It seems likely that all 8 female finalists in the Olympic games in the 100 metres will run under 11 seconds. Who is faster in a srtraight line, these 8 or the fastest 8 in the Nfl?

Given that whatever numbers the NFLers have date back to College or prior, I would bet on the 8 women in a head-to-head straight line race.

I'm going with the NFL. Those women are crazy fast but I don't think they'd stand much of a chance against the 8 fastest NFL players. It's tough to compare because you rarely here an NFL players 100 meter time (because, well, I don't think they ever time that) but I did find this...

"Jacoby Ford, who ran a 4.28 s in the 2010 NFL Combine, had a collegiate best of 10.01 s in the 100 meters.[1] Justin Gatlin, who ran 9.85 s for a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic 100 metres, before being banned from the sport for abuse of performance drugs, has a verified 40-yard dash best of 4.42 s.[2] This reflects the discrepancy in a runner's calculated time when using different timing methods."

I'd take the females in the Olympics to win that race against the NFL fastest. Only because it's a discipline they've learned and their muscles have learned (muscle memory) over and over and over again and I think they can get the most out of their abilities in that distance. A football player doesn't race distances like that. He's playing football, and different players play at different speeds in games (some even run faster in games than when they're timed because the adrenaline is flowing in a game, as opposed to being timed and chillaxing while waiting). Football players also shift weight and momentum and speed during games (setting up blocks) so I don't think their bodies are built for that type of race. I'll take the chicks in that race. I should add, it's one thing to post one fast 40 time that's clocked, another to do it over and over and over again like these Olympians.

How long does it take someone to reach top speed? I guess you could use someones 40 time and times it by 2.5. So PP 40 is 4.34 times 2.5 = 10.85. Probably not the best way to measure but there really is no other way. But I would bet my house that the top 8 fastest nfl players are faster than the female sprinters, for one they're men.

Being male has physical advantages, but they're (the female Olympians) trained for that distance, their muscles are trained for it. Football players play football, they're not running races. I bet 7 out of 10 races the ladies win.

Plus, an Olympian has such better form in a race. Miles apart from a football player.

Well, I will go the opposite. 100 metres is what they do, what they train for everyday. Frankly, I think they'd embarass most of the so called fastest in the MFL.

Max speed between 40 and 60 metres and then controlled deceleration. He/she who decelerates least wins.

If you give me top 8 I'm going to say NFL players.

Many players in the league are former high school and college track stars as well, and some are gold medalists in the Olympics. Back in the day, James Jett won in the 4x100 relays in Barcelona. Bob Hayes ran a 10.06 100m back in 1964. And players are not getting slower. Trindon Holliday, who currently plays for the Texans, ran a 10.07 100m dash time at the 2007 T&F championship. DRC was also a track star in college. The list goes on.

Since track is a Spring sport and football is played in the Fall, athletes use track to increase endurance, enhance speed, and build confidence for the following football season.

I think you could easily find 8 guys in the NFL with a 100m track background ..... May not be name guys, but they can fly

The Seahawks had a guy in camp who posted times in college that best what Jeter has been running ....... there are some serious athletes in the NFL and the 100m is all burst which fits the NFL as well

Don't forget that the fastest women today in the 100 meter would win the men's 1920's and earlier Olympics. I think it's the 1928 Men's numbers beats the 2008 women's.

Quite a few women were under 11 seconds and not even trying today in London.

I'd take the men in 40 yards, but I'd think they'd be hard pressed as a group to win in 100 meters. It probably would be mixed with some men beating women while some women beating men. But yeah I agree there are probably some guys you don't hear of that are faster than we think, so it's definitely possible for the men to win with all eight.

Overall players are getting faster, but not the top end guys really. They are tending to be bigger...getting up to that higher level that smaller guys would be. So a 250 guy runs like a 220, a 320 runs like a 275....stuff like that.

But we also have to remember that Olympic runners aren't in the NFL right now. None that I know of. This year's 100 meter NCAA final men was a 10.27 so even if a guy was great in college, the top women wouldn't be far behind.

I think it would be interesting to watch. Maybe they could sandwich that in with the 'Quarterback challenge' they use to do.

I just remembered...the Cardinals brought in Stanley Arukwe, WR from Troy as an undrafted free agent. Here are last years numbers for him in his 100 meter competitions...

100 Meters
3 10.45a .8 V F Apr 2 Tiger Track Classic
7 10.58a 2.0 V P Apr 16 War Eagle Invitational
7 10.78a 1.2 V F Apr 16 War Eagle Invitational
4 10.57a -1.2 V P May 15 Sun Belt Outdoor Champ...
3 10.58a -.1 V F May 15 Sun Belt Outdoor Champ...
7 10.54a E S May 28 NCAA Division I - East...
3 10.45a 1.4 E P May 28 NCAA Division I - East...

As you can see, he's fast but he's not the only track star trying to make it in the NFL. How many other teams have guys like this socked away on their roster, hoping he can develop hands? We'll see if Arukwe makes it in the NFL, but there's at least one guy who would routinely run about half a second faster than the top women Olympians.

As said before, Jacoby Ford ran between 10.01 and 10.23...and here's something interesting on Chris Johnson that I didn't know...

Chris Johnson is not just blisteringly fast, he's football fast. His 4.24-second 40 is the fastest official time in NFL history. And, just so you get an idea of how exactly how fast that is, Johnson would've been ahead of Usain Bolt at the 40-yard mark when Bolt set the World Record in the 100-meter race at the 2008 Olympics.

Those girls are fast but come on...I MEAN COME ON people. There is more money and fame in the lifestyle these guys chase to be made playing football and the best, fastest, male athletes would rather play football than run track for the most part with the exception of guys like Bolt from another country. I would take the fastest men playing in the NFL any day. It is what it is... BUT I would ABSOLUTELY take those girls over the fastest 10 baseball players any day as well :)

Oooh, a couple of big ones.

Adrian Peterson ran a 10.33 in High School and Jamaal Charles ran a crazy 10.18 in college (of course, that was before he blew out his knee).

The top NFL players would torch the women. No disrespect to the ladies, but the genetic factors are just too much to overcome. A big chunk of speed guys in the NFL did track in high school (and some in college) and as others have noted, their times as 18 year olds would shattered world-records for female Olympians.

Just as a point of reference. All the Woman's World records are slower than the State High School Boys records in Texas.

Examples boys first:

100m 10.13 v 10.49
800m 1:48.2 v 1:53.2
4x400 3:08.55 v 3:15.17

The 400m hurdles record for women, 52.34, is only 1.5 seconds faster than this slow old boy ran in college so long ago it was 440 yard Hurdles.

The question was fairly simple and straightforward. Are there 8 guys in the NFL today who can beat the 8 women finalists in this year's Olympics. It's not about male/female but simply running 100 metres in a straight line. We know that all of the women will run under 11 seconds... the NFLers???

Well i guess that if players like Holiday and Drc have run it just above 10 sec, they should be able, with training, to repeat that again, why would they not? In that case they would win. There are many others that could run as fast, example being Chris Johnson.

Even more interesting is how fast would the men run with pads on? With routes to perform? I dont think they would be the fastest on planet in this case.

The answer is fairly simple and straightforward. Yes, and easily.

Bolt is a bad man, he is like 6'5" and puts them up and down quick like LSH, those women are so small next to the annoucer it is amazing. I would like to know how many steps each take in the 100 meters compared to Bolt?

When I see Larry Fitzgerald take a Segway in camp, I still question his endurance and stamina, I mean Im use to it by now, but Jim Brown on one in his prime would - bzzzzt short circuit my NFL hardwires, like fans from Arizona wearing another teams gear and cheering for another team against the Cards, for that one team only. and being Cards fans the rest of the time...

Makes my butt pucker.

Yes, absolutely, they would destroy them. An upper tier HIGH SCHOOL track athlete beats the fastest current female Olympians. And those kids would get burned by the fastest guys in the NFL. Men dont reach their physical peak until their 20s, so if the NFL guys were faster at 18 then they'd be faster still during their prime.

And when you look at NFL 40 yard dash times you need to remember those are being ran on turf/grass and with cleats on... and the fastest guys are still ridiculously fast.

The fastest time in the final qualifier for the Women was 10.83. Only 6 were under 11.0.

Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Charles just to name 3 all ran faster in High School. It would be simple to find 8 guys in the NFL who could run faster than those women. You could probably find 80.

There is an odd thing about women's track records. Most of them were set 10-15 years ago in the 90's. The 100m record is 24 years old.

The testing wasnt as good back then... and I think pumping a woman full of testosterone has an even larger effect than it does on the dudes.

Apologies to the fastest ladies of the 80s and 90s, I am not giving you a fair trial, but those records sure seem shady.

So the fastest guys on earth choose to play in the NFL. Just like that? Wake up one day "Im bored...maybe ill play for the Falcons". Because nothing but speed matters in football.

Tyson Gay must have been born in Peru or something, otherwise hed be in training camp right now, huh?

And we all know that people born in other countries arent allowed to come to the US, go to college, and join professional sports leagues. Itd be madness.

The top NFL players would torch the women. No disrespect to the ladies, but the genetic factors are just too much to overcome.

Have you seen the top women runners? What genetic factor? Some of these chicks could stomp Ryan Williams to death. All men, and all women, arent created equal. Some of these girls are built like PP.

and besides, your taking the fastest guys in the NFL. What is that? A pool of like 1600? Against the fastest women ON EARTH. A pool of several billion. Odds are the Earth is going to produce a few freakishly fast women.

Finally, the biggest point that has yet to be raised in this thread: Races are won and lost at the starting line. These women are professional sprinters. Maybe in a mile race, the guys would overtake them in the long run, but in any 100m, or whatever race, the girls would be down the backend before the guys were even off the blocks. The start is the single biggest skill involved in running and the girls have years of training.

Athletically, men and women are not created equal. It takes nothing away from those women in the Olympics, they are phenomenal athletes and faster than just about any man who is NOT also a great athlete... but there are a ton of great athletes in the NFL. As others have pointed out, there are guys in the NFL right now who have run the exact same event faster than any women on earth has EVER ran it... and these guys did it as teenagers.
