How the Card's FO works, I doubt we go get another RB. If we need 4, they will move someone up. I really think those 3(with a 4th moved up) will be enough for us to keep the running game going still.

Who are you going to move up, if you only have 3 to start with?

I've always like Jerious Norwood but he can't stay healthy. The Rams will probably keep Cadillac over him.

If it's a veteran like Maroney we probably wouldn't sign him until after the first game so his salary is not guaranteed.

Take a look at the PAtriots depth chart. They currently have 8 rb's, two of which were drafted this year in the 2nd and 3rd round. A guy like Kevin Faulk may end up getting cut. Living in Chicago, it's a given that Chester Taylor is as good as gone.

That being said I don't know if either of these 2 guys could fill the role expected of Williams.

I got to think we will sit back and see who ends up getting cut.
Say no to Portis.

If they don't get Willie Parker or Vernon Hayes I think they pick up a camp body for the next two weeks and then look for a #2 after rosters are trimmed. Most teams have 5-6 RBs in camp and won't be keeping them. Look for someone with talent stuck behind a couple of top tier RBs maybe.

Sadly I don't think there's anyone out there who could do what RWilliams could have done for us. The one good thing is that the Cards don't run the ball much anyway.

Say no to the whole list.
Work on getting the offensive line to actually function at a high level and the back is a secondary concern.

It would be good to have a back that was a concern to the secondary.

there was a RB for North Carolina last year, and went undrafted. Shaun Draughn in the Music City bowl, I thought was as good as any RB I saw play last year. I don't kow if he's on anybody's roster. I would think he has to be.

edit: too funny. I looked him up and he's on Washington's roster.

Of course. How could they not have anticipated this...

my question is this... with Beanie being injury prone and not knowing what you'd get from a rookie, with 11 million dollars in cap room, what was the rush in cutting the legs off depth at the one position we actually had it? it's not like any of those RBs are breaking the bank, are they? it's not like we have to create cap room, do we?

I am a little confused. Did you not want them to trade Hightower? Sign a FA RB before the injury to RW? Sign a RB and not trade Hightower?

just saying... taking away depth at a position that had so many question marks and is costing the team very little in payroll doesn't make a lot of sense.

I don't have a problem with them trying to go with the rookie RB and trying to trade THT for something before he left in FA.

The injury last night is not going to change what my position was before the injury.

Agreed. There are a lot of players to be cut before the season begins. I have a hard time believing one of them won't be a higher quality RB than the likes of Barber ot Lendale. Being 5th for waiver claims should also give us a decent shot at getting the best available back.

I think you're right.

One guy who may prove of interest is the Texans Steve Slaton.

I have always liked Brian Westbrook. He's lost a step, but he still is very good in the passing game. Kolb knows him too, which is a plus.

I wonder whether the Cards might consider playing Sherman deep and giving him a few touches to see what he can do in the role of a big (Brandon Jacobs type) RB.

Some names that pop out for me

Brian Westbrook: Not a ton of power, but still able to make defenders miss which is what the staff liked about Williams. He isn't big, but has experience blocking out of spread formations, and he has sold hands which the Cardinals also liked about Williams. Perfect fit, no. But might be the best option out there for what we do on offense.

Ledell Betts: Got 3rd down time in Washington when he was there and has decent hands. Not explosive, but more powerful than Westbrook. Not as good as Hightower, but could be a reliable option behind Wells that runs with more power than LSH.

Tiki Barber: He is old, and has been out of the league for awhile, true. But, he is in great shape and might be worth a flier. He is obviously a sub player at this point, but brings solid vet experience. Not sure he is much of a leader, but he did overcome fumbling issues, and might be able to pass that knowledge to Wells. Low risk for a player that could be versatile.

Some wait and see's...

How many running backs are the Pats going to really keep? They have Ridley, Vreen, Sammy Morris, Ben Green-Ellis, & Danny Woodhead. Might be worth waiting to see who they try and sneak onto the practice squad.

What are the Panthers going to do with Mike Goodson? He is injured rightnow, but was solid last year. Might be worth a 2013 pick.

The Texans has Arian Foster, Ben Tate, Steve Slaton, Derrick Ward and Chris Ogbonnaya. Is Tate available for trade? Will try and sneak Ogbonnaya onto the practice squad? Some possible options here.

The 49ers have Gore, Dixon, Omon and Kendall Hunter. Not great backups, but some low risk possibilities.

There might be solid cut options down the line. I think that the Cards probably will sign a vet soon for preseason reps, and snatch a better upside practice squad/roster cut player closer to the beginning of the season.
