Antoni both said they would keep an eye out for him to eventually sign with the Suns

NBDL --
Carlos Powell 6'7" (220) PPG 22.3 RPG 6.3 APG 4.2 SPG 1.2 BPG 0.3
Kaniel Dickens 6'8" (235) PPG 21.8 RPG 5.2 APG 1.2 SPG 0.8 BPG 0.8
Elton Brown 6'9" (250) PPG 20.1 RPG 10.9 APG 2.1 SPG 0.5 BPG 1.0
Rod Benson 6'10" (225) PPG 12.7 RPG 12.1 APG 1.1 SPG 1.3 BPG 1.3
Darvin Ham 6'7" (230) PPG 9.5 RPG 5.6 APG 1.4 SPG 0.8 BPG 0.7
DerMarr Johnson 6'9" (210) PPG 16.0 RPG 5.3 APG 1.3 SPG 1.4 BPG 0.4 --Previous Suns experience

Tradeable --
Mickael Pietrus for T.E. and 2008 Cleveland (via Suns) 2nd round pick
Charlie Villanueva & Charlie Bell for Raja Bell and Atl Pick
Sebastian Telfair/Gerald Green/Ryan Gomes for T.E. and Atl Pick
David Lee & Fred Jones for Raja Bell and Atl Pick
Andre Iguodala & Kevin Ollie for Raja Bell & Atl Pick (Best trade since 76ers like Bell)
Ron Artest & Quincy Douby for T.E. & Atl Pick (2nd best trade)

The problem with using our trade exemptions is that we're over the luxury tax so we're paying twice as much for a guy. If we trade 1 player then we have to take 2 guys back to get 13 on the roster and I doubt we trade anyone else in our top 8. So that doesn't leave much trade value and I'm pretty sure it's been stated many times on here that you can't combine a player & a trade exemption to make a trade for a guy making more money.

We need a backup PG and/or a backup SF/PF (mostly in case Shaq gets injured). Cassell is interesting & available, but he'll cost us 12 million because of the Luxury tax.

Consider grant Hill played great in the beginning of the season, just not doing so well recently after the injury break, trade for a big name SF is rather nonsense.

Plus the Suns don't have any tradable players now, only maybe Skinner, Piatkowski, and Marks, all with small contract.

The most possible addition would be signing one or two veteran free agents who can guarantee 10 minutes with quality. A backup PG or G/F who can play the point.

Payton sounds most direct. Sam Cassell depends on his buy-out negotiation, and he might choose Boston. Is there any other good FA PG available?

Consider Diaw would still play half of his minutes at PF, I think Penny Hardaway might be a nice choice. He is still a very good defender, he is well known for able to play the point. He can cover 1-2-3.

Grant Hill and Diaw being injury prone and Diaw being inconsistent (to say the least), I would not be against adding someone who can play SF even if he is not a big name.
Why not Hardaway... if shaq agrees.

I'm not sure if it is easy to move Diaw's contract, which is 9M for a couple of more years. I used to hear some teams like him very much, but his stats this season is not good.

Penny should be a good try, at least very cheap for only 500k or so. Don't count on him to be a big-time contributor, but he can give u all the little things in a very consistent base, without even significant playing time. Think about what Payton did for the 06 championship HEAT. The chance for a ring would drive him to play very hard.
