A die hard to me is sticking with your team thru thick or thin. It's wearing there colors even when they are lousy. It's when you lose your appetite when they lose.
It's knowing every move they make. It's squirming in your seat everytime they hand the ball off, or your qb drops back to pass, or when the opposing teams qb is releasing the pass as the camera follows the ball to it's intended target...and then leaping to your feet and screaming INTERCEPTED!
It's paying $179 bucks a year to be able to watch your team every week because you live 2000 miles away. It's scanning the internet once or twice a day( sometimes more) to see if there is a smiggin of breaking news.
It's painting your pool room red and white and filling it with memorabilia.
Thats diehard.
I've been following this team for as long as I can remember. From Chicago to St. Louis and then to Arizona. I can say with pride , I'm a die hard.

ok BIM - now it's just a short step to MY issue...

Anyways - wearing my Cardinals cap to work the Monday after another devastating loss and enduring the jeers.
The best was back in 2000 or 2001 - Raider fans put a dead bird under my windshield wiper along w/ a note about "Raiders kill birds" the Friday before the Cards were to visit Oaktown.
I went to Raider fan's place for the game.
There was only one other Cardinals fan there.
Cards won.
I thanked Raider fan co-workers for the dead bird stunt.
That loss cost the Raiders homefield for the conference championship against the Chowds.
I will never forget.
Well at least til i go senile....

You follow your team even when they move to another city...

You wear your colors to "hostile" sports bars and get harassed just so you can watch your team play...

As an out-of-towner you go to games when you can... (being in VA I've gone to DC and Carolina) and you wear your team colors...

You own several jerseys of old players and you never sell them or give them to the Salvation Army - I still have Seth Joyner and Jake Plummer jerseys and wear them too...

And you absolutely cannot "follow" another team... root for them or hope they win on Sunday is fine - I would love to see the Colts in the Super Bowl but I want the Cardinals there first...

I understand there are many on this board and many not on this board who are die-hards and deserve respect. They have stuck it out longer than most, and many who are much older than me (cough 40yrfan cough) that have been living and dying (mostly dying) with this team for a LOOOOOONG time.

As I said they deserve respect.

But I really don't like this badge of honor, die hard talk. This organization has been an embarrassment when it comes to fan turn out, and it is about to end.

I say if they show up in red, and a smile on their face, even if they ask "Who is this Leinart kid?, I never heard of him." they should be excepted and educated to Cardinals history.

I really do wish I could go down to Arizona and help build the Army of Red but alas responsibility and such.

But I think the die-hards who have helped this team year in and year out should take on a little responsibility and help the Cardinals out by recruiting new fans and getting them into the spirit.

This is SOOOOO exciting!

You would be diehard fan if in three years from today, you still root big for Cardinals and;

1) The team is drafting fourth place in first round of the mock draft, for the second straight time.

2) Dennis Green is TV announcer at ESPN

3) Laryy Marmie is new head coach.

4) Matt Lienhart is back up role to Jay Cutler in Broncos.

Then you will be die hard to still be rooting.

I know that I am a die hard fan. In other posts (and at my painful blog on which I would love other diehards to post) I've listed the many pieces of junk I've acquired over the years (and if you call my cell phone and I don't answer, Kurt Warner will encourage you to leave a message).

Still, I learned what football was in 1973 as a 9 year old growing up in Dallas and spent the first 16 years of my football watching life living and breathing the Dallas Cowboys. I root for Dallas when I watch them, but not when the Cardinals play them. And despite my continued fondness for the Dallas team, I know that I am a die hard Cardinals fan.

That is the worst Crimson. I cringe when I hear someone say that.

Put it this way, If you have ever broken something over a game, had a loss affect a personal relationship with someone, or gotten into a fight over being an Arizona Cardinals fan, you are a "die-hard." ;)

Then what happens when those two teams play each other?
Well I was born in NC and I follow the panthers. I moved here in 92 and have been a cardinal fan since. this my 3rd year of being able to afford season tickets. WHen Carolina came here I was in my CARDINALS jersey rooting for the home team. I believe you can have more than one favorite team, but you need to root for the team in your place of residence, no doubt. JMHO

I'm the same way. My family is from Massachusetts so I grew up a Pats fan. I root for the Pats except when they play the Cards. Then they are my least favorite team.

Go back all the way....

Does being bounced on Jackie Smith's knee count as a die-hard fan? Does watching my mom hem pants for the "cardiac" cards count as a die-hard fan? My husband passed away last August ever hopeful that there was a chance to go to the big show...I will remain loyal to his faith and his unwavering support while the ban wagon drives right on by full of newbies.

The only way you can have "Two favorite teams" and still be a diehard is if your favorite two teams are the Cardinals and whoever is playing a division opponent.... no exceptions!

You're a diehard if --

your red jerseys fall into 3 categories: new, old, and vintage.

you sat in 110 degree heat to watch the opening preseason game, then hours later watched the whole thing again on Tivo.

you bring your sister's new baby a tiny Cardinal bonnet.

you're surrounded by folks watching the big playoff game, and you suddenly jump up and cheer your lungs out -- because the bottom of the screen flashed "Arizona Cardinals hire Coach Dennis Green ..."

I think you're a diehard fan if you rooted for the Cards the last 5 seasons, even though they sucked.

Of course not! You don't lose your history just because a new team moves to town. I remember growing up across the alley from the Kohne family, recent transplants from St. Louis. During the Air Coryell period, they were talking trash regularly, and I remember thinking that if they were going to live in Dallas, they should be Cowboys fans.

My father cringes every time a score is announced during a game that the Cowboys are losing because he knows the crowd will be cheering (I still have work to do to bring the Cowboys to a point where he prefers that the Cardinals beat them: currently, he's pleased with either result).

For me, knowing the level of my fanatacism came while watching "Fever Pitch" and the girlfriend looks in the closet to see an endless line of jerseys. Substitute Cardinals for Red Sox, and that's my closet (and my bed, pillow and a number of walls).

I don't mind the more casual fan who simply hopes the team wins. The only type that upsets me is the type that puts a Cowboys sticker on their car, a Packers flag in their lawn or a Patriots jersey on their back because they'd rather root for a winner (how pathetic is their self esteem?).

Your post has touched my heart!

For Danny:
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and Cardinals always win upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
