Why Anquan Boldin will NOT be traded.

Take a step back. Take a deep breath. Put personal feelings aside and just look at what the Cardinals are doing.

Here is the question:

Why would the Cardinals trade Anquan Boldin when every move they have made this offseason is to win NOW with the passing game that brought them to the Superbowl last year ?

There has been no moves to improve the running game, there have been no drastic moves to improve the defense. The biggest moves his offseason have revolved around the passing game, and I don't see where trading the second most important player in the passing game is going to help this club win right now.

Even the last free agent signing, Jason Wright, was made in order to help the passing game. The guy is a good reciever, and good pass blocking running back.

Maybe if the Cardinals spent money on a grinder RB, and brought in some mammoth run blocking center and guard I could see the logic in trading Boldin. But that has not happened, and the time where the Cardinals would do this has passed.

Rod Graves, and Whiz have done nothing but say that Boldin is not going anywhere. Kurt Warner has stated that he wants Boldin back, Fitzgerald has stated he wants Boldin back, and the team embraces the guy (like it or not, but it is fact) as thier leader.

As for extending Boldin's contract ? It might happen it might not. The Cardinals obviously can care less if Boldin throws another trantrum, and to be honest the complaints have become old news. We all know Boldin is unhappy with his contract, we get it. The shock value of the situation is gone.

What does this all amount too? Boldin is here for two more years whether he likes it or not. The way the Cardinals are building this squad for next year, points to him playing for the Cardinals regardless of the situation.

A trade is not going to happen. It makes no sense, and everything the Cardinals have done so far this offseason supports that fact. The national media has no idea what it is talking about when it comes to Cardinal football. It has never in the past, and I don't see it switching over anytime soon. Until I hear about it from the Arizona community, all that should be considered are the organizations statements on the issue, and their actions this offseason.

As for Boldin's dimished skills ? Hogwash. Just look at the numbers from last year, and what he did in 10 games. I find it to be a joke that anyone would question Boldin's abilities. The guy is a stud, and he will be a huge part of the plans next season.

I am not saying you have to like the guy, or that his actions off the field should be forgiven. I may care less about it, but I can see where some fans no longer "like" him. But what he does on the field speaks for itself, and it will help this team in the up coming year.

I wish we could trade Bolding for a steal like a 1st and a 2nd from philly.

I said in 2007 that he would never play 16 games again. His career is coming to a close very soon. after two years he will be a shadow of his old self and I think Q knows this thats why he wants his payday.

RugyMuffin, I agree with everything you said. My only concern is that everytime I think I have something figured out, the exact opposite happens. I feel that if the right deal for Boldin came about, the Cards would take it, if not they will be happy to just let the situation ride out. I still think that if something is going to happen (trade) with Boldin it will be before the draft.

If the Cardinals perceive Boldin as going into the season with a bad attitude, which could effect the team, he will be gone. His words up to this point have indicated he will not be happy at all and wants out of Arizona. That to me indicates he will be an attitude case unless they give him Fitz type money. That is not going to happen. He will be gone.

The Cardinals are actually in a really good position when it comes to Boldin. Of course it's not good as an organization to have one of your leaders unhappy, but I don't think it will ever get to the point where the guy is lazy and creates a lot of animosity in the locker room. His relationships with his teammates are already established and I don't see those deteriorating over the contract issues. If money is the main objective for Boldin he can't quit playing hard or else he will be losing a lot of it in the coming years.

So when all is said and done the Cards enjoy one of three scenarios:

A) They have a pro bowl receiver for a very reasonable price.

B) They get at or above "market value" for Boldin in terms of Draft picks.

C) They get a player (and draft pick(s)) who they feel will make a bigger impact on the team.

Of these three options I am assuming "A" happens.

You made some good points, and it wouldn't surprise me if he stays.

However, I do not agree on the team leader piece - at all. Warrior, yes. Leader, no. Before last season, Kurt and Reggie Wells were chosen as captain, after Q had been chosen the previous year. Q was ditched for Reggie Wells (not trying to take a shot a Reggie, cause I like him). That tells you all you need to know about whether he is the leader. He is not. And the self-centered NFC Championship crap is NOT going to move him up the ladder, in fact he is clearly behind Fitz as well when it comes to leadership - and that is just on the offensive side.

And his contract will NOT be extended, period. Right now, it is a cheap 2-year deal, set to expire when Kurt's does. When that happens, good bye slinging the ball all over the place, and hello traditional offense with Fitz, and Breaston as #2.

I still say for the right price he is gone - a first plus. If we can pick up a first, and get two of three of Moreno, Mack or a pass rusher, we do it.

If nothing happens w/ Boldin before or during the draft, a lot may depend on what high profile receivers go down w/ injuries in the pre-season. There may be some teams like Dallas that will panic & give us the farm for Boldin. The draft & pre-season will be a lot more interesting this year for the Cards than in years past.

I'll be surprised if Anquan is traded THIS offseason. For one thing, Kurt Warner has been very vocal about Q being part of the offense.

Darren Urban voiced pretty much the same sentiments a couple weeks ago. Basically he said if Kurt had retired or ended up in SF, the Cardinals might have moved Anquan, but now it's much less likely.

In the unlikely event someone blows them away with multiple draft choices they might bite, but I just don't see that happening. Regarding Philly, has Donavan McNabb offered to cough up 2-million in salary if the Eagles acquire Q?

But, I think whats best for the Redbirds and their future is draft a day deal (a top 20 pick + at least a 3rd) that adds to the teams biggest weaknesses: RB and a pass rusher. The team has already proved it could win w/o Quan and the reason we lost the Super Bowl because the defense couldn't get a stop defensively. How many sacks did we miss on that last drive? Adding a big-time sack artist is at the top of the priority list and that means OLB with the age and current roster we have. In my opinion Larry English would look good in Cardinal red and in time would make us forget about #81. Regardless of what happens this year to Q, I highly doubt he ever gets an extension in AZ
