What effect do today's cuts have on the cap?
How about the real question. How do these Cuts effect the up comming season?
2 steps forward 3 steps back.
What a freaking joke. I am pissed.
There is a little bit more info that I feel Urban and Sommers should have added to the 3.9 mill amount they gave.
They were correct with the 3.9 Mill number but as to how much it actually saves toward the cap they need to bring up one thing. Since those 3 were in the top 51 salaries and they are now gone the players that were at #52, #53, and #54 on the salary list will now be taking their place. Dont feel like looking it up but they are probably some UDFA with min base deal which means although 3.9 is coming off the books you have to add back in 775K minimum back into the cap. Se we are actually saving about 3.1 Mill. Not exactly a big difference but something worth noting none the less.
We will also now have 2 Mill in dead cap space in 2008.
I don't get into the financial aspects of football much, so correct me if I am wrong...I third being pissed.
We saved 3.9 million by cutting these three players, yet sign Johnson, and have to pay him 7 million this year.
If we don't make this signing alone, we get to keep all 3 players, and have nearly the same amount of cap space as we do now.
Johnson is now among the four top-paid centers in the league.
I truly do not get this organization sometimes.

It wasn't the signing of Johnson, but the structure of his contract which helped to create this situation. Johnson's deal could have been structured such that the Cardinals could have signed him and still have kept Kendrick Clancy and Milford Brown on the roster. (I don't include Ayanbadejo because I do believe that his release was more related to not fitting the new system, than the other two.)

To answer the question, the cuts gave us almost as much caproom as we would have had if we hadn't frontloaded all the contracts this offseason into this season.
So we basically cut 3 guys to get back to where we would have been if we didn't outsmart ourselves earlier.

It's clear to me that these players didn't fit the new offensive and defensive schemes being introduced.
Clear to you? Based on what? The televised minicamp practice?
I'd rather that they proved to be worse fits than the guys they kept after the hitting began in training camp. But, oh well, it's done now.
Based on interviews i've read with the new coaching staff and rewatching the old games on TIVO, etc.
It's not hard to figure out that Femi is way undersized to be a lead blocker on every down. I love Femi but he isn't a lead blocker. To me that is black and white.
I saw Clancy stuggling in a 4-3 last year. There is no way he would be able to hold the line in a 3-4.
Grimm has said from day one that he wants his guards to be atheletic. That is a big reason they moved Wells back inside. Milford Brown is the least athletic Lineman that we had.
Youth.Nonr of that explains why the guys they kept (Jonathan Lewis, E. Brown, Brian Johnson, all the rookie FB UDFAs) are better.
Youth.
Upside.
Salary.

I personally think that E. Brown will have a breakout year under Grimm's new blocking scheme. Elton is very athletic for a big man. He is what Grimm is looking for in an athletic guard. He will be fine as our Backup at both guard positions. Plus he makes backup money.
Jonathan Lewis should have no problem transitioning to a 3-4 DE. He is young strong and quick. I really liked what little I saw from him last year.
I have no idea who Brian Johnson is. I'm guessing that he doesn't cost us anything so it doesn't hurt to have him around during training camp.
The UDFAs are basically free. Why not keep them on the roster? Pure camp fodder.
