Maryland is the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament West Regional, and the Terrapins take on the top-seeded Florida Gators on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
But you may hear a different, unfamiliar description of Maryland basketball. Meet the "Crab Five."
Maryland (27-8) is more dependent on its starting lineup than any team in the nation. The nickname mashes up the Fab Five — made famous in the early 1990s at Michigan — and crabs, which are synonymous with Maryland's Chesapeake Bay.
This group accounts for 86% of Maryland's scoring. The most-used reserve is DeShawn Harris-Smith (15.2 minutes, 2.5 points, 2.4 rebounds). Tafara Gapare (3.5 points, 43.1% 3-pointers) and Jay Young (1.9 points, 37.5% 3-pointers) get about 10 minutes each.
Queen, a freshman, hit a bank shot at the buzzer in the second round to cap a 72-71 win over Colorado State.
Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson — all in Michigan's 1992 recruiting class — led the Wolverines to two consecutive national championship games. Michigan lost to Duke in 1993 and North Carolina in '94.
Those Wolverines were also sports fashion pioneers, making baggier uniforms — particularly shorts — and black socks must-haves for kids nationwide.
Rose, Webber, Howard and King all played in the NBA from that group. Another Michigan player from those two seasons, Eric Riley, also played in the NBA. Jackson did not.
Don't take the nickname literally. Crabs typically have 10 legs. Five pair, if that helps.
