What is Berry making? I could see him getting cut if his cap hit is high.

I wasn't impressed much with Clancy last year. Now with Branch and Watson at NT there isn't room for Clancy. If the Cardinals do go to the 3-4 then Clancy could be the odd man out. I would have no problem with them getting rid of him.

it just doesn't make sense to me that coming in to the offseason so flush with cap space that there is a chance we have to cut people - not because Wiz doesn'tlike them perse, but because we need the money to sign our rookies. Just the fact that this is being talked about as a possibility is a head-scratcher.

I mean, did we just boost the belly of the team, but in process we had to gut the belly of the team to do it? That won't make any sense.

Well, I would until the coaches are certain that Watson and Branch can handle the responsibilities.

Don't know what's required to impress you, but our run D was always better with Clancy in the line.

Somers and Urban don't write such things unless they've heard talk around the complex. Yes, the article only discusses possibilities. But, it's interesting that cuts are being discussed at ALL. Three months ago, anyone floating the idea of cutting any of those guys due to cap space would've been laughed out of town.

Don't doubt that, but talk is cheap.

P.S. if management has a few re-negotiations in mind, it doesn't hurt to float these possibilities.

I think that's what was disturbing. A couple weeks ago, the possibilities of restructured contracts was floated: Warner, Berry, and Okeafor were mentioned specifically. Now, we're hearing about cuts?

I disagree that we don't need Clancy on the roster. Maybe you're willing to trust the defensive line to a second year, second day pick and a fella that's never played a down in the NFL, but I'm not. Kenderick Clancy is proven, both in the 4-3 and the 3-4. When he arrived in the Valley, our run defense suddenly got much better.

The long and short of it is that this defensive line is better with Clancy/Watson/Lewis in rotation at NT with Smith/Dockett/Branch/Cooper rotating at DE than with Branch/Watson/Lewis at NT and Smith/Dockett/Cooper at DE. If we have to cut Kendrick Clancy for cap purposes, it's another indictment of Rod Graves' lack of vision for this roster.

It was the Denver game that I rewatched and I focused on Clancy. He was handled one on one by Tom Nalen and was completely a non factor the entire game. I can understand if you are constantly double teamed and don't make many plays. But if you are going one on one you need to beat your guy at least a few times. Clancy didn't beat Nalen once that game.

Hart to hate on a player who's playing against the dirtiest offensive line in the NFL. It's not like he's Bert or Chike, where he only has to look out for his inside knee. He could be attacked from any angle.

Don't forget also that Nalen's a 13-year veteran with 5 Pro Bowls in his pocket. No one on defense played well against the Broncos. That game was when I was convinced that there should be no way that Clancy Pendergast keeps his job.

One thing that wasn't mentioned in that article that I have heard is that the Cards would still like to sign a couple of veterans at other positions like linebacker. If they feel they have an excess at offensive line they could cut one and sign a linebacker. We have to remember that with the numbers of players some of these guys weren't going to make it anyway no matter what the cap situation.

After Levi Brown we still have more veteran offensive lineman than will make this team and that doesn't count one of the veteran guys like Mitchell if he impresses or if one of the rookie free agents happens to look like a keeper. The fact is at least one or two of those veteran offensive lineman are gone.

I am thinking Berry or Okeafor is going to be cut. They have low production and high salaries. Cutting one of them would give them enough cap space to sign the rookie class and sign a couple of veterans. I also agree Milford Brown is on the hot seat as well. The coaching staff and Brown havn't seen eye to eye. Maybe Whisenhunt doesn't want the distraction in the lockerroom and cut Brown.

Backups such as G Milford Brown, NT Kendrick Clancy and Ross could be in danger.

What part of "could be" do some people not understand?
Taken literally, you're right. But the fact that Kent made it a point to write an entire article about it kind of adds weight to the phrase: "could be."

The Incredible Shrinking Cap Budget

Cheesy - You've been around long enough not to be fooled into buying into to off-season hype about "the Cards being cap rich."

When you start to subtract such things as (a) the rookie pool, (b) extending contracts of veteran players, (c) re-signing unrestricted free agents you want to keep and (d) paying off performance incentives etc., suddenly there isn't so much cap room anymore.

At the beginning of each off-season, we hear the same old, same old about being "cap rich" from the local and national media; and no one (i.e. not the media & not the Cardinals) ever refutes this. They just let the misinformation stand and then - toward the end of the signing period - we're told "Surprise! We're out of money"

Happens every year.

Huh? Wasn't that long ago we were extending people midseason to use up caproom.

This is the first year I can recall where we INTENTIONALLY signed contracts to frontload cap hit onto this year, and then months later may have to cut or restructure guys to get everyone signed.

It's quite possible we'll do it correctly and it will be a non issue, but it's sure weird to me at the moment.

It is weird, but right now I would take it over the 10-15 teams that are sitting on 10M+ of cap space and basicly no new free agents signed.

Whoa. This is the biggest bunch of hogwash to be posted on this board in a long, long time. A long time.

The last two seasons we went into the regular season with $10 million plus in cap room. We had some $25 million in cap room heading into the offseason before Rod decided that he didn't like the dollars that were being thrown around, and so he moved bonuses into this season. Then we gave out roster bonuses instead of signing bonuses.

This was a surprise to no one in the front office. Look back at the thread from the beginning of free agency to now and you'll see where all the cap dollars went. They didn't go to Marcel Shipp's extension.

Berry had 6 sacks in 10 games, so one could imagine a 10 sack season. Okeafor had 8.5, tied for highest total dating back to 2004 in Seattle.

There's a premium in the NFL for guys who can get to the QB, and neither of these two are easily replaced by anyone presently on the roster.

Can you give me a credible source for your assertion that "the coaching staff and Brown havn't seen eye to eye"?.

P.S. Dwight Freeney had 5.5 sacks in 16 games last season.

Berry, I believe got his sack in 3 games. I saw Berry get shut down by the Rams back-up left tackle. Okeafor didn't start getting his number until the second half the season. Where was he the first half of the season. There were a couple of article on how Whisenhunt wasn't pleased with Brown non participation at the beginning of the offseason.

Playing the other side of the line where he is more concerned about containing the run.

Okeafor blew up once he was moved around more and rushed off the edge as an OLB. He is going to be a very good OLB in the 3-4 IMO.

Cutting both Okeafor and Berry would be just a giant blunder. You have no one behind them who could step in and equal their production.

I think your mistaking, vinny. Whiz said that he understood Browns abscence because he was getting married.

Cutting either of them would be a tremendous error, cutting both of them would effectively end the Cards' season. The best hope is that the team works out extensions/restructures with them to push some money into later years (not sure how possible this is with Berry, though). At 3-4 OLB we have bascially Calvin Pace behind these two, and then no-one. Daryl Blackstock, who hasn't done anything as an NFL player.

:barf: Hell no. I am for Warner restructuring, but releasing him would mean the season would end if Leinart goes down. He is an outstanding backup. And Aaron Brooks is worse than Eric Crouch. That would be a terrible move.

I think the issue was with Brown taking off time at mini camp to get married .. very curious timing to me ... there is plenty of other times to tie the knot ... very bad move on Browns part ...

Dude, do you have any idea how long it takes to plan a wedding? Teams get an extra minicamp when they change coaches. If Brown even started planning his wedding 9 months in advance, he couldn't have predicted that the Cards would fire Denny Green and then the pre-draft minicamp would be held the same week as his wedding.

Yep ...

I would change my wedding plans to work around my job .. and if I am correct M. Browns job is playing for the Cardinals ...

By the way I got married on short notice and have never regreted it ...
