A new era of Cardinals football officially began Tuesday afternoon as head coach Ken Whisenhunt was introduced during a press conference at the Cardinals Tempe Training Facility.

“We chose Ken Whisenhunt because we believe he’ll bring a brand football that will be physical and tough,” offered Cardinals Vice President of Football Operations Rod Graves during his opening remarks. “He’s recognized as one of the more innovative play-callers in the game, it’s obvious that he’s a winner, he’s been under the influence of great head coaches, and he did a remarkable job with his former team. We expect that he’ll provide us with the leadership, the vision, and the plan to make us a championship team.”

Whisenhunt, who Graves stated, “seemed to separate himself” from the other candidates during the second phase of the Cards interview process, was accompanied by his wife and two children on Tuesday.

“This is a dream come true for me, to get an opportunity to do this,” shared Whisenhunt. “Certainly, when you can a little input into the direction something’s going to go, it’s exciting. The goal is to create a fan base here, where the city is excited about this team. I’ve seen that, especially coming from Pittsburgh when we play in away stadiums, seeing the number of fans that are there that support us. That’s what we want to build here. We want to put a product on the field that this town’s going to be proud of, that this organization is going to be proud of, and make it consistent.”

Whisenhunt recognizes the talent that already exists on the Cardinals roster and feels the organization is making strides in the right directions.

“We’re not trying to change the world,” added Whisenhunt. “We understand it’s not always going to be easy or smooth. In this business, you judged by wins and losses, and that’s going to be our goal, but we just want to be consistent in what we’re trying to do with the organization and what we put on the field on Sundays so we can get this community behind us.”

She obviously wanted to stay in Pittsburgh, too...She's wearing brown instead of red.

A new era of Cardinals football officially began Tuesday afternoon as head coach Ken Whisenhunt was introduced during a press conference at the Cardinals Tempe Training Facility.

“We chose Ken Whisenhunt because we believe he’ll bring a brand of football that will be physical and tough,” offered Cardinals Vice President of Football Operations Rod Graves during his opening remarks.

Throughout the interview process the Cardinals front office also felt it was important to get the players input on the coaching search. They invited several players such as Pro Bowlers Adrian Wilson and Anquan Boldin, quarterbacks Matt Leinart and Kurt Warner and defensive tackle Darnell Dockett to meet with a few of the candidates.

“I received a lot of call after our decision was made to seek a new head coach, and a lot of our players expressed a great desire about the process and wanted to be involved in some way,” stated Graves. “So we took that spirit and invited them to come in and sit down with a number of our candidates and just give their thoughts about where we are as a team, and their desire to be a part of a championship organization.”

“This locker room is filled with players that believe they can win, and we wanted the candidates to see it for themselves,” added Vice President and General Counsel Michael Bidwill.

The opportunity to meet with the players was also beneficial to Whisenhunt.

“It was great insight into the organization because the players are going to tell it to you like it is. The thing that came to me from that meeting was that here you have some guys that are interested in winning football games. They want to do that, and they want to do it the right way. And that’s exciting.”

The ten-year NFL coaching veteran plans to incorporate a brand of physical football, something he discussed with players such as Adrian Wilson during the interview process.

“They’re a physical group of guys, they played hard—that’s one thing that’s very apparent to me when I saw that on the tape, and that’s what got me excited,” said Whisenhunt. “And I think the next step for us, for this organization, is to bring that style—that physical football—to this city, and also play smart, disciplined football.”

After three seasons as offensive coordinator with the Steelers, Whisenhunt hopes to ignite the Cards talented offense with his innovative play calling.

I think that’s one of my strong suits,” admitted Whisenhunt. “When you’re new at a job, there’s going to be a lot of things going on. I know we’ll get a good enough of a staff in here that we’ll have a good situation.”

In addition to his play calling abilities, Whisenhunt also believes he learned a lot from former Steelers’ head coach Bill Cowher.

“I learned how to be organized. I learned how to be consistent as far as relating to and treating the football players,” continued Whisenhunt. “When you have to be tough, when you have to be, as you hear some people say, be a player’s coach. I think that’s the biggest thing I learned from coach Cowher is relating to the players, having an open door policy, where they can come in and talk to you, and there’s things that they want to have input on, which is an important part, because we’re in this thing together. That’s what we want to create here.”

In the coming days Whisenhunt will work towards putting his staff together. He is also expected to meet individually with the coaches that were retained from the previous staff, which includes offensive line coach Steve Loney, wide receivers coach Mike Wilson, defensive line coach Larry Brooks, assistant head coach/linebackers Frank Bush, defensive quality control coach Rick Courtright, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mike Kruzcek and defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast.

“I’ve been in that situation before where the head coach has been let go and you’re kind of in limbo,” said Whisenhunt. “I certainly want to talk to these guys individually, get their thoughts and see where we are. There are a lot of good coaches in this league. The think now, in today’s league, is that a lot of these guys are under contract and you have to get permission to talk to them, so we’re in the process of going through that right now.”

Although Whisenhunt’s staff is yet to be determined, the one thing he made clear is his vision for success.

I don’t think you live in the past,” confirmed Whisenhunt. “I think that you look at what they did on the tape—that’s what I looked at, that’s what other people in the league have said to me about this organization. I think you stay consistent in the message you’re giving to the players and to the community of what you want to get, what you want to accomplish. Like I said, that’s a disciplined, tough, smart football team that’s going to show up on Sunday and play their guts out.”
