Read a rumor or possibility that the Cards could draft a player for the Eagles at #5 and that pick would be packaged in a deal for Kolb.

March 17th is Gabbert's pro day at Mizzou. He is my pick if the Kolb thing doesn't work out.

I'm assuming that rumor is coming out of Philadelphia, because trading the fifth pick in the draft for Kolb sounds incredibly one sided. I like Kolb, but I don't think I'd be in the minority in saying that I would wretch, violently, if we gave up the #5 pick in the draft for a still unproven player as Mitch pointed out here:

I would wager they are looking at Fairley more than they are Newton.

There are 20+ players working out so it doesn't infer anything about Newton and Fairly specifically. Obviously you check them out.

Apparently Ryan Mallett is looking bad at his Pro Day. Pro Football Focus is going after him. Apparently his 40 was 0.7 faster than Rich Eisen in a business suit.

looks bad because he has disappointing athleticism.but they said he was absolutely sensational during the workout and he can easily make all the throws.accuracy and arm strenght..the workout put him back in the 1st round

Who gives a rats ass about a QBs 40 time? Especially one deemed to be a pure pocket passer. Unless you are drafting a Vick/Newton type player it's essentially irrelevant.

So, I guess, he's as fast as Brady and Manning.

Josh Freeman, David Garrard, Aaron Rodgers, Phil Rivers, and Ben Roethlisberger beg to differ with you.

I heard Mike Jurecki talking about Coach Whis at the Pro Day with Cam Newton. He said that Whis asked Cam Newton to do a 9-step drop and throw some deep out routes. He said Whis came over afterwards and shook Newton's hand. Jurecki metioned Whis was the onlyperson in attendence that asked Newton to do something additional.

They sure made it sound like the Cards might be looking at Newton with the #5.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/03/08/cam-newton-goes-50-for-60-at-tuesday-pro-day/

Newton connected on 50-of-60 passes, which is a substandard “completion percentage” for an elite quarterback prospect at an on-campus workout. For comparison, Matt Ryan was 48-of-52 at Boston College’s Pro Day in 2008, and Sam Bradford went 49-for-50 last March.

It’s worth noting that immediately after Newton’s 60 throws, Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt personally put the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner through more under-center drills and was spotted shaking Newton’s hand.

Still, the general consensus is that Newton has made major strides since the Combine. NFL Network’s Mike Mayock had the most glowing review of Tuesday’s Pro Day.

“This kid can drive the football,” said Mayock. “He can drive it on the deep, outbreaking comeback, he can drive it on the inbreaking Bang-8 or dig route."

“He can make every throw.”

Or it could be pure smoke screen to get someone to make a trade. You can never really tell until the card goes to the podium.

It sounds like most of the NFL Head Coaches were in Auburn but not a single head coach attended Arkansas' Pro Day. I wonder who the Cardinals sent to Arkansas...was it either of the Millers?

More on Mallett...

Asked afterward if he knew his time in the test, Mallett shrugged his shoulders.

"I didn't ask," Mallett said. "I really don't care. I'm not Mike Vick. Everybody knows that."

Mallett reminds me of Drew Bledsoe. I would take a Drew Bledsoe clone.

Nice quote from Mallett.

Absolutely. It sickens me that people are bashing him for a slow 40 time. Most of the best recent QBs have had slow 40 times. They mean absolutely nothing. Cam Newton has a cannon arm and...and...and...oh wait, everything else mechanically pretty much sucks right now. Yet everyone wants to ride Newton's jock. He's athletic and Mallett is not. Yeah, we get that. I'd still be willing to bet that Mallett turns out to be a better starting QB than Newton. Easily.

Round 1 - Peterson/Miller
Round 2 - Mallett

Do it.

I agree. And not only at QB. 40 times are vastly overrated. What I want to know is agility and quickness. JJ Arrington was fast for 40 yards but looked like he was running in mud for the first 10. What good does it do for a guy to run a good 40 if he is always the last guy off the ball at the snap or can't make anyone miss or get any separation?

Mallett isn't going to last until Round 2. I really, really like the kid. I have yet to form my opinion on him fully, though. If we start hearing his character isn't an issue for teams, AND if people think he can adjust and play early, I'll probably be wanting to draft him in the 1st. Otherwise, we'll probably not be able to take him. I still don't know yet.

I don't think so either, and I'm not really even that sold on him. But, i he is there in round two we need to take him.

Having met Whis a few times, he isn't exactly the guy who just walks up and shakes someone's hand. Even around players he is somewhat stand offish. I would consider that pretty significant.

He's not like that at the Cardinals Golf tournament. Very friendly and accessible.
