Legally I can call myself Native American since I am 1/8th Cherokee.

But the rest of me is all German, Russian, and Welsh so I don't look anything like a native american outside of my feet.

I don't know exactly how the percentages workout, but my mother's grandfather is half Irish, and I probably have more Scotish than Irish.

So 60% is a bit too much. My last name is English, and we think my father has a lot of English, though his lineage isn't well documented.

On my mother's side I'm related to Robert the Bruce (or sometimes referred to as Robert Bruce or Robert le Bruce). He was the "betrayer" in Braveheart, though he was clearly the one who ultimately defeated the British. He also coined the phrase "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again".

I sort of fashion myself as an Anglophile. It annoys the **** out of my Black-Caribbean-Irish girlfriend. :D

Robert the Betrayer, huh??

I've got one of those in my family tree (though not a direct descendant - Benedict Arnold would be a great x10 uncle. He was the reason the Arnold branch of my family settled in Ohio after the war. Even though the rest were patriots, the name Arnold was not too popular in CT.

I am about a third English, third Scottish, third German, with a little scotch-irish and dutch thrown in.

Having worked for the census bureau in 2000, I can assure you that all census takers are trained that a person is whatever nationality they say they are.

Their skin color might be black, but if they say they are Caucasian, then according to the Government....they are caucasian.

Which also reminds me of a couple of old George Carlin lines:
"Caucasian.....Isn't that a mountain range somewhere?"
"Caucasian....a group of monks that make wine....'caucasian brothers...a very fine wine'"
"or a shoe style.....hey man, give me a pair of caucasians in a 9D"

...and George agree with the census bureau.....a person is what ever they say they are.

Personally, like George, I prefer "Blue-eyed devil".

Brave Heart is one of the worst historical movies ever. Most of it is based on legend or the clever mind of Hollywood script writers. I watched a History Channel show where they totally destroyed that movie from a historical perspective.

Don't trust the portrayal of Robert the Bruce in that movie. He fought many more battles against the English than William Wallace, and was the true hero of the fight against the English.

The only problem for the Scots is that it didn't last long.:D

I love the quote from the screenwriter in the History Channel special: "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story"

Of course, the most glaring inaccuracy in the movie "Braveheart"? The decisive battle historicaly was The Battle of Stirling Bridge. In the movie, there wasn't even a bridge!

Irish and German for me - good drinking stock!!!

I am in the mortgage business and on every application I ask the client what nationality/ethnicity they are. Mind you, I do 99% of my business over the phone - so I generally never see the person who I am interviewing. So I ask this guy if he is white, black, pacific islander, etc. The guy replies: " I am a Hindu-European transsexual".

Normally, it takes alot for me to get tongue tied but I stammered for a few seconds and finally said: "I dont have a box for that." The guy laughed and said "No, man (hahaha) I am a white guy."

Embarrassed i checked the proper box and then laughed as well :)

Based on anthropological findings outlined in The Journey of Man, we all descended from a bunch of dudes who lived in Africa, and (with the exception of a small group who wound up as aboriginals in Australia) wound up somewhere north of Afganistan, where they all split up and dispersed to the far reaches of Europe and Asia prior to reaching the New World by various routes (the Bering landbridge being only one of the early ones).

I guess that means we're all bro's and sisters. Can I borrow some money?

Here's an odd tidbit of history FYI...

In the Beauce region of Quebec, which borders the U.S., there's a hotel named "The (le) Benedict Arnold". It commemorates his passage through the area after the unsuccessful invasion and siege of Quebec City.

One can only wonder as to what the true purpose of that questionnaire. It is illegal in my country to ask any of those questions...

Damn Ken, you're good! :D

I can't believe that someone else saw that. That was one major inconsistentcy, but another was their misportrayal of the true hero Robert the Bruce. Another was the Princess that he boinked, she was really a baby at the time. Also if I remember correctly, William Wallace only fought a couple of battles, while Robert the Bruce fought like 20 or more.

I'm also a descendant of John Proctor of Salem, Masschussets. If you are familiar with the witch trials, you definitely know who he is. Luckily his wife Elizabeth was spared, because she was pregnant with my direct relative.

The reason for the questions is to ensure that open and non-discriminatory lending practices are followed.

When they were filming the battle, one of the locals (Irishman) asked Mel Gibson, "Well where the hell's the bridge?" To which Mel replied, "It was getting in the way"

The Irishman smiled and said "Aye, that's what the English said, too".

Myself, I am Irish/Mexican, so I'm genetically inclined to drink and fight :D
