Which coaches have been promoted to HC from inside a fired staff and won?

I asked this question in another thread and got Leslie Frazier, which fills the requirements, but still isn't good enough. If Horton took 2 years from now for us to just barely eke into the playoffs on the last week entirely on the back of one player, I'd be happy, but it wouldn't be what I expected out of our new coach.

Are there any examples of coaches that were retained by an organization that had just fired the losing staff around them, and then had an amazing winning pedigree?

Don't get me wrong, I think Horton will be a great coach somewhere, but I just don't trust it in Arizona. There's too much previous baggage from the early regime.

Wasn't Hanifan on Coryell's staff? Didn't Hanifan have one or two winning years?

But to be fair to Horton, how many times have you ever seen a team like the Cards this year? A disastrous season but 100% of the failure can be placed on one side of the ball, while the defense was not just good but elite.

And yes, I failed to read even the full thread TITLE before posting my idiotic Seifert answer. My bad.

I like Horton and I'm happy with the D and where it might go, but it isn't "elite".

No worries about the answer.

The defense was pretty amazing, but I'm worried that retaining Horton will mean losing Dockett and Wilson... not that they're the players they once were, but I think they have roles on this team. (And it's not just them I'm worried about, but the other players that seem to have lost their will to play for Whisenhunt, and by proxy, some of his staff.)

My concern additionally is that we see a drop off in defensive production with Horton becoming the HC. Just because he's head coach doesn't mean we maintain our level of play on that side of the ball.

Wilson is at the end of his career. It will be sad to see him go but I wouldn't base my HC choice based on whether we will keep him or not. Also I don't think the defense ever lost their will to play for Horton.

This is why looking at the past doesn't mean squat for the future many times.

Because what usually happens isn't the same as what goes on in this instance. Ray Horton is a defensive coordinator that was brought in aside from the rest of the staff. He did a great job. His side carried the team as with an ordinary defense, this team wins 0-2 games tops this year imo.

Horton isn't some guy who barely escaped the guy who brought him here with him when everyone was in their first year. Lots of guys are like that or numerous other things.

The one thing about Horton is that he seems to have always conducted himself in a way that was forward thinking and moving. Get the facts, learn from mistakes, take corrective action.

I believe I remember watching a game, maybe it was one of the old superbowl's, where they talked to Horton or mentioned him wanting to be a future head coach. I believe whoever was doing the broadcast stated they believed him and that he was very knowledgeable. Like a coach on the field or something like that.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I could swear I remember watching that about horton maybe 20 years ago or so. For some reason I think he has the football and management knowledge necessary to be a good coach.

Interesting to know what other similar situations in the past have fared well, but we should also realize nothing about Horton is similar to that sort of trend.

Can he fail? Sure. But I don't see any reason to attach anything that involves Horton to that sort of situation. I think Horton has got an accurate pulse of what goes on at all times, and don't see him being blindsided by much or very often.
